How to Fix Squeaky Joints

Jun 11, 2020

    1. Hey!

Recently, my boy’s body arrived in the mail. The body (2DDoll) is second hand and has really squeaky joins that are inconsistent in their stiffness/looseness. So my question is, how do I fix this? Would just restringing work?

Hope to get some feedback on this. Thanks :)

    2. Restringing might work, but I find the best solution to squeaky and/or wobbly joints is sueding. It's definitely a process and can cost money depending on what method you go for, but I think it's well worth it. My largest doll (62cm), who I also got second hand, had the squeakiest joints and crazy wobbly legs, but some new elastic and suede got him moving just like new.

This is a great tutorial about sueding, with lots of good info

Like I said though, if you don't want to go through that whole process, restringing may help some of the stiffness inconsistencies at the very least. Hope this helps!

    3. I'm no pro by any means, but restringing would probably be a good place to start. My Dollzone girl was pretty similar from the sounds of it. With me it wasn't an intentional fix, but when I took her apart to do the body blushing, after I put her back together she stopped squeaking and posed waaay better >.>) it was the same old elastic, but I made sure that the knots were more in the body than they were originally when I took her apart.

If that doesn't do the trick for you, there is always giving hot glue or felt sueding a try. LavilyDay has a pretty good step by step how to with hot glue.

    4. If the body is new, the elastic should be fairly new as well. So it should still be pretty tight - maybe a tad too tight. In time, it will start to stretch out a bit more, and then the balls and sockets would not be pressed so hard together, which would make them squeak less.

Or you could loosen the knots in the elastic, or switch out the elastic completely, but I think hot glue sueding would be a good option. :)
