HOw do you make eyes perfect?

Jan 20, 2014

    1. I'm just starting out. Right now I'm working on sculpting faces. As soon as I can get a picture I will but I don't have an appropriate camera on hand for the job.

My problem is getting the eyes to be perfect and also keeping them from getting botched up. I'm working with Premoi sculpey. I like the firmness of it. I haven't tried paper clays because I want a clay that wont dry out so I can practice with it!

Is there some kind of trick that I'm missing? The clay gets so thin around the eyes that it tears and gets messed up. Plus I'm not sure how to make the eyes uniform.

any help would be appreciated thanks!

    2. Perhaps you'd find it easier to sculpt it thick, boil or bake your piece, and then use a sharp craft knife to shave it away until it's thin enough? A wood bead temporarily as an eye in the socket will help support it and keep it from cracking or crumbling on you while you do.

For getting them uniform, try turning the head upside down so you're working on it with the chin on top. You can also try looking at the head in a mirror, or take a photo of it and then flip it so it's mirrored. All of these will help you see errors so you can correct them and make them match.

    3. YouTube is your best friend. I use the "open sleeping eyes" technique lids with a tool. I first learned the technique from Wendy Froud in her DVD doll tutorials and are similar to other doll artists on YouTube and in Ryo Yoshida's BJD book. Hope that helps.

    4. thank you guys. I think I'm getting better at the eyes. I haven't tried boiling it yet but I did turn it upside down.
