Maintenance How to remove 401 Locktite glue?

Nov 7, 2022

    1. Hey everyone!

As the title says, I'd like to know if anyone here has experience with removing 401 glue from resin and is willing to share.

As a short backstory, I used 401 glue to reattach the magnets to one of my boy's head, but I think it ended up being thicker than intended and so the head cap doesn't close perfectly. One of the magnets have fallen off again since, and there's glue residue in the hole where the magnet used to be. So, I'd love to know how to get this glue residue out without ruining the resin.

      Thanks a lot! :)

    2. Have you tried using freezing or soaking in warm water to loosen up the glue already? If the head has a faceup you like on in granted, those may not be the best ideas, depending on which side the magnet is on.

    3. Yeah, removing the glue is quite a process. I've managed to remove the actual magnets, but haven't tried the glue itself. Maybe try soaking it in some nail polish removed and scraping the top of residue off? Assuming it softens. You can use cotton swabs for a more careful application and worse comes to worse, any damage within the magnet hole won't be visible once you put the magnets back in

    4. I've removed super glue before with Windsor and Newton brush cleaner, which is what you can normally use to remove Faceups. It's just a bit of work and patience.

    5. Have you tried superglue remover?

    6. I haven't! Thankfully the side that needs to be fixed is the headcap side, not the face side. Trying this method totally slipped my mind, because I assumed 401 glue to be quite persistent. I'll definitely just pop the headcap in the fridge and give it a try! :3nodding:

I could try that! Only one of the magnets have come off though, and I have no idea how to get the other one out of the headcap :...( But I'll need to get myself proper pure acetone, I think it's better not to use my nail polish remover (which also contains some kind of citrus oil and colouring..) :shudder

Hi Teddy! I actually did not know superglue remover exists... :eusa_sile It's good to know that that's an option, but I hope I won't have to come to that!

    7. I never glue anything without the remover within reach. It's come in handy a time or two - one time a bride came to collect her wedding dress and I accidentally superglued her foot to the floor of my sewing room.... Superglue Remover to the rescue!

    8. Oh wow, what a story! Thank goodness for superglue remover!!! Now I really need to get myself some just in case something like this happens :XD::XD:

    9. Removing the magnet itself is also quite an adventure I had to go through a couple of weeks ago. For me it was a combination of acetone (brush cleaner didn't seem strong enough, as the magnet was fit pretty tightly), freezing, "cooking" the head cap in boiling water, and pulling the magnet out with another one. It was either boiling or the combination of everything that did the trick. No damage from the hot water either, but the resin becomes a bit softer. So, be careful when pulling

    10. Looks like the acetone & super glue remover suggestions are best for the spot where the magnet has already come loose.
And the hot & cold tips for removing the other magnet if need be...good thing it isn't the mechanical use red loctite as the instructions for removing it are more extreme!

    11. Ooooh, thank you for sharing your experiences! I feel like in theory, boiling the head cap should definitely do the trick, but I hope it won't come to that point :shudder I have this lowkey fear.jpg of accidentally squishing the softened resin or something HAHA

Thank you, it does seem to be the case! :3nodding: I'll try out the acetone first, then the freezing method. And oh yes, I'm glad it isn't the red loctite either... the blue one is already stubborn enough :(

    12. A drop or two of acetone and a few minutes wait, sometimes with a little scraping or dental-picking, will dissolve almost any cyanoacrylate "super" glue, like loctite or Krazy glue.

    13. awesome, thank you so much for the affirmation Rosslyn! that’s what I needed to hear

    14. Happy to help! Just don't get the acetone on any faceup or blushing- it'll strip it right off! Wash it off the resin once you're done, and you'll be fine.

    15. oh yea!! thanks for the reminder, I’ll make sure to wash! :3nodding:
do you happen to know if coloured nail polish remover can be used? that’s the only source of acetone I have right now, but I was thinking of getting some clear acetone in case I end up accidentally dyeing the resin :XD:

    16. I'd try never to use colored nail polish remover. You guessed it- Clear is safest, because people have stained dolls in the past with the dyed stuff.

    17. yikes! that's good to know - i can only imagine if the whole face got dyed with that stuff when removing the faceup :shudder I'll definitely get some clear acetone then. thanks so much again Rosslyn!<3
