Wigs How much material to use for a wig?

Jul 26, 2021

    1. Hi everyone! I tried to find an answer to this specific question but didn't find it in any posts; if you know where it's been answered before, I'd love a link! <3

So I want to start practicing making wigs, but I'm not sure how much material I need to make them. Say for Teeswater wool for example, many sellers sell them in 1oz bundles. Would that be enough for a 7-8" wig? Would it be more than enough? How do you know approximately how much of a material you need to make a wig?

    2. it depends on what size head/wig and the material you're using, but off hand/from experience 1oz of teeswater is more than enough for 7-8", since teeswater is super curly and would puff up a bit!

I've seen the rule of thumb generally be 2oz for SD heads (3 or 4 for the bigger volks noggins I'd guess), 1oz for MSD heads, and logically I think .5oz for YOSD should be fine, but it really depends on the fiber and how fluffy it is at the end. I just made two minifee wigs and used about 1oz each (just under I think, I prepped about 1oz from a 2oz bag and ended up using just under the amount i prepped) for my Sircca and my Karsh, but for my Lishe I made a teeswater wig and prepped about 1oz and ended up using about half of it because of the curls from my particular batch of teeswater.

If you haven't tried making yarn wigs yet, I definitely suggest starting there or while waiting for your animal fiber because it really helps you learn to gauge the amount you need! I just eyeball my amount now when making/preparing and buy in 2oz amounts so I have at least enough to make an SD wig or experiment with if I plan to dye it.

    3. Generally, yes one ounce will give you enough fiber to cover a 7-8" head. But everything @Karra said.
how thick or thin the sections that go on the doll's head are will greatly effect how much you need.

Example: For this very smooth and fine-stranded goat mohair I ended up using the whole 1 ounce because I made my individual wefts a bit too thick. And this particular doll wears a 6-7" wig.

    4. This is so much good info, thank you!! I definitely plan to practice first by making yarn wigs, they'll just be straight since I'll be brushing them out and not curling them. Also... so my first practice runs aren't on nice animal fibers!

This is good to know, thank you! Also, your girl is so beautiful :aheartbea I love The Last Unicorn so much and your Amalthea is gorgeous!

    5. Length is also a factor. I've made a 9-10" wig using 1oz of mohair before. What I did is got some long mohair and cut it in half so it had double the surface area like a shorter fiber would have. Either way it is good to have some extra in the event that you need more than planned.

    6. This is a good point! I hadn't planned any short wigs yet so this hadn't occurred to me, but it definitely would have been a follow-up question I had at some point haha. Thank you!

    7. I hope nobody minds if I revive this thread.
I want to start making my first wigs, too. I decided to start by using wefts, since I imagined the handling to be easier for a beginner. They are usually not sold in weight but in length.
So, how much would I need for a 7-8 head? 1 meter (39,5in) is the smallest unit they sell. Is that enough? Or should I buy 1,5 meter (59in)? I have absolutely no idea how much I would need, so any help is appreciated.

    8. Thank you, very much!

      Hello!
I looked at a photo I had of an in process wig where the wefts were laid out on a ruler and 1 meter of prepared weft length might work for a 7/8 wig but 1.5 meters would give you some extra in case anything goes wrong, especially since shipping times are long and colors can vary a bit from batch to batch. To get an idea of how much to use on a specific size of head you could use embroidery floss as a visualization aid. Laying it out in a spiral on your wig capped doll's head would be a way to practice spacing and get a feel for the process before the fiber is sewn or glued down. Good luck and happy crafting!
