Wigs How to dye silk wigs?

Apr 9, 2022

    1. Hi everyone,

I just bought a wig with the perfect hairstyle for my first doll. Problem is, it comes in grey-silver and I need the hair to be a dark-blueish grey getting slight lighter near the tip of the hairs. The seller told me that the hair is made of "soft silk" and is not heat resistant. All the resources I've found so far are for natural hairs like mohair, and for synthetic hair, but I haven't found any tutorials for silk hair.

Does anyone know how to dye (preferably with a color gradient) "soft silk" hair wigs? Thanks in advance!

    2. If it really is silk fiber from a silk worm rather than plastic, man -made fiber, silk can be dyed using acid dyes.

Dharma's has some that can be used on nylon fiber as well.

    3. Thank you for the help! Since they stated the wig is not heat resistant, will it work to soak it in cold water mixed with the dye?

    4. Yes, you will just need to let it sit for a day, or maybe even two. If the dye you pick still has to be mixed, mix the crystals with boiling water to fully dissolve them in a small bowl. Let this cool some, till you feel it is safe to pour on what you want dyed, then add cool water so the fiber part you want colored is covered by water plus dye mix, then let sit for two days.

    5. Also could try this method, less control of how the color lands perhaps, but very easy method, and awesome:

    6. Silk itself should be reasonably heat resistant--it's a protein fiber and can be heat set like regular hair, albeit at a lower temperature since it is very fine.

I'd really recommend taking a strand of fiber from the wig and doing a burn test on it first--if it melts and blobs up, it's a synthetic fiber and acid dyes will not work on it. Burning silk gets kind of powdery and smells a lot like, well, burning hair.
