I'm making a paper clay doll, not planning to cast it, and I'm trying to figure out how to make spherical ball joints. I think if I get some bearing balls and make some quick molds (out of silicone??) it might work. What method do you use? Thanks!
I bought some plastic beads in a bag of assorted sizes. Since they're plastic, it's easy to use a dremel or drill to carve out stringing channels. I know other folks use wooden beads or balls, too, depending on what's the right size for the joint.
For paperclay it's easy and you don't even have to make molds. Here is a tutorial: http://airdryclay.blogspot.com/2012/09/how-to-make-perfect-ball-joints-for-bjd.html
I should mention, since I'm doing this right now and, dumb me, I forget... Make your base "spheres" larger than what you need. The paperclay will shrink as it dries and the resulting spheres may end up smaller than what you need. Better to make them too big and scroll them through a couple circle sizes, imo. It goes pretty fast.
Oh good! I made mine too big anyway, and I was worried it would take me forever to get them down to the right size.
