Sewing How easy is it to take in shirts?

Aug 30, 2022

    1. I have an MSD doll incoming, and he was an in stock purchase so I'm wholly unprepared for his arrival. So I've been clothes shopping.

The problem is, the outfit I've fallen in love with is SD size. ACBJD just lists general "this is what will normally fit in this size" so I don't know if their size chart is wholly accurate and would be basically 5cm too big at every pertinent measurement. The outfit is a fitted shirt, jacket, and some pants.

The pants don't matter as much, they're baggy and draw string so extra space at the waist wouldn't be an issue. But the shirt and the jacket would require adjustments.

I obviously wouldn't have a pattern or anything to go off of, and I haven't made my own before. I have a sewing machine and I'm also fairly confident at hand sewing, but I haven't done anything clothes related in a very long time (think like...twenty years?? And it was people sized)

Is this something I should even be considering? Or is it going to be painful and make me cry and I should look for second-best? XD

    2. I feel-- maybe, for something like a fitted shirt and jacket that's gonna be a big pain.
you might want to consider your other options o-o'.

    3. Hello, congrats on the new dollie.

Try contacting ACBJD directly and ask them if they can provide the small size. They have a pretty awesome service where if you list the doll brand with their measurements, they can make the outfit to fit that specific model. I've ordered several pieces over the years, and always included that info in the Note Box when purchasing. And they all came in exactly as I wanted.

The only exception I did on purpose was ordering a purple denim jacket in SD size and no other info because I wanted that one to be baggy and slightly oversized. Came just as I hoped :)

There are exceptions, of course. Anything listed under the RingDoll sub-menu is by RD specifically and they don't cater to any dolls outside their own models. And I think Dolfie Dream is also a separate company, I personally have never bought from that sub-menu, so I can't say for sure.

However, ACBJD has a wonderful customer service in any case, And they often respond either in a few hours (if you sent to them within the work-day hours) or next day at latest. (Holidays and weekends being the exception, of course)

      Best of luck.

    4. I also don't want big pain to be my first foray into doll clothes making, because I do want to get into doing them! *stares at other options*

Thank you!!! He's one I've been hoping to get my grubby hands on for months, so I'm ecstatic 8D

Oooooo I haven't ordered anything through ACBJD yet, so I didn't even know this was an option! Thank you for letting me know, I will definitely be trying this first! The outfit is just in their general "boy outfits" subsection so I don't think the RingDoll or Dollfie Dream subsections would apply xD

    5. Hope the company can make a too order size because 5cm is a lot in doll proportions. And SD to MSD could look like the kid put on clothes twice their size! I did some major changes to adapt an American girl out fit to fit my SD doll where width not height was the issue but you'd be better off making it from scratch honestly or keep shopping for the right outfit. ;}

    6. I definitely don't want that! He wants nicely tailored clothes, not wearing his dad's outfit xD

My plan is to start making clothes in the future, just...not to start with something like this right off the bat. Here's hoping Alice's can help, or I'm back to scouring Etsy for days lol.

    7. So, sometimes I have altered clothes to a new size, but it's much more minor than what you are considering, like tailoring sd13 boy pants to fit dollfie dream or slimming down a t shirt, adding some darts in something or hemming pants.
But 1/4 scale dolls and 1/3 scale dolls are way different sizes in every way. If you were to get the 1/3 outfit in your hands and compare it to your 1/4 doll I think you would agree.
As others have said, lots of clothes on Alice's can be custom sized if you ask. Otherwise maybe you could commission someone for the specific outfit style you like but for the doll you plan to get. Sewing is very fun don't get me wrong, but there comes a point where altering things is more arduous than just starting from the beginning.

    8. That's definitely what the consensus is! I only have one doll actually at home, so it's hard for me to wrap my brain around the difference in MSD/SD. But I am definitely glad I posted on here before going through the suffering of buying the outfit and finding out it's just going to be too much work.

I do want to slim down the sides of some of the shirts my 72cm Impldoll owns, cause the shoulders fit but they look like dresses/sails otherwise xD That's a much more manageable task to get started on BJD clothes, I think.

I've shot a message to Alice's to see if they can custom the set, if not...there's always something else, even if I have to piece together the outfit myself! Thank you everyone for your help! 8D

    9. Dollfie Dreams can share clothes with some of Volk's resin dolls (best fit with SDGr or SD16 but my SD10 shares clothes with my Dollfie Dream) and most of the items on the Volks website are listed as compatible with both. Considering how common Volks sizing is for everything BJD-related they should be a good fit for a wide variety of dolls!

    10. Heard back from Alice's (yay fast customer service!!) and sadly they can't customize this particular set. So it's back to the hunt for me. Hopefully I can find some pieces that will go together and give me the same feel!

      Thanks again everyone!
