I guess it's time for me to crawl out of the shadows, eh? You can call me Rekka (or Sarah, whichever you prefer). I first learned about BJDs somewhere in the early 2000s (I would guess 2006-2007 or so), and although I was immediately intrigued by the possibility of using them to create my original characters, Teenage Me definitely didn't have that kind of money, nor the audacity to ask her family for such a thing. Consequently, I forgot about them almost immediately. Fast forward to 2022. A friend gifts me a blind box BJD, and although she's cute, she's not really my style. I shelved her for a while... until more blind box BJDs started to show up, and this time, they were proper creature people. Merfolk, dragons, etc. They started making them with inset eyes. Now they had my attention. The gateway was open. There was only one problem: a terrible lack of cute male sculpts, or anything other than immature/chibi looking designs. All my favorite OCs are men, and I'm not fond of child dolls (never have been, I was a Dinosaur Girl growing up, and the only type of doll I owned was a single Barbie who ended up as dino food... I got her only because I wanted the whale that came with her), so this obviously wouldn't do... I don't recall exactly when I decided to look, but somewhere in the midst of voraciously devouring information on how to customize dolls, the misty depths of my brain conjured up a familiar old name from the distant past: Den of Angels. And so I ended up checking in to see the latest in Big Girl BJD technology. Imagine my surprise when I see that there is not only a stunning selection of regular, handsome BJD fellas (my heart was swiftly stolen by Loongsoul's He Yi, whose face immediately struck me as a perfect match for one of my favorite OCs), but even better: tons of mythological creatures. I have no recollection of such things back in the day, and I'm immediately put in a chokehold, particularly by the likes of Dream Valley, who could single-handedly bankrupt me if they wanted. The Achelous in my avatar is proof of that! And he's just the first, I have more coming from them. Since I never do a new hobby halfway, I ended up making a series of dubious financial decisions, and now I'm here, with several "real" BJDs in-hand, several more ordered, and a whole slew of new art supplies added to my existing workshop full of such things. I'm a reluctant sort when it comes to socializing, so I won't make any promises, but I'm excited to be in the company of fellow character enthusiasts and artists. I'm hoping that being here might actually help motivate me to start on my project dolls, so the poor dears don't languish in obscurity forever.
Welcome! As a person who has made several financial decisions myself, I feel that, lol. Who do you have on order? Do be sure to share pictures! In the Discussion tab, collectors share dolls by company and size. So, for example, you might find some fellow collectors who also have DV Achelous here. Post when you want, and we'll be here when you're ready!
Thank you, both for the welcome and the tip! I'll have to stop by when I have some more pictures of my ragtag crew (took a few, but not of all of 'em). As it turns out, it can be a little difficult to get good pictures when you have a large, curious dog with astounding slobber output, which you definitely don't want anywhere near your dolls The fellows I have on order right now are: Dream Valley Ehecatl (nude) and Velarde (fullset), and Dollzone Light (fullset). I'm absurdly excited about all of them, but particularly Light, because I've been wanting to make myself a "Biblically Accurate Christmas Angel" for years! I would also have Dollzone's new dragon boy on preorder, except that he hasn't been made available anywhere yet, and I'm getting real antsy about that.
Hi and welcome to DoA! I also have mainly mature male OCs and some dragons, mers, seahorses and snakes. There are so many wonderful sculpts out there now. Loongsoul have some amazing looking guys as do Ringdoll. Dream Valley doing great things and thosee Dollzone dragons look great. I hope you post lots of pics when they arrive. I also get the fun of trying to take photos with a large dog around. Fortunately my husky is mostly not interested in my dolls though. See you around the forums
Thank you! Ah, I see you are a person of excellent taste Not gonna lie, I've been mightily tempted by Ringdoll a time or two, especially as a Hua Cheng Enjoyer. I have a feeling it's only a matter of time before they put something out there that I can't resist. I definitely plan to post some pictures once more of my dolls arrive. I ended up getting that dragon (not the wyvern, I mean Ying Long, the 1/3 scale half-human one, though the wyvern was super tempting) after all, and I'm pretty sure the saga of me trying to faceup and body-blush that monstrosity will make its way here eventually. Such an undertaking requires documentation. I think I'll have to build some sort of PVC structure merely to hold him up while I paint!
