Wanted How-to draft and sew pants for idiots (me, I'm the idiot)

Mar 13, 2023

    1. Hi there lovely people!

I'm an idiot about sewing; more specifically I can't for the life of me understand how to sew pants. I get confused in the actual drafting phases on top of always ending up sewing the wrong parts together (like I usually end up with a single tube like thing). I'm looking for a pattern or tutorial for pants that explains literally every step like I have never seen a pair of pants before. It does not have to be doll sized since I am struggling more with the basic principles of pants, but if there is a really in-depth explanation you know of in an MSD or YoSD size then I'm all...legs? I have been scouring the existing threads and general YouTube/internet to try to secure an "aha" moment, but it has yet to come. There's always something wonky about how my pants come out, and they end up getting recycled into something else, so unfortunately there are no existant garments to check what I'm doing wrong >.<'

(General encouragement is also welcome because I am rapidly losing hope that I will ever be able to sew pants without someone showing me irl lol)

    3. hang in there! <3 i know what its like to get tubes when you want a garment ._. solidarity!

so idk what im doing either, but i found this vid
      .

also re:drafting - ugh i would not want to do that as a beginner. in fact, i am one and i dont. here are some alternatives: https://freesewing.org/designs/ - input measurements, generate patterns*
https://missysimaginings.com/ a lot of bjd patterns in a lot of sizes

*its probably user error (eg. me messing up measurements) but i get some weird results from these sometimes x_x hopefully you wont

oh and it looks like marking the front and back pieces helps, going by the vid. if you have washable fabric marker i think its a good idea.

    4. Y'all really came in clutch! I think I'll see if I can find some sewing stuff laying around my boyfriend's house just to practice while I'm here for two weeks. If I was using my noodle, I'd have brought my backpack full of sewing stuff :doh at least I thought to bring my crochet (and related ephemera). I could also probably take this opportunity to meet his grandmother and ask for some sewing things while I'm visiting, but that might be a little cavalier of me. Anyways lol thanks for the effort everyone!

definitely check out what everyone has posted here! And good luck to you on your sewing adventures:3nodding:

WOAH that video explained it super well! I've been basically trying to do the first method but ending up doing the first steps of the second method '>.> oops lol

Those websites are going to come in handy!

Thank you so much for this comment! :whee:

This is an amazing tutorial as well! Thank you! :dance

    5. Why not try a simpler pattern like this? It uses two pieces instead of four. Marking pattern pieces might also help you sew the correct seams to each other.

    6. That's an excellent tutorial as well, thank you! I do try to start with pattern pieces in most cases (I have a nice doll sewing book--mostly in Japanese--that has amazing pictures plus patterns in the back), but something always ends up screw-y likely because of my brain doesn't manipulate shapes well. I was also trying to do the 4 piece method with 2 pieces :sweat Having the option to try both styles of pant-making with such clear tutorials is going to be really helpful in building a more solid understanding of how the fabric needs to be manipulated. Tangrams and such have never been a strength for me and sewing pattern pieces together feels a lot like kindergarten manipulatives time all over again lol *_*

    7. For sorting out a pants sloper, I love Lomi's video on it:

For sewing pants patterns, I feel that. They can be a maze to figure out. For most basic ones (with two pieces), I hem the legs, sew the front crotch seam together from where it juts out to the top and hem it, hem the top (and insert any elastic if I'm doing a casing for it), sew the back crotch/back as far as I need (up about halfway if I don't have elastic, all the way if there is elastic) and hem it. At this stage, the only open seam should be the inseam, so the final step is to flatten it so it's in the shape of pants, then sew and hem that last seam.

    8. Ah yeah, I am familiar with Lomi's stuff. That was where the madness started, specifically the website patterns for bloomer-esque pants. The attempted bloomers ended up turning into a skirt since I couldn't figure out the basics of what shape I needed to be making *_* But armed with the new tutorials and fresh eyes, all of Lomi's stuff makes WAY more sense and I feel much more confident to try it again!

Thanks for the little tutorial as well. I think I am going to take a stab at some pants whenever I get ahold of some needles and fabric.

    9. Mina desperately needs clothing and a new wig, so I took the plunge and have sewn her some pants! Finally, finally, finally I understand how to do it and it was all thanks to you lovely doll people ^-^
