Agree with you , i know we're buying art but i can't help but think smaller size dolls should be cheaper cause they used less resin :P lol , just my opinion though Respect to artist
I personally own 5 American girls and a ton of barbie like dolls in addition to getting my first BJD soon. So I think I'd have a wild population. When my kids are older I plan to do wild holiday displays with ALL my dolls. BJD ones away from windows and tiny hands.
If BJDs were cheaper, I'd have way more fantasy dolls. I mostly buy humans because I don't play and photoshoot fantasy dolls as much for some reason. Like I've tried, but I don't even know why that is. It's why I also collect Monster High Dolls. I just love all these fantasy concepts and it's easier on the wallet and I don't go "I spent $500 and I'm not even gonna use it for anything"
I'd say that I would have tons of dolls if they were cheaper. However, it's true that knowing that you can't have them right away make you want them even more. In my opinion, It's not just the money, but the hard work, what make people consider things more valuable. For example, in a poor country/community, an expensive dress is like a dream, but for people who can afford many of those dresses, they probably get tired of them or don't appreciate the value of the same item the same way. What I mean is, the value is not only about the materials dolls are made, but about the hard work and the waiting. There would be more people buying dolls, for sure, but I don't think the level of interest would be the same. If they were cheaper, I believe companies would have other strategies to keep people interested, like making almost every doll limited, or opening pre-order dates just a few days/year, or something like that. That would be done to maintain the "I can't have a doll whenever I want" feeling on people. That would be a very clever way to keep costumers interested and watchful. What do you think? Does it make any sense? lol
I feel the quality would be lost. If they were as cheap as barbies, I would assume the quality would be like that. I guess I also like having the idea I'm helping support artists too?
You get what you pay for, and there is a range of quality of that in bjd now. They would be made of cheaper materials with little or no variation of size, sculpt or features, the very thing that makes them desirable. For many if not most of us, the price alone creates a discerning development of taste, as we must pick and choose. There is the pleasure of the search, the anticipation when waiting, the box opening. Otherwise, just a clutter of beanie babies.
There are people who still have 50+ bjd and people who don't buy more than decided quality because of the place and lack of attention they can give to it. I think there are still many people who wouldn't have too many of them if they were more affordable. As for me, i'm sure i wouldn't have really much because there are not many molds i really love and want to have. btw i think i would buy some girls if the cost would be affordable) i like some of them, just not that much as to pay the price i'm ready to pay for a boy
If they were cheaper (provided they were still in good quality) I would definitely not second-guess buying some. Right now—of course, I am super poor!—it will be a while before I can get even just one
I feel like it's the rarity and the fact that I have to wait that makes them more interesting and desirable to me. I never collected dolls growing up and only have a handful of anime/game figurines and stuff that are of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE characters. So quite frankly, if the dolls were drastically cheaper (say, less than $100 each) I probably wouldn't be interested at all. Plus, I'd worry about the quality at that price. The dolls are expensive not only because of the materials used, but because of the artistry that goes into each one—the design, the crafting, the makeup and clothes... Each person involved in that process deserves to be paid fairly and I just don't see how that can be done if the dolls are much cheaper than they are now.
this is a rather complicated question for me personally. I must agree with many of the earlier statements that the price of the doll is part of what makes its special. Because of the amount of time and effort that you have to put into getting the money for the doll. Thusly the doll becomes a representation of that time and effort. However for someone like me theres also a flip side. Where in I sometimes feel guilty about how much i have spent on my dolls. Because i know all the other things i could have purchased such as things to help around the house and what not. Theres also the thought that I could have been saving that money for when i really needed it. So if they cost less i wouldn't have that guilt. (Granted i feel that way any time i spend a large sum of money) I dont think i would want them to be as cheep as something like a Barbie or what not but maybe having some more dolls in the $150 range (shipping included) would be nice ^^; as for how many i would have... if they were the price of say barbies or even monster high and were the same quality....i don't want to think about it to be honest >.> then again considering the fact that i spend at least a month or so on each doll when it comes in to do the face up body blush make their wig and their clothes as well as writing up their backstory and what not >.> I may not have as many as i think i would. Probably around 4 or five more then i do now.
I collect so many toys as it is, including lots of off topic dolls for customizing and general enjoyment and I've found I love my £15 Heath Burns or sylvanian families chocolate bunny as much as any of my BJDs. They get names, clothes, custom work, far too many pictures taken of them, and dragged along on adventures all over the place. I was definitely drawn to the expense and the exclusivity of BJDs when I first got into them but I doubt it would change my mind about starting to collect them if they were more affordable. I'd probably end up with far more than I have the room for if I base it off existing numbers of affordable toys.
Honestly I would love them just the same. I get attached to "toys" very easily, and I cherish them for years. For me, it would just make them easier to get, and more to love.
This is a double edged sword Question for me. While I would love that they would be cheaper, I rather enjoy the thrill of 'The Hunt'. Researching the doll you like, how much it is, what company it from, seeking out owner pics and asking endless questions. And then the looking and the waiting, the Joy of finding (or the angst of losing) said grail-doll and then purchasing, the waiting (again!) and then the homecoming...phew! it's quite the roller coaster for a Doll!. If all the major doll companies suddenly lowered their prices that thrill would be diminished. To me BJDs are not a 'Status' thing. It is more of an outlet for my creativity, and I enjoy buying genuine artist made BJDs to support said artists so that they can continue to create more beautiful Dolls.
I would have, like, a ton. But as said before, the quality wouldn't be as great, so pictures wouldn't be as great, etc. And the fact that they're so expensive makes them more limited. If they were cheaper, everyone would have dolls alike.
I'd probably get some of my favorite sculpts but I don't think I could or ever will have a huge collection. I think 10 will be my limit and I currently own 3.
Yes, I collected Jenny as well (similar price with Barbie). I love the dolls no matter how much it is. Just because I like the designing.
If they were exactly the same but just cheaper, I wouldn't be as hesitant to buy one every time. In all honesty I would want to buy more!
oh if they were the same quality id definitely still be buying them. having a cheaper price would just mean i could have my family together much faster! im also very picky with sculpts so i dont think i would go too overboard.... that being said, it would make impulse buying much easier...yikes
I would still love them! However I fear I might go overboard with the numbers....... yeah, in someways I'm glad they cost a lot! xD
I'm sure my family would have to stage a doll intervention for me, because the dolls would be covering every desk, shelf, counter, etc...
Honestly, even if the dolls were of exactly the same quality as they are now, I think I would be less interested in the hobby if they were cheaper. They're more precious to me because they're expensive, and I think that's a big part of what motivates me to devote time and effort into working on them. I can't imagine myself spending weeks on making a pattern and sewing a dress for a doll that I had just bought on a whim. All of the planning and saving is really enjoyable and rewarding, for me at least.
I collect monster high dolls, which are of course inexpensive, and I feel that if bjds were less expensive or the same price of monster highs I'd have like 20. The only fear I have is that I won't connect with them all if I have a lot.
Honestly, price is why I am able to limit myself. If they were cheaper, I'd be drowning in dolls of every size, color, and aesthetic!
Hmm, well I'd probably get dolls on my wishlist much faster, and I'd probably do a lot more impulse buying, but other than that I'd still love them. One of my favorite things about the hobby is customization, and the stories people make for their dolls, and I don't think those aspects would change very much if dolls were cheaper.
I agree, I would treat them the same way. But I think that maybe I'd be braver with mods. I think we would see more mods in general, because it's not that easy psychologically to start doing something irreversible to your immaculate expensive doll. And of course I'd have tons of them
Omg...if the price is more affordable, I would have an army of them...but yes, I do feel that maybe it will lose the exclusivity as we have now.
If ball jointed dolls were less expensive, I would be collecting a ton of them. There are so many beautiful sculpts out there, that it is almost impossible to get a fraction of the dolls I want.
Oh I'd definently would have more, then the chaos would endure as I'd have to try & keep who's clothes are who's... at least right now I have 3 sets of clothes one for my Ipelhouse HID, & EID Hero, Granado's Enoch & Dollshe's David at least can share most items!! Now to get Dollsoul Vito Haim & his new boyfriend Killian when he gets here some clothes!
I would probably buy just as many as I do now. I honestly am not sure if I would like them more or less being cheaper, it's hard to say. I love getting good deals on my dolls, and that's part of the fun for me in this hobby!
If dolls were less expensive, I'd still love them all the same, and I would probably go crazy on spending on dolls. I can't really go 'crazy' per se at the moment because of their price, buuuut thinking about this idea.... Yeah, I'd probably have a wild population of them in my room if that was the case, pft. I'd also be able to complete my doll plans in an instant. Currently, they're on hold haha.
... I'd be in so much trouble because I'd most likely own even more dolls and, seriously - I'm running out of space!
...the Head Box would maybe finally be empty because all the floating heads could get bodies? XD And I'd have more money to spend on yarn...
I kind of like having to save for a doll...it gives me something to look forward to and plan for and shows I really want it. If they were as cheap as barbies I'm not sure they would feel as special to me.
Hmmm, I think if they were sort of barbie price the doll itself would probably not be as attractive, because logically to be a cheaper to buy doll it would probably be a cheaper doll in the first place? I think if dolls were somewhere more mid range, juts a bit less expensive than they are I would be absolutely drowning in them!
I honestly think it might make it a little less fun. It's kind of exhilarating when you save up all of that money, and you spend it on your doll, and you know its an investment and not just something that anyone could go to Walmart and buy. I mean obviously there are a lot of people in the BJD community, so someone else is bound to have the same sculpt, but I think the fact that they're a little harder to get makes them more unique. I think its cooler this way too because even though other people might have the same sculpt I haven't really seen many that look alike, whereas Barbie's would all look the same. Just my opinion obviously, but I don't think I would love it as much if I could walk into a Toys-R-Us and SEE the other 500 people purchasing my exact doll.
yea~i still love them same as now i ask same question to myself before, and discuss with my friend if the price like barbie,we will buy a lot of them in every doll's company^^
I don't think I would have a ton, but I would definitely get more. However, I wouldn't want them to be Barbie-priced, I think that this hobby is nice because it takes commitment and I believe the community would be very different if that aspect was taken out. If they went up to a few hundred dollars instead of a couple thousand I think it would be better for the hobby.
I love BJDs because they fully articulated, easilly customizable, pretty to look at, lots of clothes, and flippin huge by doll standards. The price has nothing to do with it. If it was possible to get that level of quality for $30 I would be over the moon! But I still wouldn't have an army. at barbie price, I would have started collecting earlier and definitely would have had an army back then. But nowadays I just don't like having too many things. Takes up too much place!
I'd definitely have more, because I love them and other dolls for reasons outside of the price. I wouldn't have to limit my bjd collection to dolls that fit certain criteria and I'd be open to making more impulsive buys. If a doll appealed to me just cause it was cute, or to add some variety to my collection, then why not? I don't think I'd be at hoarder levels though. At least, I hope not! I'd also probably have a bunch of project/practice/experiment dolls. However, I do think it would change the way I viewed the dolls even if I don't want to admit it. If one of my Monster High dolls (or similar) was damaged, it wouldn't be too much of a problem to replace it. For my bjds, most everything has been sought out and put together for a reason. They have more sentimentality this way and I don't know if a replacement doll would feel the same as the original.
I actually don't know if I'd have more than I plan on having (which is 2 or possibly 3). I mean unique sculpts are amazing and all but my interest lies more in dressing and making clothes and such; I'd rather sink that money into clothes, fabric, wigs, eyes, supplies, and etc. The only difference I can tell is that if bjds were cheaper I'd likely buy one for my sister It's only in my nature to attempt to draw more into this hobby.
I think I'd drown in dolls if they were cheaper. ^^; Like even now I own 20+ and have plans for several more.
I don't think I'd have many more if they were cheaper, maybe just a couple of my favourites. With a doll comes lots of other expenses, face-up, clothing, wigs, eyes, so these things would soon mount up and they're not cheap. At the moment I've got one, and no plans to get any more until I'm completely comfortable and bonded with my one.
I think that if they were cheaper, I wouldn't be so afraid to attempt faceup and mod work myself. At the moment, even a practice head at twenty or thirty dollars is too much money for my paranoia. If I could get several practice heads for like five dollars a piece, I might actually have the courage to attempt the faceups and molding I've always wanted to try! I even have two practice heads right now, but I keep thinking "I could actually use these for dolls, but only if I don't ruin them forever."
While I don't own one yet, I feel very 50/50 on this idea. I am a broke college student, so them being cheap would be amazing and I'd have a fleet of them easily, but then the quality would never be the same, and the whole feeling of saving for something that's so expensive, really makes you stop and think how badly you want it, and can make the decision between an "it's cute" doll and a *gasp* "I must have it!" doll hehe
