How to deep clean a second hand plush toy?

Jan 25, 2023

    1. 1. How to properly wash a plush toy?

      2. What materials can be used specifically for plush toys?

      3. How to properly dry a plush toy?

      4. Any other advice?

I was watching a Japanese channel about plush toys and the person was washing a very filthy teddy bear. It got me thinking on the proper ways to wash a plush toy. I usually just stuff it in a pillowcase then wash it in the washer and then dry it in the dryer, but I don't think this is really a great method. Some plush toys have certain texture fur that gets damaged in the washer.

There was no English subtitles, so I'm not sure how to copy the washing technique in this video.

    3. Mmmm well some fabrics have their own lifespan. As a personal preference, if I snatch a secondhand plush toy with a lovely or intricate pattern, I just take the pattern. Some of the fabrics may be rotten and not worth saving and any product will only disintegrate them, or maybe they have some fungus or who knows what vermin.

This reminds me of something I heard from my sister. My sister loves Furbys so she follows some facebook groups with resellers and collectors, one time she told me that the community was very upset about a case where I girl got a very bad deal, she got a Furby with ticks in their fur; this was unacceptable since the community is quite friendly and has a great love for these toys, but this is the kind of risk with second-hand plush toys

I don't recommend saving an old doll you bought secondhand, but it would be great to salvage an old doll of your own that has gone through a few rough years so thanks for the video.

    4. When I’ve had to wash a plushie, I have used one of those mesh bags which are specifically for delicates and have likewise used detergents for delicates (and colour-safe oxy powder.) Washer settings for delicates and/or wool. No spin drying, tumbling or heat. After it’s been through the wash, I then hand squeeze out as much water as I can before leaving to dry on a surface with holes so there is airflow around it and it can drain further on its own. Finally I make sure to turn it over periodically and expose any surfaces which haven’t been able air as much. But my favourite and most successful way of cleaning older plushies is manual spot cleaning. I’m lucky in that the plushies I collect usually only need that rather than true deep cleaning. (And none of them have ever come to me in an outright filthy state thankfully!)

    5. I watch a show called the repair shop, the way their professional teddy bear restorers do it is the de stuff the bear, then very gently hand wash it. Then they let it air dry and restuff it with new stuffing.

I did this with my little ones favorite stuffie and it was night and day. I used a little dawn dish soap and oxyclean, but he's a modern stuffed animal.
