We all share something in common, the interest in the creation of bjds. But out of curiosity what else do you do? what do you do to support your doll making hobbies? what do you do in your off time when you're not sculpting/casting/etc?
A fellow canadian!! I didn't notice before . To answer your question right now I'm going to school to become an interpreter for the deaf. Well, that's the plan anywasy but I might later decide that I want to teach deaf children. Not too sure yet. I also like to do other forms of art including painting, photography, graphic design etc etc. ... Your turn!!
Hey there! Besides sculpting I'm studying applied computing. I had planned to study something like game design but my application wasn't accepted so now i'm quite happy with applied computing ^_^ Besides that i'm learning Japanese and plan to go to Japan with my girlfriend after my Bachelor to do a Masters degree in Tokyo and work there after that...
I've always loved to draw and in high school when I was put in clay class instead of drawing and painting, I was upset.. Of course, I ended up LOVING clay and I'm really good at sculpting dragons hehe. Anyway, I am now going to college to be an art teacher. I also love to play musical instruments. My main instrument is clarinet, but I can play many others also. My grandparents are glass blowers and I work at their shop. My grandma is teaching me a lot of stuff about fusing glass and jewelry making and I'm also learning a little bit of glass blowing from my grandpa. Photography is a hobby of mine. I've never had any instruction, but I love to go outside and photograph wildlife.
Hola .I draw manga/anime stuff. Buy and borrow books about dresses and clothes. I work at a local deli in order to pay for the materials i use
Awesome Its so cool to see everyone having different hobbies, and something in common with everyone. I finished my first year of post secondary in July, I took aviation trades and technologies, and I've been looking for jobs as an AME apprentice or the like, I just got a job at a local restaurant so hopefully I can afford the means to finish my dolls I also draw and paint, and do graphic design which occasionally brings in a bit of money too
As far as supporting my doll making habit... I sell my dolls and then use the money to make more and so on lol When I am not making dolls or anything doll related (seems like those times are few and far between these days), I like to paint (my art gallery is here: http://misticunicorn.deviantart.com for the curious) and belly dance (used to do it professionally with a troop but an now mostly retired). I also love to spend time with my family as much as possible. I have three kids (ages 9, 6, and 20 mo.) and my wonderful hubby who has been playing Mr Mom while I work on the dolls at my workshop.
Currently I am the Director of a Photography Center in Chicago. I also am a Photographer professionally. My only real hobbies are BJDs and Photography. So I eat sleep and breath those two things day in and day out.
I love reading what everyone else does on top of BJD's....fascinating! Im a full time Artist, but I sculpt newborns....and to be honest, after soo many years of it, Im ready to transition to ball jointed dolls. I also lampwork glass beads and am passionate about photography. Youstolemysoul, I would LOVE to see some of your professional photography!!
I work full-time (more than full-time) in a totally unrelated field-- printing. It does, however, give me unlimited access to boxes and bubble wrap.:XD
My partner feeds me and puts a roof over my head, and also inserts capital into my dollmaking business. Since completing the NEIS program I get a fortnightly allowance from the government (for a year), which is largely spent on supplies. Eventually the dollmaking should pay for itself and leave a small profit, but its early days yet.
Awesome. That sounds like a really interesting job. I'm hearing impaired (can hear a few sounds but I'm confused if I cant see your lips move) and I'm looking into learning sign language. The courses for UK sign language are quite expensive though. It's something I should really bother to learn. Those are some pretty good perks, really. I get free access to wine for gallery catering and I could do with some more cardboard boxes, perhaps we could arrange a swap XD. I've been winging it as a fine artist/illustrator for the last couple of years but I'd love to work in museums and galleries in the future. I've done my share of volunteering and internships, I just need to find that regular wage. I mostly support my dollmaking by having an overdraft, spending food money on apoxie sculpt and wearing another coat rather than turning the heating on. Aside from my dolls and dollmaking I dont really have any expensive hobbies so I justify these indulgences to myself that way. One day I'll get on the property ladder...one day...
I am a professional painter, makeup/SFX makeup artist for film and photography, and a newfound wedding photographer! My hobbies are pretty much everything I do for work already with the inclusion of playing with my grumpy hedgehog, collecting art books and watching movies.
Oh wow, so many artistic professionals! I'm actually a scientist (chemist!) in the aerospace industry, so my day job takes over most of my life. I sculpt dolls and do illustration as a hobby on the side. The fun part is when chemistry becomes useful in dollmaking or for my illustration work, heh.
I'm a PhD. student studying occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields. It's very non-artistic scientific work, so I'm glad I get paid enough to support my artistic hobbies. Being a PhD. student is actually a paid job where I live (although probably not for long if the government gets their way.)
Such a variety, I love it! I finally got a job in the industry! They're actually paying me to go to school! Now the trick will be budgeting time... All you full time artists, I must say, I'm quite jelous. Though I think I'd go crazy without a 9-5
I make children's video games. :3 I model in Maya and do textures for them in photoshop. I'm really thankful for my job, the stress of trying to pay for the doll construction myself was just too much for me. ;3;
You guys have such cool jobs. I just work part time for a newspaper company in the marketing department.
So I'm an illustrator in the process of writing and illustrating my own graphic novel series. That's not paying right now so I work as a teaching artist for a non profit organization that brings art into inner city schools. I teach a comics class to 6th and 9th graders showing them how to create their own comics. I also teach a class to the juveniles in the Baltimore City Dentention Center. I teach them how to write and illustrate their own stories. They are awaiting trial and all being charged as adults for the crimes they've committed, which makes for some interesting stories. They are my favorite students. You'd be surprised at the talent buried in jails. I would love to just work on my art and be paid for doing that, especially now since I've recently had a baby and am still on maternity leave. I'm a mother of 5 so its hard to find the time to do anything that I want to do and afford it! Right now everything is taking a back seat to motherhood so I would have to say that the things that I want as my profession have become my hobbies, writing and illustrating my own graphic novel series and sculpting my own bjds. Hoping someday to be a published author with a line of bjds based off the characters in my books. Sigh. A dream that I'm working on making a reality....slowly but surely.
