Ordering If something goes wrong with Buyee?

Dec 27, 2022

    1. I'm hoping this will turn out to be premature and unnecessary, but I thought I'd ask just in case.

So I use Buyee to shop on Mercari Japan, specifically this one Mercari doll store I have bought several dolls from already. On December 14 I used Buyee to buy two heads from this seller. One of those heads was in the seller's direct possession, as in in the same location they are, the other one was in a storage facility "overseas" (the doll is legit, I checked, no worries there). Those who use Buyee know that the cost for the items you order gets withdrawn from your paypal as a deposit before the item is officially bought, it also did in this case, for both heads.

The first head was reported as successfully bought the same day. On December 17 I received a mail from Buyee asking me to please confirm to them and the seller that I still wanted the head knowing it will take a couple weeks to get it shipped to Japan. I confirmed, Buyee confirmed my confirmation. Then silence. The doll head was in transit and Christmas was happening, so I didn't think much of not having an "item successfully bought" message yet.

Color my surprise when I checked the Mercari store just now and see that same head relisted, not just the same (rare) sculpt, but with the exact same faceup and the exact same chips in said faceup, aka the head that's supposed to be mine. Judging by the description, it is now in the same location as the seller. I did not get any messages that the transaction was cancelled, nor any refunds. So I sent Buyee a message asking what is going on just now, I hope they'll be able to fix it and either still get the head for me or at least give me my money back so I can try again (I do really want this head, it's quite unique and also a pair with the other one and it messes up my plans if I only get one).

Has anyone else had a situation like this with Buyee and how did they deal with it?

    2. How strange! I've never had anything like that happen to me with Buyee before, but I've also not used it to make any doll purchases yet. I have had good experiences with their customer service, though, so fingers crossed they'll be able to get you a satisfactory conclusion. I wish you the best of luck getting everything sorted out.

    3. @Youzen thank you for your input^^.

Well, they got back to me, apparently my order was cancelled because "seller ran out of stock after the order was placed", which the seller does warn about, but the seller did ask me to confirm the order and that head is still sitting there, for a lower price and with no sign that it's a reservation for someone. I already received a refund from Buyee, they handled it pretty good. I'm going to try and get the head that's listed, see what happens.

    4. I hope you get the head! I know with USA mercari, that if the seller doesn't provide proof of shipment within 3 days, the order gets cancelled. So if it took them more than 3 days to get their hands on the head, mercari might have auto cancelled the order.

    5. @ShuriTigerH Yay, I'm glad you got your refund and an explanation! (Even if it's a slightly confusing one.) Good luck on getting that second head for real this time.

    6. @jessholy Thanks, that's interesting to know. it might well have been that, or my personal theory: I know there was another person interested (messages between seller and prospective buyer are visible on Mercari Japan), they asked the seller more pics since the pics provided were not great, more pics were uploaded, then I came in and ordered, I assume the other person got first dibs so seller cancelled my order, other buyer backed out when clearer pics came that showed damage in the blushing, seller couldn't just pass the head on to the next interested person in line due to Mercari's system(?) so relisted with a decent pic and a slightly lower price because of the now clearly visible flaw.

      @Youzen Thanks!

I did get up getting the head on the second try no problem. Hopefully it will arrive at my proxy's warehouse soon so I can have both heads shipped home^^.

    7. @ShuriTigerH Oh I did not know that you could see other people's messages on Mercari Japan. I am glad that it worked out in your favor though!

    8. I bought a few things from Mercari and one seller still hasn't shipped a wig to the Buyee warehouse. This is annoying as it missed the boat for my airmail packaging up everything else. I've since bought another item so I'll start making up another shipment, but who knows if this wig will ever be dispatched.

Do Mercari sellers have a set number of days to send an item? Or is it possible they don't want to ship to Buyee's warehouse or something? I lived in China for a while and it was clear a few Taobao sellers wouldn't ship to foreigners.

    9. @Xiongmao I don't know about Mercari Japan, but Mercari USA - the seller has to ship the item within 3 days of payment. If they don't, you get a refund and they might get dinged/penalized.

    10. I've been using Buyee for a couple of years now and in a case like this I double check and do the following:

      1) On the mercari sales page there is a button: More about items. Sometimes the seller explains there that you're buying a pre-order/made to order/imported item (often not made in Japan but China) and that it'll ship once they have it in their possession. This can take 1 week or several months which could explain the delay.

      2) Check the mercari sales pages' item explanation. Here you will find the estimated shipping date. As far as I know the max is 4-7 days. Sometimes it takes a little bit longer but after 10-14 days it is likely that something isn't going as planned and then I always contact Buyee to explain the situation and ask if they can check with the seller for me.

      3) Press the View on Mercari button below the item explanation. This will lead you to the original page on mercari.
      Things to watch out for:
      - The sales page has no "sold" notification. This could indicate that Buyee couldn't get the item or the seller is selling to several people at once.
! Sold on Buyee's page is not the same as sold on mercari. Once you buy it through Buyee they still need to buy it on mercari.
      - Below information of products, you'll find the seller. Usually with a profile pic. Click on this to see if the seller has additional info on how they handle sales. Sometimes they state delays there or that they sell pre-order items/stuff from China. You can also check how many stars and good vs bad reviews they gathered here.
      - Below information of products and the seller's info there is a comment section. I've seen comments in the past that indicated that what I wanted to buy went to someone else (comments between the seller and another buyer) or you can see Buyee introducing themselves as a proxy but being ghosted by the seller. It happens sadly. :( Sometimes when the seller is in contact with Buyee it turns out they won't deal with proxy services or don't want their items to be shipped overseas.

This is everything I could think of. Sorry for the long post but I hope it's helpful in some way and wishing you good luck to resolve the situation! :)

    11. Thanks @Lamento . The seller has now shipped the wig to the warehouse. I'm now waiting on Yor Forger. I hope they haven't sold her to somebody else... I just have to be patient.

My other items arrived from Buyee today. There was a big hole punched in the side of the box but nothing fell out luckily. I didn't opt for extra packaging.

    12. @Xiongmao That's great to hear! :) I'm crossing my fingers everything goes as planned with Yor Forger!

I've used the extra packaging service before in the past but I don't think it's really worth paying extra for when it comes to dolls and related items. Most sellers already pack items really well and Buyee puts those packaged items together in a box with some air filled cushions.
When I used the extra packaging service the difference was bubblewrap envelopes for photocards/flyers I bought instead of the usual green paper envelopes and they filled the extra space in the box with some kind of polyurethane foam instead of the air cushions (not inside the doll box). Might be good for expensive fragile china or glass though.

The post can be quite rough with packages. :sigh Sometimes my mail looks like they'd rather eat it than deliver it.
