Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows how much will my cast shrink using silicon molds? I want to make a waste mold, and then a final mold before i send my doll to a casting company. So in total my doll will be molded 3 times and im aiming for my doll to be 63cm tall. I know I should make my doll bigger than my desired size but in not sure how much bigger.
It mainly depends on what silicone you use and what resin you use for the cast. What does it say in the product descriptions for the materials you are planning to use?
Im planning to use smooth-on's silicone and resin. It doesn't say a percentage of shrinkage, it only says minimal or low shrinkage. Im guessing ill have to cast my doll head and compare. I just thought there was a set percentage of shrinkage to expect for silicon molds in general.
Actually, the specifications for each product at Smooth-On are in the Technical Bulletins, which includes: Mixed Viscosity Specific Gravity Specific Volume Pot Life Cure Time Shore A Hardness Tensile Strength 100% Modulus Elongation at Break % Die B Tear Strength Shrinkage (in./in.) The above was found in the Technical Bulletin for Dragon Skin 10, 20, 30 Silicon Rubber. There are Technical Bulletins for each and every product. Smooth-On is a professional corporation. For example, there is a Technical Bulletin for Smooth-Cast 300 series of Urethane plastics, which includes: Pot Life Cure Time Tensile Strength Tensile Modulus Elongation at Break % Flexural Strength Flexural Modulus Compressive Strength Compressive Modulus Shrinkage (in./in.)
