Faceups How to add paint or pastels to an existing faceup?

Oct 25, 2004

    1. Lol, yeah you might want to go get one! >__< Electric ones are the best so you won't tire out your hands and get cramps!

    2. Thank you for your answer. I guessed it would be better to spray the whole face, but I'm still worried about the rest of the faceup. :sweat I'll keep in mind the masking tape for the lips !

    3. If you want, you can re-gloss the lips, masking would work better though. >__<

    4. Make sure you shake the can of MSC really good. And of course don't spray on humid days as that seems to cause fogging.

Good luck. I have a similar job I want to do on a faceup, but I want to remove the whole eyebrows while trying to keep the eyes....not sure it's going to work out. If not I'll have to wipe the whole darn face I guess.

    5. Oh! Rather obvious, but please remember to remove the eyeballs! Lol!

    6. Will do !

    7. I have a little question! I love my boy's default faceup except for his eyebrows-- I want them to be thicker. There's one problem though-- he's tan resin. What would I do in this case? Because I know MSC can sometimes make tan skin lighter. So, if I only apply it to his eyebrows will it makes the skin there lighter then the rest of his face?

    8. If you're good with a paintbrush, you can thicken the eyebrows with strokes of acrylic paints (diluted with either water or a medium, depending on how vivid you want the strokes. Then you can just seal the eyebrows with a topcoat of acrylic "varnish" (NOT an oil-paint type varnish! It's acrylic too, and comes in matte, satin, or gloss.)

    9. Hihi! ^_^

I am planning on getting a Minifee Shushu with a default faceup sometime in the next year. I would like to add a bit of color to the eyes, and a touch of pink to the lips, but I'm wondering what would be the best way to do this, without harming the default faceup. I would probably be using pastel since that would give the best effect.

Could someone who has done this please tell me what they did? Is it possible to add to the existing default without harming the default in the process? If I were to mess up and need to remove some color would that be possible without touching the default?

      Thanks in advance!

    10. You wont damage the face-up just by adding pastels to it. And yes, you can remove the pastels if you dont like it, but do it carefully, and dont keep removing and adding pastels though or else the face-up will chip off. Been there, done that.

And it's kinda impossible to add to the eyes and lips because they'll be glossed. :/ I dont know how they glossed Shushu's eyes, but I think her eyelids will be glossed so you cant add anything to it. Lips will definitely be glossed.

Why dont you consider sending her out to a face-up artist? I think it'll be easier for you since you can specify what you want her face-up? Hope this helps you in anyway! :)

    11. Ah, okay :) I never thought that you wouldn't be able to put pastel over gloss... good to know :) Thanks :)

What if I MSC'd over the gloss and default? Then would I be able to add pastel and re-gloss? Cause I have some Tamiya (I think thats the spelling...lol) gloss.

    12. I added pastel to my kids eyes and lips! If you spray a coat of MSC over the whole head, the gloss effect wont be there anymore. It won't be glossy and spreading pastel on them would be the same as spreading it on any normal resin surface! ;)

    13. Ah! Thank you! That's exactly the answer I was hoping for! ^_^ Yay!

    14. Just make sure to use MSC and no other sealer (unless one that is approved for bjd-use). I once used paper-fixator because I thought that if it held pastels on paper, it would do the same on resin... wrong >.< ruined the whole faceup.
But when using the right materials, I don't see any problems. Start out with lighter layers though, it's always possible to add more afterwards and wiping can leave stains on the original faceup.

      good luck

    15. Yes, I will always only use MSC :) hehehe

      Thanks!

    16. Helpful thread, thanks for the info!!

    17. I haven't done this myself, but I watched, hovering Revilis' shoulder while she added to a default Bygg faceup for a friend of mine:

I believe she did pastel, pearl-ex powder, acrylic paint for the enhanced eyelashes, with MSC in-between layers, and a teeny bit of gloss to re-shine the lips...there was no damage to the default, but I would guess it could be tricky to fix mistakes without touching the original...

    18. I own a doll who came with a face-up done by the company I bought him from and have been wanting to change it for awhile now. The thing is, the eyebrows are the only part i want to change, the rest of the face-up is excellent. Has anyone done this before? Would it be better to remove them or paint over them? Suggestions would be great!

    19. Eyebrows, unless you intend to make them thicker, there's not too much you can do.
Depending on the shape you're going for, you might be able to change that by painting a bit on either ends.

It really depends on how dark the original eyebrows were, what shape they are, and what you want to do with them.

Do you have a picture of the current face-up? Or you said it was a default one, you can link the company page.

Though, like any other addition to a face-up, seal with MSC first, paint the additions, reseal. Several layers may be required.

    20. His eyebrows are so thin, i just wanted to thicken them up and possible darken them. Sounds like thats a good position to be in by what you've said. Thanks for the advice!

ps he is a D.O.C. vamp. ivan if you wanted to see what Im talking about.

    21. Sorry, noob question... I've been looking through face-up tutorials and guides and its usually about working on a doll face that has been cleaned up/ blank.

Is it possible just to add a touch up/ addition on a doll direct from company that has a basic face up?
E.g. I'm happy with the rest of the face but just want to add some sliver colour to the eyelids....

Or is this something that is not recommended for whatever reasons?
Would love to hear from the experts/ more -experienced fellow owners here. <3 Thank you!

    22. I've touched up a lot of face-ups. Some of them have been company ones, others have been my own. As far as I know, there's nothing harmful in touch-ups.

Just make sure that 1. you're re-sealing it with the same spray that the basic face-up was sealed with (I don't know if bad things can happen if you layer different sprays, but I'd err on the side of caution) and 2. the head is clean before you re-spray it. If your doll has eyelashes, you might have to replace them. MSC and other sprays can easily leave a 'frost' of residue on doll lashes.

And finally, good luck! My first project was changing the eyebrows on my second doll. I think starting with small changes is a great way to start learning how to do face-ups. :)

    23. Thanks so much!! Also to the mod who found this thread! <3

    24. My Bobobie Appollo had taken a fall recently He was unharmed other then he removed part of his face-up. How can I go about fixing his face-up without removing it completely?

    25. It might help if you could post photos so we can see the extent of the damage.

(A good place to start would be reading the sticky about Respiratory Protection!)

    26. I dont know how to post pictures to show the extent of the damange...

    27. Thanks for answering this-I had the same question. So if I like 95% of a faceup, I could spray MSC on it (but block out the lips) and work on it some more? Then spray again? Should I be worried about too much MSC and making the face easier to chip? I have worked on Pullips, but not on resin bjd-I want to make sure I don't mess it up. >.<

    28. You have to be careful not to spray too heavily.

Frankly, I've switched from MSC to the Volks Zukimura spray. There have been so many complaints about the latest formulations of MSC, apparently being more prone to chipping. Plus, I've found the ZM spray doesn't "ghost" on darker resins like MSC does. (I've also tried a can of the PuritySeal stuff. It worked very well, but you have to adjust your spraying technique as it comes out heavier. Also, over time what's in the can seems to thicken up a lot more than the ZM. It does produce a "toothier" surface than either of the other sprays.)

But the words above are good advice. And it pays to practice your spraying technique so you can "feather" the edge of the stroke and avoid any heavy edges or ridges. Also learning how to hold the material you're using to block off areas from spray is good. You don't want to just sit it down and get a ridge of spray appearing right across the face. Do remove eyes too! It's also good to have on hand a bottle of acrylic artist's varnish or medium in Satin and/or Gloss. That can be brushed on to return the gloss to lips, tear-ducts and fingernails after tweaking and spraying.

I'm constantly modifying existing faceups. Often I want to tweak lips or eyebrows. Eyelashes can be a problem, tho, and will need special consideration.

I've even taken heads that have aged - or the sealant has aged - yes, MSC yellows over time - and added a "freshening-up" all-over dusting of pastels in a white/pink/peachier shade and given the existing faceup an extended lifespan of use.

    29. I'm really hoping that's not a weird question - I received a doll whose faceup I LOVE, but does not have eyebrows and I was wanting to mod it a little to add them on.

Does anyone have any experience building onto an existing faceup? Any tips or tricks? Any absolute no-nos, or should I just not even attempt so I don't screw it up? D:

    30. I've done it on a couple of dolls. I just sprayed a coat of sealant like I would normally do, made my additions, then re-sealed the head. You will need to re-gloss any areas like lips or eyelids that are glossy now.

    31. Ahhhh shoot, the reglossing is a really good point that I didn't think of... I haven't gotten any sort of gloss as of yet, crap. I wonder, would it work to cover the portions of the face that are glossy? It's just the lips, honestly - I just worry about the sealant looking uneven, though I suppose you wouldn't be able to tell very well.

    32. If you do cover parts of the face, try to make sure to spray a light coat (by not spraying too close) and if possible not to spray it on the cover.
Also make sure to shake the can properly and spray in ideal weather so to avoid sealant problems, and to try use the same sealant as original face-up.

    33. Don't fret about glossing. It's easy :) Just give your last coat of sealant at least a day to dry, then brush on a layer of gloss. Let that dry completely (at least a day, again), then decide if you want more. It's much easier to do that than it is to cover parts of the face-up and worry about the sealant being even.

    34. Ahhh, awesome!!! THANK YOU <3

    35. Hello! I was gonna post this in Newbieland, but apparently, I'm no longer a newbie?

I tried looking this up, but the thread I saw had different responses. So I hope it's alright to post this over here.

I want to add a beauty mark on my doll's faceup (he's not here yet but will be this week, I've been told). I only asked LUTS to modify his default faceup by lightening the eyeshadow, any other modifications would have to be done via Custom Faceup, which isn't what I wanted. It's probably too late to ask them at this point either.

So I was wondering if there was a quick fix to this? Can I simply just dot it with a dark brown watercolor pencil over his sealant, or would the color seep through it and possibly stain the doll? If it does fade/rub off, it's not really a problem since I could just go over it with the pencil. Or should I add another coat of sealant, then add the beauty mark? I'm a little hesitant to go that route because I don't know what sealant Luts uses, and I'm afraid of damaging it with a different brand. But of course, I've never customized a doll before, so I may be misinformed about this.

Any help/advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks for reading :)

    36. Well, it could be possible, yes, but you've to remove the eyelashes with a bit of warm water to avoid to ruin them with the sealant.
Then apply the beauty marks you want, seal them with a proper sealant and reapply the gloss, since it would disappear after the sealant, and the eyelashes. Hope this helps.

    37. I'm pretty sure Luts does a decent job sealing their faceups, so I think you can add the beauty mark right away. If you use a watercolor pencil, it probably won't fade for a few years but it will smudge or wipe off if you touch it.

After you do that, you can seal just that area by covering the rest of the face with something. I've only done it a couple times but I used a paper towel and ripped a little hole it, then laid it over the head so that the hole is exposing what I want to seal (and I weighted down the edges of the paper towel so it didn't blow away when I sprayed on it LOL). This way you don't have to worry about re-glossing lips or ruining the eyelashes! I think some people use plastic wrap for this, too.

Anyway, you don't really NEED to seal it. I paint my own dolls and many times I decided to add something later, but I'm too lazy to re-spray it. XD Usually I use acrylic paint because it has more staying power, so even though it isn't sealed, it isn't going to just wipe off easily if you touch it.

    38. @overlordu This is what I'm talking about, thanks for the response! I was thinking of doing it with acrylics, but I keep hearing that it will seep through the sealant if I don't reseal it first :o

And the paper towel trick is actually really clever! The easily available sealant I can get is Army Painter, and I'm not sure how it will react to Luts' sealant, since it's just a small area it shouldn't be a problem, right?

Or... like what you said, maybe I shouldn't seal it? It's just a tiny dot below his eye anyway LOL. I'll look into getting acrylics this weekend, but for now, watercolor pencils will suffice ^^.

    39. Agreeing with overlordu here. There's no reason paint would seep through the sealant if it's brand new - the sealant on top of a faceup is the same stuff beneath all the layers to keep the color off the resin in the first place so you're putting a mark on top of even more layers of it than the original artist. I'd recommend putting the mark on with acrylic, because it's so difficult to smudge. I do beauty marks with it all the time and a tiny little dab will do the job without needing to be sealed to make it waterproof. Good luck!

    40. @EchoUndine @overlordu @Amet Thanks for the responses, everyone! I'll keep this thread updated once I get Cyrus ^^ I should probably invest in some acrylics for future faceups, I really want to try it out :)

    41. Hi everyone, sorry for necroing the thread, but I have a question I think would fit in here.
I have a DollZone Snow with an already made company face-up which I'd like to modify. I have MSC at home (which I read would work on DZ face-ups), but quite frankly I'm not really looking forward to use it because: a. I don't have the proper respiratory protection as of now (I've never even opened the can ever since I bought it) and b. I'd like to modify the doll's eyebrows, but to do so and use MSC spray I'd have to remove his eyelashes and I don't really want to do it, as they look really pretty :(
What I'd like to do, instead, is using the Liquitex Matte Varnish brush-on sealant with a sponge to modify the eyebrows and maybe add a few freckles. My question, however, is: how does Liquitex react to DZ's sealant? Would it be safe to use on a DZ company face-up?
