How to sew fake fur? Help please ;_;

Sep 19, 2005

    1. I have some nice fake fur and am thinking of making a coat for Shiro (Hound)...but don't really know how to get around sewing it. I've seen some people lining their fur coats, does that make it easier? Any instruction or links or whatnots would be much much appreciated.

      Thanks

    2. I probably wouldn't put it under a sewing machine. My aunt made my boy a fake fur blanket and it just gathered and bunched up under the machine because of how cheap fake fur is made. If you get the expensive stuff (80ish dollars a metre) then there wont be that problem.

      The only way we found to sew it under a machine was to have one person hold it out tight and sew slowly, unpicking a lot when it bunched. Hand sewing doesn't have this problem though (though cutting it is a nightmare unless you do it very slowly).

      I would suggest lining just so it looks nicer, but I don't think it would help the sewing process... I'm no seamstress though, these are just my personal experiences.

    3. If you have a special needle for the machine, that should work! Or maybe a special machine too...... I've sewn a couple of things in fake fur on my machine, and it when sper fine! It was acually harder to make jeans caus of the hard fabric! :wink:
      Good luck!!! :daisy :daisy

    4. It's easiest to hand sew, as it's bulky and no matter how messy your stitches are you won't see them! Especially if you line it. I do sew fake fur on my machine and I use the overlock stitch, that seems to work well. If you do have problems with it, try asking at your local sewing store what they recommend or try sewing.about.com they have a really helpful sewing forum!

    5. Waaa you guys have good sewing machines!! I guess mine is just too old to do fancy things like that. It has two options: straight stitch and button stitch, but I lost the other needle to do buttons so now it only has one option :oops:

    6. I once made a coat for myself out of fake fur, and I agree with batchix that it's much easier to sew by hand. I followed instructions I found in a book on sewing with real fur: I cut the seam allowances off the pattern pieces before I cut out the fake fur, then, with right sides together, I overcast the pieces together. It's a little tedious but not too bad for an SD-sized coat, and it makes a non-bulky, not-too-noticeable seam. If you brush the fur away from the seam you're overcasting, very little hair will get caught in the seam, and what does can be picked out with a needle.

      The overcast seams on the inside of the coat don't look too bad, but it's possible for a doll finger to get caught on the stitches if the coat isn't lined. When I made my own coat, I sewed the lining separately, using the usual 5/8 inch seam allowances and sewing it on a sewing machine.

    7. Wow, thanks for all the wonderful info guys. I never knew you'd sew fur from the right side *laughs* am so glad i posted.

      Will take all tips in account and try to make something decent

    8. It also helps if you trim some of the fur off within your seam allowance. This reduces some of the bulk that can occur. Another option is to check out the instructions on making teddy bears - they usually have a lot of tips on dealing with fur!
