This is a temporary thread to help us gauge interest in an upcoming feature. For the purposes of this poll: • Only count on-topic BJDs. • Count any full dolls that you own. • Count dolls-in-progress if you are serious about finishing them. • If you have a box of random heads in the closet or bodies stashed under your bed, those don't count.* * Please never quote this sentence out of context.
Nine years ago, on another BJD chat board, we had a periodic thread about how many dolls did we have now (confession being good for the soul). We counted floating heads as half a doll -- but I can't recall if we did the same for floating bodies.
Fifteen and a head that may or may not ever get a body, I'm undecided. I always think 13 is the perfect number, and I'd like to cut back to it, but every time I do, I fall in love with another I just have to have, so maybe somewhere between 15-18 is actually best for me?
brb laughing my ass off As for me -- seven. I'll never own more than ten. Arbitrary limit that I've never broken.
72 (too many, in other words) and another 2 on their way. The only thing a few of them are missing is a name - other than that they're definitely complete...
I think by the qualifications given, I have 35? 34 home, 3 incoming by (hopefully) the end of the week for 37, but three are OT companion animals, so back down to 34, but I have one floating head for sure who is going to get completed whenever I can find the perfect body for her, so 35. Maybe more when I see the event heads coming with the new order. But the count's sitting right in that 31-40 range as it bounces back and forth, so my vote went there.
Well poo! I just counted them up and found I have over 50 of the buggers!!!! How did that happen? 52 plus a head I don't want (came with a body I do want). Until I counted them I was thinking there were around 40 of them. Teddy
@Teddy, that's kind of how I feel every time I count them up. I've only recently come to accept 34 (well until the end of the week anyway); I was sure for the longest time I had about 28. Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not entirely sure 34 full dolls (including the OTs) is accurate, either... just recounted to be sure. And that's not counting the one head that's not getting a body, the one that is, the spare heads for the FL dolls, or the incoming event heads (at least one of which is probably getting a body soon). I will probably go through the same thing when (not if, I'm resigned to when) I cross the 50 line, too.
Too damn many! Sometimes I think about downsizing but... I probably only feel that way because they're all crammed in a cabinet. If I get another cabinet I'll probably want even more dolls to fill it up with XD
How the hell did I end up with so many dolls?? I swear, they sneak in when I'm not looking. I always think, "I'm done, my doll family is complete, no more dolls for me!" and then another one shows up. When it's time to cull the herd I have a hard time letting go, and it's kind of a hassle to sell them anyway, so they get boxed up & stashed away. But they're still around, silently judging me from the confines of their boxes. I have no resolve what so ever!
I've currently got nine. With another head on layaway that I haven't counted, since it will take a while before it will get a body.
do you need an exact number or just by your poll grouping? i have well over 50, counting all the ones that have bodies and faces though not necessarily eyes and wigs yet, and not counting any of the ones that are in the "box of doom" (ie getting prepared to be rehomed.)
I currently have 18 full dolls with plans for one more. After that, I can't see myself getting any more dolls unless something really special comes along.
Two, but I only just got my first one this year so I think that's pretty good, haha. The second one is trapped in the postal system limbo but should be freed from it in a day or two. Both are in progress but I'm serious about finishing them. If I could afford to I would have gotten several others already, but as I can't, those will have to wait until... Someday, who knows when.
I officially got my first doll in 2010 and now I have 5 and one on the way. I think I will be truly complete at 7 but dang it I want pipos Baha i guess make it 7. but i can really feel the pain about a new doll coming out and wanting it. *stares at volks creamy mami*
I have 5 full dolls, 2 more full dolls on the way within the next month, two heads that I fully intend to finish, which makes 9, plus a head I'm not sure what I'm going to do with because I haven't seen it in person, so I'm not counting it. So that's 9.
It got me counting and checking actually. Including the one that my father has lost the head to (that I can't replace, grr), I have 34. How on earth did I get that many ^^; (means my sig is incorrect now, oops)
I'm looking at the "over 50" votes with envy ...you guys are god I have 15 complete BJDs (all with face ups, clothes, wigs etc) and 1 floating head I'm trying to sell. Then I have 3 Dollfie Dreams (one is a DD/obitsu hybrid ) And 14 off topic dolls.
I have 5, plus 2 floating heads that I forgot about until after i voted. XD But leaving my vote at 5, because I'm still undecided about 1 head and I have no idea when the other will get a body...
I have 2 full dolls and like 2 floating heads but haven't decided to keep them and be creative or let some one else have them and be creative.
I currently have eleven. I was embarrassed to admit it, but got over it. It will be interesting to see how many I have by next year at this time!
Obediently discounting all spare parts, I have seven dolls right now, which still shocks me as a raw number -- did I plan to end up with that many going in?! -- but actually averages out to the less intimidating sum of one new doll a year. My, they do take up space, though. I feel like my collection will eventually max out in the low to mid teens; I'd feel overwhelmed by sheer cubic volume if I had twenty or fifty dolls! .....then again, I would have said that about having seven dolls in 2008.
I have 3 dolls I intend to keep, and one I just bought and is waiting for, and then one I intend to spruce up and sell someday, so that makes 5 full dolls. Oh, and then one floating head. I've switched out a lot of dolls over the years tho, so I've owned around 15 or so total. Still not too bad, not that I'm done by a long shot xD I'd like to have 50 or so, but I have no idea what I'd do with all of them xD
I mostly do this: This is the corner of our living-room known as the "Dolly Drift". This picture is quite out of date and, of course, there's more than just the BJD's there, but it's where the biggest grouping of dolls in the house reside. Teddy
That is pretty awesome! Right now my dolls occupy one level of this glass cabinet i have, and they cannot stand or sit on chairs or anything. I'd love to have even just one whole shelf of your size... Although I think I'd have to build it on my own.
To be fair, I only have a total of 15 complete MSD and SD combined but well over 100 tinies....it's a sickness I tell you and I've been "done" for the last 2 years but never have troubles adding a few here or there!
that's an awesome picture teddy! i hate to admit it, but my dolls are scattered all over the house and the only way i can figure out how many i have is to count up what i have listed in my profile it helps that most of mine are tinies and vast majority are under 7" so they don't actually take up that much room.... not really...
Ten of mine are Banjis, PukiPuki and PukiFee, destined to share my dollshouse castle (if I ever get it finished, so they'll take up quite a lot of space once their home is built. The Lusion is the biggest of the others, and I had to have a dolly clear-out before my fiance would let me order a doll that big (21 dolls, mostly porcelain and vinyl play dolls I hadn't done anything with for years), but I have 15 SD sized, and 8 MSD sized, and they do take up space, despite how tightly I've packed them in together. Teddy
mine all want houses or at least room boxes eventually. the ones for the pukifee and smaller won't be too bad space wise. its the msd/littlefee house that has me scrambling to figure out where on earth i can fit it in!
I have 3 msds and 4 SDs. I also have 2 SD heads that share a body with one of the complete SDs - they will be getting their own bodies eventually but I use them enough to be fully considered part of my collection.
i think this is my fate. i think even after i finish my characters I am going to just keep collecting pipos tinies forever
For those of you with many dolls, I have a question about maintenance. How often do you wind up changing their outfits or wigs? Do you store your dolls naked in their boxes? Do you have concerns about staining from clothes, accessories or wigs?
@Snips&Snails, I don't change outfits frequently, just whenever I feel the whim to change up what someone's wearing (often a result of finding something new for them, or wanting a specific outfit fit a photoshoot). Wigs only get changed when I get their "permanent"wig in, though sometimes I'll shuffle temp wigs due to new arrivals. They all stay on display on shelves all the time, never in their boxes unless I'm moving, and I'm not too fussed about strains, they can be removed. Nothing's really stained anyone in the whole time I've had my dolls, anyway.
the only dolls that are naked are the ones that i am still working on (ie need to finish the face/wigs/clothes because they are an odd size) i have never had a problem with staining, at least not permanently. i have had the occasional mark but it washed off. i tend to be reasonably careful not to put dark stuff on my dolls unless it has been pre-washed, or they have something underneath. all my dolls are out on display somewhere and the boxes are stored in the basement. as for changing the outfits? it depends on the doll and how many that one has. some have only one or two so don't get changed often. others may changed more frequently if the pictures i taking of them warrant it, but i don't really worry about it. i used to change the wigs on my doll when i only had one. but now i find that most of mine seem to work better with just the wig they pick after a faceup. so they (mostly) only get a new one if they get a new faceup or their wig starts to look worn out or ratty. that's just what works for me though
All my completed dolls are on display and are dressed. I have a few out for faceup so they are in their boxes waiting. I have a hobby room at my house and the dolls are temperature controlled and get little to no exposure to light. Most of my dolls have permanent wigs (just a few haven't settled on a "look") so they rarely change wigs. Outfits, I tend to change depending upon my moods and the seasons and if there's an upcoming meetup may be a very good motivator as well. Right now everyone needs a change as they need winter clothes on and everyone has summer clothes on. I have not had any issues with clothes staining but I have had a black wig slightly stain a doll. As long as it remains hidden, especially if it's their permanent wig, it doesn't bother me.
How often I change outfits depends on the individual doll... A few of them (Sjhan, for instance-) have "one true outfit" that suits them so well that's all they ever wear. Others (like Amber-) I switch between three or four different outfits, only changing them a few times a year. The majority of the crew have their outfits changed about once a month. A few seem to end up in something different pretty much every time I look at them, so... much, much more often than the others. I do check them all pretty regularly for staining, no matter how often (or not-) their outfits are changed. It's just part of my routine care-taking. I don't change wigs as a general rule. Most of my crew have one wig they stick with all the time, and no one is naked or stored in their box. I have a set of matching display cabinets that I keep the crew in.
I'm up to 6 at the present, though soon it shall be 7...! I'm a bit impressed with myself with the amount I have given my income and the amount of time I've actively been in the hobby~ I hope I can continue to steadily add to that number in the years to come too ♥
I have just 1 with the hopes of adding a second sometime in the new year :3 so just 1. *bes a n00b* lol
Outfits change fairly often (no point in cluttering up the spare-bedroom shelving with crates full of clothes if the dolls don't get to wear them), with the seasons, for meets, or for special occasions etc. Wigs, not so often. Once I find their look that wig is pretty much their default, unless they need a different style for a special occasion (in which case changing the wig is the equivalent of a trip to the hairdressers..{grin}) None of my dolls get stored. If they're put away in a box, i might as well not have them, so they're out and ready to be picked up and played with at any moment. Some of them spend time naked or in undies when I'm working on clothes for them and need them for fittings (in which case they live in the sewing-room and tend to remain in whatever state of dress-or-undress they're in when I run out of sewing time until I pick up the project again) but, for the most part they're dressed and wigged all the time. I've had one instance of staining (from a pair of purple velvet britches I made for my first BJD) but it cleaned off easily enough and I learned he needs to wear tights rather than stockings with those britches - problem solved. Some (but very few) of my dolls have wig staining in the areas around where the edges of the wig cap sits, as most of them war silicon wig-caps under the wigs anyway. But it doesn't bother me as it's all under the wig anyway - I can clean it off it I want to, but why bother if it's only seen when the wig is removed? Teddy
I only counted the 5 I currently have, not the 2 I have on layaway. I have plans for way more, the next time we do this pole I hope I have at least 10!
I have 40 including the babies (1/12), tinies, MSDs & SDs/70cm/Iplehouse ones. I keep them out, I change their outfits a lot (cause I do photo shoots for one, & I get bored looking at the same outfits for another) & NOBODY has a 'permanent' wig LOL except Dr. Ang (kinda) cause I only have the one grey one for him (cause he's old). Nobody's naked either.... UPDATE - 42 now
I have only one doll, and I don't have plans to buy more in next few years or so. I have few I like, but I have barely enough money to cover living and school cost, so I haven't let myself to get too attached to them.
I have 11! My fiance keeps hinting at surprising me with my very first ever tiny sometime next year though which I'm afraid will open a whole new can of worms-can't have just one, they'll need a partner! He's also been encouraging me to expand my mini crew too which leaves me with mixed feelings. On the one hand I WOULD like to add some girls in that size since I only have two boys, but on the other hand I'm not sure if it's my favorite size in the first...but I'm not sure if that's mostly because one of them is so delicate that I dare not risk touching him for fear of ruining him. Hmmm...
I recall counting 20 at the beginning of this year, not including floating heads, but somehow 4 more full dolls have mysteriously materialized in my apartment. Hmm...I think they're multiplying on their own somehow... Normally, I change their clothes once a season, but I find these days that half of them stay in summer clothes well into winter. Not that they can really feel cold, so I figure it doesn't matter that much. I will sometimes change their clothes when I get a new outfit I want to try on. Most of mine have one standard wig that's permanent. I have one or two who do sometimes change their styles, but even those wigs are designated only for them. I really only experiment when I get a new doll who I haven't decided on the final look for. Most of my crew wear wig caps just to keep the wigs on their heads, but they do double as protection from staining. My dolls are always dressed, and always on display. I figure there's no point in having them if I can't look at them. Especially in times (like recently) when I don't have a ton of time to actually do anything with them other than look at them. I don't have too many issues with staining, not even with the vinyl dolls. For some reason I've had incredible luck with the Obitsus and my new DD has been wearing mostly light colours until I get her a body stocking. A wig I had on her for literally two days stained her head *grr*, so I learned pretty quickly that I can't do long-term dark colours with DDs. Most staining with the resins comes off pretty easily with Magic Eraser.
There are now five at home and with one separate body and another separate head on the way. Can never find the right wigs and shoes for them all. Shoes are the most difficult to hunt for. But I feel much better about the number I have at home now ^^. They've only managed to conquer half of my wardrobe -_-, and I've managed to keep the number under 10... so far ^^'. Under 10 is just a small collecting addiction, happily I'm not yet a hoarder ^^', but I do worry about the future of my wardrobe space : /.
I have, in-house, 33 full dolls (+ 1 OT doll). I also have one that is in production and expect to see maybe... early 2016 *crosses fingers*? Additionally, I have a head that will be getting a body, but it may be more than a year before that happens as I've exhausted all doll funds right now and am saving for a trip.
I have a Soom Teenie Gem, a couple of those OT dolls that look like Pocket Fairies (you know the ones), and apparently a Pukifee is on its way as a gift. However, I have enough non-BJDs (especially Monster High, why did I get so many Monster High?!) that Hubby gets testy when I even think about getting another doll of any kind.
