Esthetics How to fix wigs correctly?

Apr 28, 2020

    1. Hey everyone,

I really have a problem with fitting wigs.
I used to fix them to the dolls heads with eyeputty.

I used a good eyeputty by Faber-Kastell, the thing is just it leaves green stains (not permanent, but I don't want to have to clean the heads all the time).

For my new wig I have to fix the sides. The hair is worn out of the face and the sideburns stand away.

I tried using another eyeputty wich is skin colored. But the consistency is different.
It was very hard to remove it and I was very angry because after removing the MSC was scratched off. My new faceup already is damaged (not very much, but it made me very angry and sad).

I don't want to wear the wig on my precious doll anymore, because I have so much fear to damage the faceup again... But there's an outfit where he really needs that wig and the wig is also very nice... I want him to wear it again.

I hope someone can help me with this.
Is there any way to fix the wig in a nice way close to the head without staining or ruining anything?

Thanks so much, you always save and educate me so much.

    2. Have you thought about the Volks wig velcro? it's very fine, thin and works well. They sell it on the volks usa site.

    3. I use kneadable eraser instead of eye putty- it's not quite so sticky and wont stain or lead to damage because it's very easy to remove using itself (it sticks more to itself than other things, to remove it you just dab at it with a little more kneadable eraser)

    4. I’ve had great luck with silicone wig caps, but while stuff is in the mail, a thick rubber band can sometimes hold everything in place. I’ve used Velcro, but I’ve also tightened the wig, but I’d practice on something you don’t love first

    5. never heard about this at all... is it also like eyeputty?
      I will try google-ing it.

oh my... such an easy solution....! I will try that out. But I can't imagine... is it sticky enough?

    6. Yeah it is, you have to knead it a while to get it sticky but then ive found it to work quite well! I use it instead of eye putty to keep eyes in place too!

    7. The velcro does work all right for holding a wig, but if you change wigs often you might want to chose something else, since it will wear on the wig for every removal and can damage the wig over time.

    8. as long as it doesn't damage my holy faceup I'm happy with it :D

    9. I use clear anti-slip tape, works wonderful and can be cut in any size and shape and doesn't stick to the hairs like velcro.

    10. If you are using a stretchy cap wig, you can line just above the elastic inside the wig with a line of hot glue, wait until the hot glue is completely cool and then put the wig on the doll. The hot glue will create friction but won't damage the face up nor the resin, nor the wig and it will be enough to keep the wig in place. If the wig is not a stretchy cap kind, then I would also recommend the kneading eraser, I use those for holding eyes of all kinds of materials for many kinds of dolls for over fifteen years, without any damage whatsoever to the eyes nor the resin/plastic, nor any residues of any sort left behind. Hope that helps and good luck. (:

    11. Really I'm so thankful for your help!!!! You once again rescue me <3 the hobby has so many traps
I will absolutely try out the magic eraser trick.
The hot glue also sounds good

The face up is a bit damaged on the area where I have to put the magic eraser. You all assure me this would be safe, so I want to ask again... it's not risky, when I put it on the scratches?
I sanded them down with a fine sponge, so the area is rather smooth now.
I dont want to create bigger scratches.
      Sorry for my Paranoia xD

    12. Kneaded/ing erasers are meant for creating art, they are meant to pick up pigment, like pastels from paper without smudging it everywhere -- but they more like a putty than other rubber erasers in texture. Although they are like a putty, they are without any chemicals, because they are meant for art -- art materials should always be archival, more so the ones meant to be used on paper. I usually use the ones by the brand "Generals," because those remain very soft and have no scent of any sort even when they get super old. I have tried other brands and some get crumbly or start smelling really weird, or simply dry out.

These erasers will definitely not scratch the face up, and even less the resin. Again, they are soft playable rubber-material, but they are meant for drawing on paper, so they are meant to be used on fragile surfaces without any damage left behind. I would highly suggest to look for the General brand ones, because the other brands I've tried have dried or smelled weird over time which might be difficult to remove later on, but all of them should be pretty safe to use on resin without scratching it or the face up. (:

    13. I use rubber bands! :D

I will take the really wide ones (sometimes used for produce), and kind of double it over so it's wrapped around the head twice, and that usually helps me out a lot. :)

    14. I know this thread is a little bit old, but I've been using white balloons from the dollar store! Just cut to fit, they're perfect for my MSD!

    15. I came to decide for the magic eraser and I really love it!No stains, no damage to msc :D I'm still so thankful for this advice

    16. A magic eraser WILL damage the sealant over a faceup. You can fully remove a faceup with just a magic eraser.

    17. They mean kneadable eraser, if you read the thread. Kneadable erasers wont cause damage.

    18. I just make wigs that fit the heads snugly

    19. I only use a rubber band

    20. Even on the very shiny resin heads? I haven't found one to stay without using 'something' for it to grip on. But, you may have the answer.

    21. my wigs are sewn and they are snug enough to hold the head, I make them on the sculpt they are for. you should need nothing

    22. How can you adjust a wig if it was make using the hot glue method ?

    23. I make wigs that fit the head exactly, even on shiny heads

    24. Do you make wigs to sell? If so, I'd like to know where to order one.
