I can never own enough...

Apr 22, 2024

    1. Basically the counterpoint to the "Things I don't buy anymore" thread - what are things that are indispensable in this hobby for you?
What do you constantly think, "I really need to buy more [X]"?
What's something you almost always add to your cart when you're making an order?

I'll start: for me, it's three things, actually.
The first is shoes. I never seem to have enough shoes for my girls.
The second is wig caps. I was kinda surprised by the number of people who said they never buy wig caps anymore. I can't have enough of them. Just got a bunch in the mail, and I'm doing the wig-tug test: grab a small piece of a doll's hair and give it a gentle tug. If the wig flies right off, on goes a silicone wig cap. I love silicone wig caps.
The third is flexible silicone washers (aka silicone "kips" in the hobby). I put them under necks, between joints, and between parts when I ship a doll. They're great for creating friction and helping the dolls to hold poses. They don't "freeze" joints in place like hot glue sometimes does.

How about you? Maybe we can help some new collectors out.
Or maybe we'll all just confess our obsessive need to collect eyes.

I have more eyeballs than heads... and I think I always will

    3. Pants! >_<;
I have been in the hobby for years, and I find I never have enough pants for everyone. This doesn't matter if it's a year I buy no dolls or a year my resin army grows. There is a constant pants/shorts/skirts shortage as every influx of either dolls or bottoms has a cycle. Which normally has a stealing/barrowing from others phase and/or finding that anything not in use is in weird sizes so doesn't fit. (Or worse is in the drawer of these stains so can only be used for like seconds for photos and then taken right off after. Mostly random iffy stuff from full sets.)

Eyes, wigs, and shoes also feel always needed, even if not at the time. My brain just goes yeah sure everyone is good now, but what if I want to change someone's look or buy a new doll later?.

      Elastic strings for restringing needs.
Affordable doll chairs in both 1/3rd and 1/4th scales and/or stands for bigger dolls.
Weird one here hemostats/clamps, I have like 4 or so now and it's shocking to me how one just wasn't enough nor was two actually. I have a lot of different sized BJDs and sometimes with stringing you just need more then a couple of those for the weird/hard jobs.

    4. Eyes. Sometimes I wonder if I eat them while thinking to something else because I never have enough eyes. And fabrics! Japanese fabrics especially. I have a bunch of them, I could sew outfits for years without needing to buy more, but... I keep buying more nonetheless.

    5. Materials... Fabrics, fibers, beads and other knick-knacks I see a possibility for doll crafting in, I hoard recklessly. I think that's the dark side of being a hardcore DIY person, I own more materials than finished things (for my dolls and just in general) and I still feel like I don't have enough materials :sweat

      • x 6
    6. - Eyes putty
      - Face guard
      - New string... Once every year I think
      - Silicone kips... Along with the string
      - Magic sponge
      - Zipper bag for clothes

      These are unstoppable :XD:

I love eyes and wigs and clothing too but at some point you will find that it's enough for this brand of certain items. Like, no more than 10 Mako eyes, or I only need 3 Sets of dress from DollHeart, for example

That's why I won't consider wigs, shoes, and eyes in this category.

    7. Shoes! Never enough shoes! (I feel like I've said this in a couple of threads already but it's true - I am a shoeholic :sweat)

Small snaps and clasps (velcro hater here, all clothes must close with reasonable but easy closures). Extra points if I can find a good size in a store irl.

I make most clothes myself but I feel like it's worth noting that I never have enough socks or underwear somehow? So I keep making more almost every sewing session.

As an unoa owner I also never have enough faceplates :chibi

    8. Yeah the amount of eyeballs I now have in my room is probably concerning along with wigs and clothes. If I was unchecked I would buy a shit ton of a) bust stands and b) wig stands for styling wigs but alas

      • x 3
    9. If I'm thinking about the practical stuff: elastic strings. I only check and change if I must the strings of my dolls once a year but somehow I always seem to be lacking string of the right thickness. Maybe my lack of organization has something to do with this xD
But also... shoes! I love shoes. I would have all the 1/4 girl shoes. High heels, flats, boots... All of them I love <3

      • x 1
    10. Saaaaammmeee... I have materials for dolls that I don't own yet, for outfits that I don't have the skill to sew yet...

    11. Feeling personally attacked (are you me?)

      • x 2
    12. Count me in on the shoes and eyes corner of shame.

Eyes in particular seem to just multiply silently in the box when I'm not paying attention. I refuse to believe I have actually bought that many.

      • x 3
    13. Eyes are like dice. They give that same...clicky clacky smooth *niceness* feel?? Small and collectible and they come in so many pretty colors and I just...I can't get enough!!!

      • x 3
    14. Eyes and Wigs! I love having a nice stash of these. They come in handy every time I get a new doll and haven't decided on the look yet. Or when I want to try out a new look for a doll I already have. Or when a friend has a new doll and is looking for what is going to fit.
Socks! I'm a tights-and-socks lover IRL and some om my dolls follow in the same tracks. Many of my dolls tend to wear skirts, so the right socks are important.
Shoes is kind of the same, but to a lesser extent because they are so much more expensive to buy and harder to make.

I don't count sewing and crafting materials, because a lot of it is stuff I use for myself and for other hobbies as well.

    15. Fabric for doll clothes. Yarn for wigs. Props I might want to take pictures with one day.

I guess I'm with the material hoarders.

      • x 4
    16. I'm on the same train for eye and wig hoard lol I love having options even though I don't change things around much. I also for some reason keep buying SD girl clothes when I only have 3 SD girls and they're styles are already set and are much more elegant than what I keep buying :sweat

      • x 1
    17. Two fold answer:
      1. Things i keep buying even though from an outside perspective I have enough, but internally I'm not satisfied yet with the options I have so I won't stop buying until I've found what feels like the correct "fit" for everyone - eyes and wigs. I have many but not many that feel "right" or that each doll has "their" correct set or eyes or wig.

      2. Things i KNOW I have enough of, have way too much of actually, but keep buying anyway because it brings me joy- clothing and shoes for the tiny dolls. Specifically for my Jacoosun Rous. Could the Rou boys do with more clothing? Yes. Is it the boys I am primarily buying for? No. Do the SDs have to share like 4 shirts and 6 pairs of pants? Yep. Am I buying them clothes? nope. Could the minis use an influx - especially my roze heln and chae as only one of them has clothing on ? Absolutely. But here i am, constantly buying the tiny girls more cute clothes and shoes - because the level of detail in things that small is enchanting.

    18. I'm with you all on eyes and wigs! I also never seem to have enough clothing to cover all of my dolls. :huh?:

    19. long black msd wig. I have several. And yet here I am. Thinking to myself: "damn, maybe I need some more of those".
Other stuff too, like shoes and clothes and eyes, but it's ridiculous how many of the same exact wig I keep buying

      • x 2
    20. Oof, definitely eyes, shoes, wigcaps, wigs (ever growing wig collection), pants, silicone kips, string (I need to order more string - open to recommendations of where to order from, I kinda like trying string from different sellers each time I get more) <3

      • x 1
    21. Clothes, it’s not that I like each doll to have multiple outfits, it’s a community closet. It is just so fun to restyle the crew every now and then.

      • x 4
    22. Heads! I can’t seem to go a month without buying specifically a head of some sort! Bodies come in considerably slower than heads so, so I have a small shelf of heads that sits on top my bed and stares down at me when I sleep. I don’t even want to know how many more heads there are than bodies in my horde, but I have 3 bodies incoming to try to balance the scales.

outside of resin, I hoard eyes. I learned to make eyes because I go through so many of them. It has not cut down on the number of eyes that I buy, don’t think, but I plan to make more eyes this weekend for some of my new arrivals.

beyond resin and eyes, I also hoard pastels. I have two “beginner” sets of pastels and 24 hand-rolled artist pastels. I intend to add more hand-rolled pastels as I get the money to. I love the pigment in them, and I love the way it applies to faces. I keep buying more of the good pastels whenever I’m by the art store.

Also mica powders! I use a ton of them on my faceups, and every time I’m by the soap store my ex used to always get soap stuff at, I buy micas so that I can have new colours to play with in faceups!

    23. OK, this made me laugh, because I keep buying size 8-9 blonde wigs. I think I have four or five of them, and at least two are almost identical.
I literally had to put a post-it note on my monitor to remind me to stop buying blonde wigs.

      • x 5
    24. I tend to do the same, especially if it’s sparkly, but then I realize I don’t know how to put everything together without it coming out too tacky or just too much of everything thrown together. So then my project once again gets shoved to the side.

      • x 3
    25. Oh no. It's...a lot.

I just had to buy a new huge plastic tub today to hold all the spare wigs. I used to sell a wig when I sold the doll who wore it, but then I realized I was losing so much money, especially when I later wanted to rebuy the same styles, so now I keep every single wig as long as it's not awful quality or damaged....and sometimes I buy random wigs with no plans for them just because the price is right and it's pretty....And since Pepper likes to keep colorful hair and change it regularly in her story, that means she has like 20 wigs that are just hers....:aeyepop:

Also, Eyeco silicone eyes. I can never have too many spare eyes!

S-hooks and elastic. I tend to toss those into the cart any time I buy from dealers.

Clothes and accessories. Each doll has their own tub and I keep a spreadsheet to be sure everybody has met their minimum requirements. There is also a backup tub of things the current crew won't wear but I like it too much to let it go.

    26. My dolls can never have enough clothing. I am always working on Something.

      • x 4
    27. Definitely eyes. I've bought so many mystery bags of fantasy eyes that my dolls will never use, but they're so prettyyyy :...(
And then I buy my doll their actual character eyes as well lolol so it never endssss

      • x 3
    28. Every time I use some Mr. Super Clear I think to myself, I should buy another can. Literally unwrapped a can yesterday, used it once and thought hmmm should I order another? :XD:

      • x 7
    29. YES oh my goodness that's another one for me. I think it's because it can be tricky to find, so whenever I see that it's in stock on my usual site, I grab a can

      • x 4
    30. Fabric and Yarn: I use them for other things! Sometimes! Mostly the yarn! But no when I go to the thrift store I struggle to resist one of those $1 fabric chunks, and the yarn store? I'm supporting a local business! It's fine! It's fine. I think this is part of why I end up with so many gathered rectangle skirts... So easy to find doll-skirt-size fabric bits.

Pants: ...I am terrible about sewing these myself. So on the increasingly rare occasions I order clothes, I generally include some pants.

Have you had much luck with thrifting? I've found a few 1/4 to 1/3 scale chairs in my local thrift stores' knickknacks sections, including a rocking chair for my 1/4 dolls and a bench that currently has off-topic dolls on it but would fit nicely for the BJDs.

    31. This is so me. I got into this hobby in the first place to explore a lifelong love of fashion styles, and oh boy have I! Every time I see a style that interests me, I create a new character to wear it and shell that character just to have an excuse to sew for it! So after so many years, I have a large collection of dolls and dressers full of doll clothing. :sweat

      • x 2
    32. Oh my god I’m the same way!! I currently have 7 cans stockpiled, because the only place I can get it locally is downtown and I hate driving there. The lowest I’ve let my stock go down to is 2 unused cans, and 1/2 of a used can.

      • x 4
    33. I can never own enough of other people's dolls. Keep em coming, guys!!

Same, but I need my favorite Hina to have all the hairstyles and she just happens to be exclusively blonde. Everyone else gets 1-2 wigs, but Hina? I want to buy her everything.

      • x 4
    34. Thrifting is why some of my dolls actually have chairs. I just have a horde of dolls so never enough seating to go around.

Also one more for the list I forgot white poster tack for eye putty, that is an I always need it item fore sure.

    35. @JaxxCapta and @Tippetarius - for affordable 1/3 and 1/4 chairs/benches/stools, may I recommend plant stands?
Hardware stores, dollar section of Target, dollar stores generally, hobby shops. They seem to be really popular right now. I've started grabbing them when they go on clearance. Target will sell stacked ones - the big one is perfect for 1/3, and the smaller one is great for 1/4.
I grabbed this barstool from Michael's clearance section, and the metal bench from Hobby Lobby's clearance aisle:

    36. Wigs! A few of my crew are still waiting on a permanent wig because I can't find what I'm looking for, and the places I used to get them from are either gone, or gone down hill.

Clothes! Some of mine are still needing more, or are waiting for me to find someone to make them their costu...er... working clothes.

Chairs! Mostly for my YOs and MSD kids. Though at the moment they're all put away right now, so it's a back-burner thing.

      • x 1
    37. @MaleficentMrsofEvil Did you search for planters at Michaels and Hobby Lobby to find the seating options?

      I can never have enough:
Clothes - I have more clothes than dolls and I really need to go through them.
Wigs - I could cut down on these more.
Eyes - I haven't bought any in a while surprisingly.

      I need:
seating options - and possibly stands.
Maintenance stuff like elastic and kips - I have yet to restring any of my dolls and I probably should.
      shoes
      underwear
      wig caps

      • x 1
    38. @jessholy - my sincerest apologies for using the wrong terms. You do not want a plant stand. You want plant risers.
For elastic, I strongly recommend ordering from a metric-system country (like AliExpress sellers in China). Trying to figure out if 5/16" or 5/32" is equivalent to 4 mm makes my brain hurt. It's so much easier to order by millimeters.
"Traditional" 1/3 scale dolls (Volks, Elfdoll, Angel of Dream, Iplehouse) tend to use 4 mm elastic for the large loop and 3 mm elastic for the arms.
For 1/4 scale dolls, you generally want 2 mm and 3 mm elastic.
For anything over 65 cm, I recommend picking up some 5 mm elastic. Dollmore Trinities (112 to 120 cm) use 6-8 mm elastic.
If you order shock cord, make sure the listing specifies that it is elastic (some shock cord is NOT) or "bungee." Oh, also - you want cord, NOT ribbon.

      • x 1
    39. Elves. :V

...My compulsion to buy faces I like with fun fantasy ears has landed me three boxes-full of floaters, which is why I'm parring way down this year. I have more trouble resisting new heads than anything else because, "It's just a head," and "I can buy it now and give it a body later." One in a while it works out, but uhh...

...Yeah, my track record isn't great.

Ergo, eye putty, proper eyes, and wigs are also things I 'never have enough' of... even with spare eyes and wigs just sitting there.

@Tippetarius Have you tried antiques and collectibles / tourist traps / art stores? Hobby Lobby at the least has stools probably intended for small plants. I've gotten some surprisingly good deals on 1/3rd furniture in small town antique shops- the worst I paid was $12, and the worst I've seen is $25, with the brand-new tourist trap furniture running more into the $35- $40 range.

I know it's hard for your big Iplehouse boys though. No good luck there. Sometimes TJ Maxx / Marshals / similar outlets have pet beds or decor that work for various sizes of BJD. The cat swings meant to look like those hanging basket chairs might be able to fit SID at least.

      • x 3
    40. @Loptr I hit up those places too. Sadly the local antiques shops tends to be pretty pricey on things. (no idea why it's not a big city.) I've gotten a few doll chairs at fair prices like $10 to $15 bucks, but more often then not even the cheaper looking doll chair/s tend to be closer to $30 at the antique shops here.
My issue is I got a lot of the big guys SIDs, 65cm to 75cm guys (and a few tall girls too). ADD to that I just have a lot of dolls of all sizes and it's just never enough to go around. XD
Side note we (my S.O. and I) have a lovely doll sized sofa that is actually a pet bed it was a rare find, my S.O. won it as a prize in a raffle at a doll meet a handful of years ago.

Also omfg yeah elf ears can be a weakness, never enough elves, or fanged dolls for that matter. Bonus points if a doll has fangs and pointed ears. /swoon

    41. I can never own enough of a few things and am always hunting for them:

GOOD doll jewelry. Nothing beats in scale chains, charms and sparkles that add to my fancy boys. I can't get enough of it. I can use human stuff sometimes, but when it's specifically made for dolls it just feels right. My favorite jewelry maker is Gentlybeaded and I swear I give her half my life savings. I adore her work more than anything.

Lacy, antique clothing for boys! I can't be stopped. I won't be stopped. Do I have too many boxes of this stuff? Yes. Will I downsize? Over my dead body :XD:

Peakswoods boys, elves elves and some more elves, minifees, nice clothing, Switch wigs! So many things. I really need stands and shoes, but let's be honest with ourselves here... I'm probably not going to buy shoes. My dolls have bare feet unless they NEED it for an outfit to come together, and I'm just fine with that.

I do need stands... so many stands. Big Idealian stands and SD17, but they're so hard to find for a reasonable price and pricey to ship. I wonder if it'll ever happen.

    42. SHOES
I cannot wear high heels or sandals, not to mention many other types of trianers, boots, etc. I have a club foot and the size difference is 4 sizes (paired with the limb shorter by more than an inch- which means an extra insole). So I am limited down to biker boots and some models of Vans.

That said,I'm grateful I can walk (I am into daily long-distance walking). But I am into aesthetics and while I can make the clothes on my own, I could never make the shoes I can possibly buy.

And so I have a big box with dozens of pairs inside <3 I usually go for the expensive SD16 girl heels off etsy, some nice oxfords for my boys and some of the newly more popular ugly sneaker types. Winter heels, summer heeled sandals... loafers... I WANT THEM ALL <3

I am aware of that if I could wear some of such shoes, I'd never invest as much into the dolly shoes. But frankly, I know that even women with healthy feet prefer trainers or sneakers to heels 24/7 because of the comfort. So I'm realistic that even if I were buying real 'human' shoes... they'd be in the closet waiting for the rare occassions. So I'd rather have a collection that can fit one/two shoe boxes than 20 or more lol :D Same aesthetic effect, much less space needed :)

    45. @CutieKitty - there is a reason nearly all my dolls wear revealing clothes and high high high heel shoes. My dolls wear things I will not or cannot wear.
To everyone - Dollmore is having a nice wig sale until May 31, 2024, and you can stack the 15 percent off coupon for members (to become a member, sign up for an account. It's free).
@ElectricMauve - I am both a beginner knitter and sewist. Hasn't stopped me from buying all the fabric.

    46. I just thought of something else (in addition to their wardrobes) that I can’t get enough of: these amazing hats by the very talented hat maker FancifulDelightsCo on Etsy. I swear I’m addicted! Each one is a spectacular little work of art in and of itself, and is so beautifully and artistically wrought. I just can’t help myself. In fact, this past year I bought and retrofitted a special cabinet just to display them, making them easier for me to see and enjoy. I just purchased another one yesterday…and that makes it 32 (and I only have 7 SD girls to wear them!) I guess you could call this a collection within a collection.

    47. Wing accessories, apparently - I'm weak for head/ear wings and back wings, made out of resin. Since I was a BJD newbie my dream was to give my dolls wings, and I'm stoked that I can find various resin ones out there now! I've been getting them when I can find them, and should probably stop :sweat

    48. I need more stands. I now have enough for all my MSD-size dolls (although I realise I have one incoming, so I will need one more), but my smaller dolls are still flopping about.

I could also use more seating.

I'm currently trying to get all my dolls completely dressed (including wigs and eyes), and then my next project will be to actually sort my doll stuff and start throwing things away. (I somehow keep holding on to a lot of junky wigs and cheap eyes and damaged clothes...)

    49. Definitely more doll clothes! I really like putting my guy into different outfits.

    50. ... This. And I specifically collect fabrics with cute patterns. They are my weakness!! I just can't stop buying them...

I have to (shamefully) admit to buying a lot of floating heads, too. :sweat Definitely need more bodies.
