Right now I have 11, with one floating head whose body has been ordered. I'm pretty content with this number! I don't get that string NEED urge for beautiful sculpts anymore, and I can now focus all my doll guns on perfecting their customizations.
Before I had any dolls, I always knew I wanted only one. Actually before I seriously started researching the hobby, I was under the impression most people only had one or two dolls (especially since they're so expensive). It really amazed me when I saw the large collections people have! Now I have my doll and I still stand by my one doll policy. I would be too overwhelmed by a large collection. If I ever did get another doll, it'd probably be a cocoriang peppi or some other off topic animal like doll to act as a pet for my current doll but I have no desire to get another human/human-like doll. Currently I am content and not planning on purchasing another doll any time soon but who knows what the future holds for me.
I thought I'd be satisfied with one, then two, and the most I've had is 5 at a time. I do feel like the more I have the harder it is to get clothes for all of them and give them equal care. But I love my dolls
My limit is my cabinet space Once there's no room for dolls anymore I can't buy more of them. I currently have 6 and my cabinet has room for 8 so after that I'm good. But seriously I'd say it's certainly enough when none of them is totally forgotten. Equal care isn't realistic since I have favorites, but if I just kinda forget some exist then I have too many.
Depends on how much shelf space in available. To me, 40 of all sizes, feels like enough. I only have so much free time to photograph them and for them to inspire my writing. The more I have the more over whelping it gets
I started with one doll. That rapidly increased to 8 So far I adore each of them dearly, including one MAD I tried to sell and later got attached. But I still miss the idea of having only one (or two) bjd. I also have Barbie Chelsea for one of my doll. One non-bjd fox and awaiting for one bjd baby Capybara. No one warmed me dolls themselves won’t be end of it even if you’re done adding doll to collection I still have an urge to let someone go because I feel like I have too many for myself but not sure who or when.
For now, my three is more than enough with all the customization work I'd like to do on them along with clothes buying I feel like some new released or LE release could change my mind pretty easily, though.
i have 11 full dolls and 7 floating heads with a possible other one on the way bdvcvvcb idk when ill stop as running out of room hasnt slowed me down just forced me to get more creative with placement
My rule is if I ever get to the point where can't display more for lack of room then I can't buy any more dolls. Mind you I am VERY good at making space for new dolls and it's not happened yet. :P
Right now I'm only willing to buy a doll if I have a specific wardrobe mapped out for her beforehand. I currently have 3 wardrobes all planned out (1950's, 1970's, Nutcracker ballet), and I'm working on two more (1890's, 1920's). So theoretically that caps me at 5? But one doll could share multiple wardrobes, so I might end up with even fewer...
My limit was 12 and I now have about 25 in my collection. I want to downsize a bit but I’m at the point where I feel like I am quite happy with my dolls that I have and I don’t feel the need for more like I did when I was first in the hobby. I think when you start in the hobby you can get excited and overwhelmed by the amount of choices that are available but you will slowly learn what you like vs what you don’t and build your collection around that. But yeah sometimes I still get the want feeling
I go less off of how many, and more off of oc's I love the most. From the looks of it my collection will stop at 9-10 (+ floating heads for alternative expressions.) It makes things a lot more exiting for me if I really care a lot about the characters the dolls are based on.
i dont remember whatever i said in the past but now that i collect msd and not only tiny dolls it is changed. limit 8 msd!! im already at 6 less than a year into them. yike
I have 10 right now . . . and I've only been in the hobby for a little over a year lmfao. There are two (maybe three) that I got early on and am planning to sell, though, so that'll trim it down a bit. I'd like to keep my collection relatively small. I've obtained all of my current grails at this point, so I'm not planning on buying any more super soon! I just wanted to get my nasty hands on all the ones I just HAD to have. Now that I've done so, I can focus on getting/making more clothes and accessories for them, settling on their individual looks. Might get some little furniture for them and whatnot . . . generally work on my doll photography! I KNOW I'll come across more dolls that I'll absolutely fall in love with in the future, too! But I'd really like to keep my collection in the 10–15 range ideally! . . . [smash cut to me with like 30 dolls a year from now]
I set myself a limit of 4 and now have 5, which definitely feels more than enough for me. It's actually beginning to get a little overwhelming to get everyone enough clothes and accessories! In a perfect world where I'd have tons of space, I might expand into having a few 1/3 dolls in addition to my 1/4 crew but as it stands right now, this will be a long way down the road. But under 10 in total, certainly!
Updating my reply, a bit more than a year later... I have 7 dolls at home currently + two more in production -- total 9 dolls, and I feel that I've reached a "enough, for now" threshold. In fact, I'm planning to cull one doll from the collection, and am wondering if another one might go later. My "enough" limit is absolutely a mental one... I make characters for all my dolls, and right now my head is full of those 8 characters (sans the one who'll be culled). Any more characters feels overwhelming to think about right now -- which has the side benefit of making me not want to buy new dolls either. Who knows, maybe I'll make room in my head later and then the collection will grow again. But right now, I have enough resin and I'd love to keep my collection in the single digits!
I haven't set a limit for myself yet--my collection is currently at 7 (on-topic) dolls with 2 more on the way. I figure I'll need to set some kind of limit eventually, but for the time being I'm having fun exploring different sculpts and finding dolls I enjoy.
I originally thought one would be enough. I couldn't have been more wrong... I currently have 9 dolls (8 SDs), 1 floating head and 1 head on the waitlist. My limit has been at 21 dolls since my story began.
It feels like setting a limit on myself has just sort of guaranteed I'll blow right past it. I originally thought I'd never want more than 5, then told myself no more than 10. I decided to just not set a limit after that and sure enough I've managed to stay under 20. I do think too many more would start to feel over whelming to me. I think if I did more with them day to day I'd want to keep a smaller number. I guess the one hard limit I've found is I want to be able to display all of my dolls. If I can't display them I don't really want to get more until I've found a new spot for them to live which did stop me from really buying any dolls in a few years ago.
It's sad when you have to go to your profile and actually count them, because you're not sure. Currently 42 of various sizes and I really think I'm done shelling characters, it's just tweaking and polishing from now on. Quite possible I'll refine things down a bit, but it's also possible I might find a grail or other doll I can't live without to join the horde.
I don't have much space so I think the maximum for me would be 5 full dolls. I have 2 SDs and 1 YOSD at the moment, so far it's just been buying a better-suited head for my character.
I probably reached my dorrie limit now with three 60+cm dolls in my crew, along with two msd's and one yosd.
With the dragon and head I have coming, that'll take me to 8 dolls, plus 2 floating heads. (One stunt head for testing techniques, one kept in storage as the new head is a replacement.) After the dragon arrives, I think at most I'll get one or two more. Focusing in on my dolls' worldbuilding seems to be a big help in keeping my collecting focused.
well I have too many and need to minimize but in my view for me it would be max 2 small shelves in my room that means less than 10 about between 5 - 10 dolls
I have only one bjd in my possession, however I have 3 coming soon hopefully. I think after I get the other 3 in I will stop ordering so many because of space constraints.
I have been in this hobby (actively buying bjds) since 2008 and have 12 dolls and 1 head right now. Going by this thread, it looks like I have a large-ish collection comparatively (maybe?). I don’t really set a hard limit - I guess I go by how I feel? My oldest doll, a Custom House Ange Ai Uri, is still one of my favorite dolls (and so yellowed), and I take her out on a semi-regular basis. I tend to come in and out of this hobby and buy dolls in spurts. I just bought 4 dolls since 2023 , but before that my last doll purchase was in 2015. I’ve also sold many dolls, and foresee myself selling dolls again in the future. Still enjoying it all!
I have so many dolls now that I have to stop and count them! 16, including a few off-topic BJDs and floating heads that I own. I do sometimes think how much I could have spoilt one or two dolls with the money I spent on the rest of them. It's a nice idea to have one or two dolls with loads of clothes and accessories. But I'm really attatched to my entire collection now and I don't think I could part with any of them unless I was in a really bad financial emergency. I have told myself no more new dolls now unless it's a body for my floating heads or an old Dollzone MSD sculpt (I love them so much and it's rare to see them nowadays).
I don’t think I could limit myself but I’m definitely slowing down, I think I have a good sized collection now and I’m only really focused on getting my grails and curating stuff for the dolls I already have.
Hello everyone In the beginning I thought I'd be satisfied with one girl. But she was so beautiful.., so I got second. Now I have 8 Bjd dolls, different size, but only girls. And now I need couple boys in my collection. So probably in the end of this year will be 10 dolls. But I'd really like to keep my collection in the 10–15 range ideally!
I don’t have a set limit at the moment, but I’ll probably order dolls less often once my collection grows bigger.
Seeing as I favour dolls in the 1/3 range, I am willing to spend quite a lot on just one doll... But racking up a lot of dolls will amount to more money spent. I won't say I'm satisfied with my current line-up of three dolls, but I hope I do not come to surpass more than 10. Maybe 5-7 would be nice.
The right amount of doll is D&D party size, so five: mage, fighter, cleric, thief, and that one who just tags along and never talks.
I don't think I'd ever set a hard limit, my space dictates how many dolls I can have. Personally, I could not imagine having more than 10-15 at most. All of my u-noas share their bodies so at the moment I don't particularly have very many full dolls anyway so I feel pretty good. I've got a head and a small 1/6 scale on order so I'd like to prioritize more clothes in the upcoming year.
I think as long as you have a way to display/store them all, there shouldn’t be a hard limit on how many but as of right now I have 5 full dolls in my shelf.
Does that technically make dolls you pass onto someone else into deceased party members? Much to think about...
No limit, but... I have decided I have enough of the little dolls, the 1/4 and smaller ones. I will get exactly one more msd boy, I don't know when but I have wig, outfit, and shoes for one. It won't be anytime soon. I have been concentrating on the larger dolls 58cm-75cm range. I've been good this year about making a list and sticking to it. At this time I am only buying dolls for my webcomic series characters. I am sure though, when that list is filled, I will find more dolls and more reasons to write them into the story. As far as the smaller dolls, I know they are cute and tempting but all I have to do is look up at my full shelves and tell myself that I just don't need this doll. I am almost out of shelf room anyways. Although if the doll comes in a larger size...
I say for me 5 is enough. Actually I'm constantly considering selling one but I don't have the COA and box with me. (actually that's the original plan when I went abroad for study) but now I am tempted by dodollsdream and I rarely take photos of her. And with a ddd, I would have two dolls of the same colour.....I prefer more variety
I’m trying to stay between 3-7 big main dolls, and infinite tinies, because, well, tiny. I don’t want anyone to get left out, and more than that just seems like a lot for me!
I was going to say I'm trying to stay below 100, but I will probably not... I said the same thing when I had 20, 30, etc. so it's probably an illusion to think I'll stop at any point. I pity whoever inherits the mess that is my craft/hobby/doll room.
I'm just going until things feel "right" to me. I'm looking at having 10 resin dolls total, not including my two pet dolls (whether or not they will stay is currently up in the air), and then that'll probably be more than enough resin for my household. I currently have 9 either incoming or in some stage of completion, so I've got plenty of projects on my hands! My vinyl dolls, on the other hand, occupy a different niche in my brain and I consider them a separate collection on a personal level. I may end up accumulating more of them because I find them less energy intensive on my creative streak.
Right now I have two floating heads and 14 full dolls, with all but one being 1/3 scale. One is kept in his box for reasons, and the other twelve are clustered together on a single book case shelf in my office/studio. With all that said, I don’t have a maximum or goal number of dolls. Currently we’re tight on space so I’m not actively looking… but if I were to see a doll I want and the funds were there I would get it. Really it’s the boxes I going to be the biggest issue as they take up quite a bit of room.
Personally, I'll stop when I have all of the sculpts or dolls from artists that I like. I've realized that limiting it by a number is just not realistic to limit myself to a certain number or size. I more focus on getting the dolls I am interested in and want, I'll stop when I have them or if I can't for financial or space reasons. Does that mean I might end up with thirty to a hundred different dolls, maybe, do I care though, not really. There is also the fact that I collect dolls that aren't BJDs and also plushies. I don't judge people that have an entire room filled with dolls but I do know that that more than likely will not be me.
Hm... I have no limit for this. Maybe because I thought that one doll was enough for me and now... I have 6 dolls and 2 heads
I have to update less than 10 for space reasons but it might even be 0 for me , cause I don't want to have anything expensive to sell and I don't really want to bother with hobbies anymore, I have already sold some, shipped some to layaway arranged others to layaway and get ready to upload others for selling but I am already counting the ones which stay at 8 , I have to photo and sell out the spare parts of course but even with those 8 dolls I separated for staying I feel I want none ,as before I felt with music and sold every cd and now years later I am happy to put music out of my life I think one day I will be happy to have put dolls out of my life it needs just to understand that at the end of the day I am a mainstream soul which doesn't need anything creative in life and I am far happier with a pizza a beer and tv.
For me 5 is a comfortable number, but I collect all sizes so 5 of each size... I desperately wanted to be a minimalist girlie and keep the overall collection under two digits but I cant
At the moment I have 17 full dolls, most of them SD-size, 7 anthros and some floating heads. To be honest, I already feel quite overwhelmed and I am thinking constantly about selling some of them. The lack of clothing and wigs are not the problem, I have really more than enough to choose from. And in my doll cabinet, there is still space for some more. But with the little time which is left for my hobbies beside a fulltime job, family life and the daily little (or big) problems, I can‘t care for every doll I have. So some of them are sitting in their closet for months (or now even years) before I do something with them again. So I would say for me 10 to 15 dolls are enough.
For me as I get back into the hobby, the plan is around 5-6 dolls. I want to be able to comfortably display them and work on each of their details myself, from faceups to clothing. Five are for my general ideas I'd like to make real one day, and one for the "doll that is a must buy because I will never see anything like it again!!". That said who knows where this will end up...
So, I don’t want to alarm you or anything, but there was a point at which my goal was only 10 of them. I had picked which characters were important enough to get shelled as dolls. At last count, we are over 50 dolls in the house. Well over 50. I’ve given up on a population limit when companies keep coming out with dolls I want to write characters about. Earlier in the year, I thought I was “almost” done buying dolls. I had a very short list of bodies for my floating heads, and a couple full dolls, and then Dollzone had to come out with both a snake girl, and an Angel in the same month, and I had characters for both of them. Now I’m accepting that I can get “done” shelling all the characters I have on the list, but it’s unlikely I’ll ever be fully done bringing home dolls.
@Chameleon Sounds amazing, there is nothing wrong with that! If you have the space and means to have a large doll family, all is well! Most my characters stay in drawn form and I have nearly a thousand there- I just need to slow myself down by setting a limit or else I would probably buy too much on a whim haha. As is, I think the fact that I want the dolls to look somewhat coherent/mesh well is going to make it harder for me to buy a lot just because I prefer the smaller head/mature-ish MSDs and they are a bit harder to find ;U; (or so I hope..)
There's no hard or fast number that's 'enough', it's definitely more of a feeling, or a vibe. Space becomes an issue at high numbers, but I've always enjoyed a maximalist aesthetic, and feel most at peace with organized clutter. I'm currently sitting at over 100, and feel that I'd like to downsize a bit just so that everyone has a bit of breathing room. I'd say 80-90 is probably ideal for me, give or take. And I'm saying that as someone who has mostly SD sized dolls. If everyone has a place to sit or stand and be seen and there are no gaps or open spaces...that is enough for me. Whatever that number is.
Too many. I initially wanted 'only' 26 dolls. Then the limit was set at 50. Now I'm above 60 and I feel like that's a bit to many, but I don't know who else I'd be willing to part with to get back under 50. Anyway, I'm at the limit in terms of space ^^'
Well, don’t feel bad…it looks like we’re both in exactly the same place in our collections. I’m at 61, and combatting my lack of space now by trying to stop buying any more. Who knows how successful I’ll be?
To be realistic, I guess I'll only stop when I've owned all the sculpts I'm interested in. That's a lot, I'd say, but I'm highly positive that I won't keep all (not even most) of them in the end. Then again, who knows how many of the new releases will be of interest to me? Space is an issue as well, of course. So basically there's no hard set limit or goal. At the moment.
Thank you for comforting me! I need to stop buying, or at least I need to sell before buying again XD It's just now I think they are a little to many for me. 50 was a good number. But like I said, I don't really know who I'd be ok to sell.
Update, 0 for me cause I am not really a crafting/creative person or hobby person. I don't know if I really can reply in those threads as my opinion is somewhat irrelevant as I am on my way to be out of the hobby lol
