Hi, Still not sure if I'm allowed to post. Wanted to put this into a thread by itsself instead of having to post it in a whole bunch of threads. When you have loads and loads of sanding(for shaping because sculpey went all lumpy) try a razorblade instead of sand paper. It's faster. It doesn't make a bunch of dust, and you can controll how much comes off with the size of your blade, regular old single-edge for large areas, and various x-acto blades for small precise shaving. Hold the blade stationary at an angle for shaving, and move the piece(just gives more control really). Oh, yeah, it doesn't remove the need for sanding, just reduces it, and it's faster than working with a dremel, and imho a little more precise when removing tons of lumps or shaping a piece(the dremel can get away from me, and I can wind up sanding off too much, but with the blade I have a lot more control). You still have to smooth with sand papers(yes sandpapers, varying grits), and/or a rotary tool(I only say dremel as catchall). Shouldn't come as a huge surprise that you can use a blade(heck it says right on the box that you can carve and sand cured clay), but I wonder how many people read carve and equate it with hard or difficult. Just curious, and hoping to be of help
I've done that before! The nice thing about using a razor is that, opposed to using your little 80-grit sanding attachment on the dremel, it doesn't leave those scratches and gouge marks that dremel does. I noticed that if you half-cure your sculpy part (not quite all-the-way hardened) , it is very easy to shape it with a blade. then when you get it to a good point, stick it back in the oven until its completely cured.
I have been using a Cera Kanna ceraminc knife on resin before, but the other day I realised you can use it on most hard surfaces, like cured putty instead of sanding. The good thing about the Cera Kanna is it isn't sharp so you can't cut your fingers etc like with a razorblade. Cera Kanna runs about $20 from Volks, but I'm sure you can get similar things from other places.
I use an exacto knife all the time...and then i use my rotary tool to sharpen the exacto blades...cause I am poor and it is economical XD
I tried an exacto and all that before but I keep going back to sandpaper. I just go to town with some coarser paper. That way my OH SO GRACEFUL self isn't prone to like. Gouging an eye out or amputating a finger >>;
