Hi guys if you are sculpting using sculpey original white do not use Rust-Oleum 2X ultra cover flat gray sandable primer. 1. It does not cure right on the sculpey and stays very sticky 2. It after being on the sculpey and not curing it literally makes the sculpey go soft 3. Even on my parts I cast in resin it is very shiny not flat Just letting you all know my results had I sprayed a part such as my head which took months to do I would have been devastated trying to save someone else some heartache
This is very helpful! I want to share this website by a lady who works with polymer clay and who I've been following for years. This article basically outlines what to and what to not put on polymer clay and though it doesn't deal with primers, it gives you a pretty good idea of what will destroy your clay and what won't: Spray Sealers for Polymer Clay Can be Sticky ...hope this helps
Thanks bunches it will help a lot...I used an automotive primer once that worked ok it took a little longer to dry but it did dry not destroy the clay..I thought sharing my mishap might help save someone else the same mistake..thanks again
Basically anything with solvents will not work on polymer clay and remain sticky. Anything water or alcohol based is usually mot a problem
I wish I could remember the name of the auto primer I used before it worked well..I kind of learned the hard way not everything works
Rust-Oleum 2X ultra cover flat gray sandable primer is an oil based primer so the oil will not cure with the polymer clay. It's often an easy thing to overlook so check the cans of primer, it should say what it's made of. An epoxy based primer should work fine with clay. I would also be weary of any lacquer based primers, and I feel like enamel would chip easily, but I'm not certain on clay. Honestly now that i think about it, it may be the aerosol component causing the clay and primer not to cure. Perhaps a brush on type would work?
