Ideas for My first Sewing Projects?

Jul 12, 2009

    1. I just got a new sewing machine and I am a sewing noob so I was wondering if you had any ideas of easy things I could make for my first project.

I have an SD size doll and the doll is female.

I have no preferences for what right now I just want to find something that comes with a tutorial...

      Thanks so much!

    2. This is the easiest tutorial I've seen for an article of clothing

      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233318

It's easy to follow with lots of pictures and you don't need to be a sewing pro to be able to make it and make it well ^^ And this tutorial is for any sized doll!

Good luck with your first project!

    3. thanks so much! ^_^

    4. Pants are the easiest things to start with if you want to learn to sew finished hemmed clothing articles. You actually learn basics by making pants, and they are simple and have mostly straight lines. If you want quick articles of clothing without any fuss, you can make a lot of different types of clothes by just sewing tubes of stretchy knit material. You can make arm and leg warmers, hats, tube tops, dresses, skirts- all just tubes, essentially. Socks and stockings are tubes as well, just closed at one end. This will keep your doll decent while you learn to sew more complicated stuff.

    5. Wow, that is a great idea! I would have never thought of that! Thanks so much for your suggestion.

    6. Simple gathered skirts are a good place to start. You can cheat & use an elastic waistband but I highly recommend learning to make a proper waistband right from the start. It's so much neater.

Simple tube tops & halters are easy. Halters are basically two elongated triangles that you gather a bit on the bottom, sew to a band & tie around the doll's neck.

Get yourseld a few well made, basic patterns & things will go much easier as not only will you have the actual pattern pices in the right size but you'll have instructions to aid you as you go.

    7. I agree totally with Gwydion! Get a couple simple, basic patterns and start from there. Many people sew all their lives w/o ever NOT using a pattern.
Once you learn the basics and have made a dozen or so (I'm not kidding...) pieces of clothing, you should start to understand the basics of clothing construction. And look at your own clothing, how it's seamed, finished or cut. Then you can use your basic patterns for pants, shirts, jackets, skirts, dresses as "Slopers" (basic, fitted patterns) and change things like sleeves, length, necklines, etc. but that's a long way down the sewing learning curve. So don't ask for frustration. Invest in a couple good, basic patterns.
