As the title says - how many extra parts have you gotten your dolls (or how many did they come with)? What do you usually get? Heeled feet, extra heads, horns? Who in your collection has the most bits and how often do you swap them out?
Usually, none. I have one doll in my whole collection with high heel feet, and one pair of geta feet for another doll. I'm not into swapping parts and realistically just won't do it.
Some of my dolls have 2 sets of hands or feets. My one Latidoll has an extra head even. But I don't tend to do extra parts unless I know I will use them.
Hands. I have. So. Many. Hands. Mostly Volks, because I go nuts whenever there's order periods for them; you can't just buy them whenever you want to. However, I'm so lazy about changing them out. Still, I have them if I want them...
Usually, I have hands, but not many, perhaps an extra set of fists. I also have three Unoa faceplates (missing the winking face one) and I would love to get some extra hands for her too.
My favorite extra parts are my alternate heads, for at least six of my existing character dolls. I love changing their expressions. Three are sleep heads, one is a "romantic" head, one has "laughing" closed eyes, one has alternate kabuki makeup, and one is a grumpy face. I wish I had more of them! Linda S. galatia9
I love optional parts, but I only own one BJD with them. My FL Chic Line Rou was available with an optional sleeping face plate and a second set of hands. So, I got those for him. I have been a 1:6 scale action figure collector for a long time, probably way before I even discovered these dolls existed (back in the dark ages). So, I always wanted to own many optional parts for all my dolls. I probably rarely do much with 1:6 hands, because they are mostly a pain in the gut to switch out, but the FL CL ones are magnetic so they are easy to switch for photos. They are about the size of 1:6 hands so the magnets are not strong enough to have the doll holding much, unlike action figures. I still like having options, even if I don't do anything with them. I particularly love the optional sleeping plate and I always loved CP's hands, even got some pairs for my DZ mini years before I even contemplated owning a Fairyland doll. I wish they had made more opional parts for their CL, but sadly that will probably never be. At least more hand options would have been nice. I would have liked horns, wings, masks, a lot of random things I could hoard and do nothing with (because I am nuts!).(:
I have 2 pairs extra hands for all my dolls, heel feet for my girls, and a second (sleeping) head for all my human dolls! So like...a lot, I have them in a drawer in my doll space haha, except for the heads which I keep on headstands (whichever is not on the doll at the moment). I use them frequently. I'm trying to get into photography and it gives more options to have different heads/hands/feet.
I have an extra pair of feet for three of my dolls because I swapped all of them for heel feet. Also have an extra pair of hands for one of them. When I was new I thought I had to get jointed hands for all of them, but it turns out they are kind of a hassle so I'm glad I only got one pair. The extra parts are all sitting in their respective boxes, I don't use them. I got one of my dolls an extra pair of eyes, but I have yet to use them haha. I would also like to get some horns someday.
My Spirit Doll girls all have extra high-heeled lower legs with solid rather than jointed ankles. A couple of my Volks SD16 girls have those, too. Oscar has them along with several different pairs of extra hands. Some of my Soom guys have both hooved legs and normal ones, plus horns or masks. The Spirit Doll guys have... magnetic bits. Several of them each. My LatiDoll Largo probably wins the prize for having the most extra parts, though. He came with a spare head and hands, wings, a pretty wicked warhammer and a resin helmet/headdress... plus his outfit and jewelry, since he was a full-set.
My MSD girl has high-heel feet in her current body and my Yo-SD girl came with several pairs of hands and a pair of resin sneakers that I love to pieces. I always find it tiring having to swap those parts, so I don't usually use them much if the situation doesn't specifically require it (when seasons change, for example).
With my last arrival, I ordered all the extras which included three additional heads and an extra pair of hands! I intend to get even more parts for him, mainly dragon themed fantasy parts I already got some gorgeous horns, and have some ear parts on the way. I'd like to get him some jointed hands as well for general customization.
Right now all I have is one set of 4 pairs of hands in tea & cinnamon for my Smart Dolls to share. If you had asked me this question say 4 years ago, my Bishonen House Steve had around 20 face plates and 3 pairs of hands I could change finger positions on due to soft plastic when put in boiling water, then cold. My other two BH guys had around 6 each in face plates and 2 pairs of hands.
The most I have is for my Pukifee Ena full set, she has a sleeping faceplate, antlers, resin shoes, and extra hands. I usually only get one pair of extra hands, the extra hands that come with certain company dolls, or a sleeping faceplate but I found Ena second hand and was happy to have so many extra parts that I wouldn’t normally buy.
Ahhh I don't but I would LOVE to have extra hands for my Soony. That could be so cute to play around with.
Hm, my first doll with extra parts was Maskcat Doll Lisette. She came with a pair of loose fist-like hands and hee feet. I also ordered her extra ballet feet. I change her hands maybe a couple of times a year, but she always has a mix of the two sets of hands. So I use them both equally. I also love her heel feet and ballet feet. She hardly ever uses flat feet, maybe because I still haven't bought her proper flat shoes to wear. Before her, I was sure I didn't need any extra parts, but fists and heels are now must for my girls.
I get heeled feet when the option is there so i can buy heels. I buy extra hands too, but i don't know why i bother. I'm too lazy to change them.
If the default hands aren't good enough, I get a pair or two, usually in a holding gesture or more relaxed hands. I try to get every available part of the doll, although it gets expensive fast. If there's two horn types being offered with the doll, I want to get both and etc. I don't think I would ever get heeled feet for dolls though.
Most of my dolls don't have extras. Some have extra hands or feet. But Cooper has four heads: barefaced, casual makeup, heavier evening going out makeup and goth rockstar makeup.
LOVE OPTION HAND PARTS!! I have option hands for every doll that has any available and usually several sets (but at least fist hands and peace hands if not), I don't swap them super often but probably at least as often as I change their clothes (especially my YoSD). There are also some heel feet/legs I picked up but haven't gotten around to using (someday someday).
The dolls that I focus on the most did not come with any extra parts. I bought all their extra hands and feet separately and because all 5 dolls are from the same brand, I'm able to swap their extras.
For my Guard Love 1/6 doll, I got all the extra hands because they were very cheap (like maybe $5 each?). And I got the resin wig. For another doll I brought secondhand (don't remember the maker) they came with a resin wig, removable horns, and animal legs. I usually don't get extra parts unless I know I'll really really love the doll. ^-^
When I got CP Soo way back in 2006, I got her head first and body secondhand. They ended up not matching so I reordered her head in the correct color. My Luwen has his extra vampire head. When I bought Sally (Rap1993 Danni v2) this past June she came with both a normal and a sleeping faceplate, both flat and heel feet, resin shoes, four pairs of hands and her horns. I use almost all the spare parts for art references but the horns get zero use. Maybe I'll sell or trade the horns if anyone wants them.
Almost everyone in my crew has accumulated option parts. I try to buy them with the bodies. I'm all about option hands, I do swap them routinely for photos, and I've gone out of my way to hybrid hands to my dolls so they get more poses. OTOH I'm not fond of jointed hands even though one doll has them, I much prefer a well-sculpted static hand. I'm less interested in alt heads. I might consider a sleeping head if it was available, but I don't see myself using it much. I'm not interested in fantasy parts -- unless they're feathered wings, and those I usually buy separate from the doll. I use the wings only during photoshoots, they're not attached constantly to the doll. I've been growing this collection alongside my dolls, currently I have enough to give head wings to everyone and back wings to most of them. Spoiler: breakdown for my crew Syr (Dollstown body) - alternate hands, heeled feet, and my only doll with an alt head (sleepy/dreamy face). The alt hands/feet were made by Dollstown but for a taller doll, and unfortunately they aren't so suitable for her. I don't think I'll use the hands, but might use the heeled feet occasionally... if I can find shoes that fit... I haven't finished repainting her alt head so I haven't used it yet. I can imagine swapping heads for certain photos, but I'll still use her default open-eyed head the most. Justinian (Dollstown body) - Only doll without option parts. But his default hands are so versatile that I don't feel like he's lacking anything. Vallant (Doll Family-H body) - 2 pairs of hybrided hands. He wears one from each pair (so his hands have different poses), I sometimes swap sides, and I want to get him a third pair of hands. Anpiel (Dream Valley body) - 3 pairs of hybrided hands (currently on order, I'm keen). Gael (Vings body) - jointed hands and heeled feet. I swap out his hands and feet quite regularly. Oshidori (2DDoll body) - heeled feet, also swap her feet regularly. The dollmaker is currently sculpting option hands, and I plan to buy them when they're released.
Hands, hands, hands! I looooove having extra hands! I think at this moment I have 6+6 hands and 6 dolls. Most of them don't have extra hands (Aino, Pihla and Minka) because either I got them second hand (hehe) or additional hands weren't an option. Saga (DF-H 1/5 Xiao Chan) has the most spare parts in total, she has 3 extra pairs of hands and 3 extra feets. I bought Saga second hand and she came with all her feet and one additional pair of hands, and when DF-H announced the discontinuation of their 1/5 line I had to seize the day and get the extra hands. The feet rarely get used and usually just sit in the box, but the hands I do switch out regularly. My yet unnamed AE 26cm Freya has 2 extra hands and a second head, I ordered her that way and she also came with a second pair of feet (smaller for fitting into shoes, and bigger for a more natural and proportionate look without shoes). She is pretty much stuck with her fist hands because I think they're just so darn cute, and I don't have to worry about breaking any tiny fingers. So yeah, hands. Love 'em and if I can order some with the doll, I will other extras I'm less interested in. Optional heads- maybe, if I really like it/them. Optional feet- probably not, I'm plenty happy with the default flat feet since my dolls have at least socks on most of the time. Fantasy and other extra parts don't really fit with the general vibe I have going on for my dolls, so I don't even really consider those.
I will usually get extra hand and feet parts if available, and I'm able to afford it at the time. Theoretically I like the idea of having a sleeping face for my dolls, but I also recognize that I am infinitely more likely to just edit my pictures in post to look like they are sleeping, than I am to go through the effort of getting a second face painted, then changing to that face when I want those pictures.. (and I am even more likely to never take those hypothetical photos in the first place)
My Volks girl has heeled/flat feet so I can swap them out as well as some other hand parts! Eventually I'd like to get the same for my other dolls, I like having different options!
Not a fan of extra parts and I tend to avoid them completely. It's not even due to laziness - I just don't like having stuff lying around. The only exception is when a doll only comes with heeled feet or hands I dislike by default. Then I'll buy additional flat feet / hands for them.
Some of my dolls have wing extras, but Rafeyah actually has four horn sets! I love having extra parts, makes em feel ✨fancy✨
Made a thread and never answered myself! I like having spare parts in moderation - I don't like the idea of having too many because some things are a bit annoying to store and I don't like having floating heads but I do like having fist hands and heeled feet on occasion. Everything is a little bit mix-and-matchy with my crew so there is a lot of sharing and varying levels of resin match, especially as most of my dolls are sourced second-hand Something I'm now really kicking myself about is not getting heeled feet for everyone when there was a good time for it because having finally found a pair that works for several dolls I'd...l like to pose them in heels together. I'm also a bit mad at myself for not ordering more extra parts whenever getting a doll straight from the company because waiting for them to be cast after is incredibly annoying... yet multiple nibblets also rack the price up a lot so I'm not always tempted when there's ordering time. You live and learn haha!
I rarely buy extra parts, but admittedly, when I received my Solayli (SDM-F-37), I was pretty excited to order extra hand parts for her. She has three sets altogether. Usually I'm satisfied with just one pair of hands in a relaxed/neutral pose, but Solayli didn't come with relaxed hands, so buying the extra relaxed set was necessary for me. (The V hands were just for fun.) Since I bought those hands for her, when I take her out for photos, I make sure to bring her extra hands along to change up her poses. It's actually very fun! Otherwise, only two of my dolls have extra hands/feet, and those dolls came with them. My Muhan's Doll body came with open and clenched hands, and I'm always forgetting she has them, so they just sit in her doll box. My Sprouting Dragon body came with three pairs of feet and five pairs of hands!! I would have never ordered all those myself, but I don't mind having them. (The body isn't currently being used since I'm waiting for its head to come in. Time will tell if I use all those extra parts!) Beyond hands/feet, I also purchased a set of bunny ears+tail for my Qingxuan (SDF65 Maize). They've been used on and off (and not just by him!), and while I don't use them too often, I'm very happy to have them. I like bunnies, and getting to make a doll have bunny ears/tail on the fly is quite nice!
I'm still waiting for heel legs for Maria. I also have heel feet for my Limhwa doll, but not sure what company's hands might also fit her (a bit hard to dress, fingers get caught). I bought 2 extra heads for dolls without bodies.
For my crew, majority are extra hands while the rest are other resin attachments like horns, masks, etc.
I've only ever used the extra parts that come standard, like the high-heeled feet, and the only ones I've bought separately are the jointed hand parts. However, when I recently purchased a doll from FANFF, I bought the high-heeled feet and ballet feet because I think the look of a ballet foot is beautiful, and I couldn't pass them up. On a slightly off topic note, I'd love to see a pair of toe shoes that help the doll stand with ballet foot parts.
I love picking out extra hands! The issue is once I have a pair of expressive hands that suit the character I… I just won’t change them again I’m really bad at switching them back and forth unless they’re magnetic like FL (But even those… I have favorites that tend to stay with one doll ) I have quite a few extra feet too for girl dolls, but usually I’ll prefer a doll in either flats or heels (and I find heel legs are better at standing than heel feet) so I don’t switch the feet much at all either… The few different faceplates I have for dolls are all Faityland event sculpts that couldn’t be purchased separately from the regular sculpt. So, I have a regular Alan and a snarling Alan event head, but I really just use the snarling Alan head. Same with my Sirin sleeping face and Hwayu skull event head. When I get attached to how a doll looks, it’s hard to convince myself to switch things around
I don't usually order extra parts because switching hands or feet on S-hooks is a bit of a hassle. A few of my dolls came with them, and I do use them sometimes. Some of he Fairyland dolls, with the magnetic wrist and ankles, I have bought extra parts for. Morpheus, my blue Minifee Jiyu has the most extra parts, partly since I use the Soo Dark Elf A head he came with as his alternate head, and got him 3 extra pairs of hands. And since its easy to switch his hands, and even his head, I do change them fairly often.
I can't live without the option for heel and flat feet swapping for sure! If I had more money I'd have every available option hand too, but that's a work in progress for now. It's only really realistic with dolls that have easy-swap systems like mag-on or the vinyl DD peg system but I've gotten so used to it that I can't imagine not being able to swap hands/feet shape for pictures. I'd love to have alternate heads of the same sculpt with different expressions for one character but that's a tad expensive and maybe a pipe dream
When a BJD artist offers them, I always opt-in to order the additional hands and feet. This choice significantly enhances the posing and photography possibilities. If a doll comes with a sleeping face, I usually get the extra head. What's truly exciting for me is when a vampire doll is sold with the option of having a human, vampiric, and sleeping face. This opens up a world of fun scenarios, making the doll even more enjoyable to style and play with. I have a soft spot for the extreme pointe ballet foot, as it allows me to capture the beauty of movement. But I also appreciate the demi-pointe for heels and, of course, a more natural resting foot for a casual look. Each foot option adds a unique touch to the doll's poses, making the photography process even more realistic.
Most of my dolls don't have extra parts. I was very fond of jointed hands, but now I sometimes prefer differents sculpted hands rather than jointed hands. Jointed hands can be such a pain to manipulate while taking photos! So some of my dolls have extra hands. For female dolls, I like to have heel feet (most of the time) but they are not always available. And sometimes I buy an alternative head for a doll, but not often. I calculated and in the end 1/3 of my collection has extra parts. The luckiest is my Nyxdoll Katrina. She has an extra head, one extra pair of hands, and heel feet on top of flat feet.
I don't think I have any extras for the smaller than SD sized dolls, though I'm not sure if any of them even had any available. Most if not all of my SD girls have both regular and heel feet, and if extra hands have been available I've gotten those too. Both of the guys have default and jointed hands, but most of the girls have been less fortunate and didn't have any extra pairs available. The Supias had 1 extra set and I did get two pairs of those but frankly, they are so... odd / too unrealistic looking in my opinion that I've ended up never using them, so I never bothered getting any more of them despite later on getting more of the matching bodies. I don't currently have any extra heads for my dolls. I do sometimes wish I would have gotten the sleeping version as well for one of my dolls back before her resin color was discontinued, however, I am terrible at recreating faceups and like 99,9% certain it would bother me too much if all the faces of the same character wouldn't look exactly the same except in a different expression, so, chances are I would have ended up regretting it more if I had got it. That being said, I do now have a doll on order with two heads, but since one is human and the other beast I feel like I have a much better chance at making them look like the same person, weird enough? Though originally I did order both versions simply because I just couldn't make up my mind on which one to get, but as I've been waiting I've been toying with the idea of trying to go with both.
Candell has 9 parts in total (7 hands, 2 feet), and Mina has 10 (5 hands + jointed, 4 feet). I love extra parts and I always get them all - I'd make an exception for heel legs¸ since from what I understand they take a whole restring to get them on unless there's a hook under the heel. Hands add a lot of expression to poses and it's fun to switch them around. It's one thing I loved about 1/12 figures which always had a bunch out of the box - the other is faceplates but they're hard to get a hold of in BJDs. My Dollstown will have no extras but the arch of her feet is jointed, and I might get jointed hands for her from another company (I do wish there were more options for female jointed hands). I think jointed hands have their place but a bunch of sculpted hands + jointed for more subtle poses is ideal.
Short answer: Way too many! Considering how rarely I use them. I have a few sets of extra hands feet. Usually I settle on a set I like and leave them in place, but I don't sell the extras. I do have about half a dozen extra wings for my 1 lonely Yotenshi Yuh in all the colors. That was a deliberate collecting endeavor and they get used more than the other parts do.
Mostly extra hands. Some dolls come with and extra set, or get bonus jointed hands, so I have a tiny drawer of hands. I also have those extra parts that come off Doll Chateau dolls. I removed the extra joints on mine. I don't do heeled feet, so into the tiny drawer with those as well.
I recently ordered a doll with 3 mouth parts you can swap between. The original version of the doll also had magnetic ears. I got extra jointed hands for him, so he’ll have 2 sets of hands, 3 mouth pieces, and 5 extra bits.
I have extra heads and hands for my Minifees. They kind of all share the parts though. It’s why most are the same skin tone. My Alicia is the only one who has extra hands all to herself.
I technically have an extra bust piece laying around, but that's because i needed a smaller one than what the body came with, I don't regularly change them out or anything. I'd like to get some extra hands for at least one (on-topic) doll some day, but I don't have any yet.
Took me a while to decide to mod 3 pairs that didn't fit, but Candell is now the winner with 2 extra pairs of feet (high-heel, ballet), and a whopping 12 pairs of extra hands. That's 32 swappable parts in total I'll eventually spoil everyone just the same.
most of my girls have the extra heel feet. one of them has flat feet, heel feet, and heel legs. 5 of my dolls have extra hands for different positions. one of them has 2 spare pairs of hands and heel feet in addition to her default hands and flat feet. i do actually use the extra hands and feet; i change the feet especially whenever an outfit change calls for a different pair of shoes that don't go on whatever feet the doll is wearing. i don't have any extra heads tho--- the closest i come to that is my Unoa Sist hybrid girl. she has two faceplates (regular and bully) and i wouldn't mind collecting a couple more of the Sist faces. i would continue painting them all with the same makeup style tho, so it always looked like the same doll with the same faceup making different expressions.
Most of the time I don't order extra parts for my dolls (not counting the extra bits my bigger boys came with ) but for the dolls of my dnd character i got heel feet for her and jointed hands for both her and her friend. They're my babies, so they're the only ones I really plan on specifically ordering extras for.
