How do you decide on your dolls Zodiac Starsign --- dob?

Sep 27, 2016

    1. I would love to hear what other people's views are concerning this subject, how do you choose your dolls Starsign and or birthdate?
Is it the date you place your order? Or the date you pay in full ?
Could it be the date you receive the shipping notice? Or is it the day you open your box?
Alternatively, is it something completely different to these?
I did try search for a thread to answer this, but couldn't find one. If there is one I apologise for the duplication.

    2. I give my dolls a birthday totally independent from the day they came home or something like that.
I choose the date based in the character, in his personality and other things, or even randomly if there isn't a certain date that is significant for them.
In general I prefer not to keep their coming or something like that because I always order dolls in the same period of the year so they would have similar birthday dates if I would do that.

    3. I had the same problem. For my girl, I decided just to use the birthday the company gave me. My boy is third hand and I don't know when he was gotten, so I'll just use the day I complete him. If I used the day I got him their birthdays would be too close for me.

    4. to me, birthdays are for characters! my dolls' characters have birthdays that i've picked for their story, personality, etc. i like to call the day a doll comes home a dollyversary ^-^ although since all of my boys have been hybrids so far, their dollyversaries are the days that they're completed.
for example, nicky's birthday is august 18th because i know for sure he's a leo and i wanted him to be born in the summer. his dollyversay is april 16th because that's when he was completed ^__^

    5. I chose mine for the character, not the doll. Many of my characters exist before the doll, and often they get reshelled or are hybrids, so an order or shipping date wouldn't even work for them anyway.

I usually go with what zodiac sign fits, or what season I want them to be born in, but I do have a pattern now (that didn't apply to some of my older characters). The birthdate has to be on the 3rd, 6th, 13th or 26th of the month. Only Eirnin, Parker and Derby break this rule. Parker got his because of Justin Timberlake, Eirnin's is the same as Harry Styles, and Derby kept her birthdate from her CoA because she had been sitting in stock at MoC for years and they were so happy to move her that they included a free head. After that, it felt wrong to change her date since she waited so long to find a home!

    6. I choose my doll's birthdays by their arrival date. Since I know, what their personality is like, I choose the perfect zodiac sign. According to that, I calculate the best period to order exactly that doll. Most of the time it works, but the wait times kill me xD
Some of my dolls don't have a complete character, but based by their arrival date, it helps me find out who they are. There is also one doll that arrived too early. Since it was a limited, I couldn't wait to order it any longer and chose the first date starting from the desired zodiac sign. Which was a month after the arrival date.

    7. For a new doll, I do date order is placed unless the company specifies otherwise. I don't do PIF because some companies will cast before that, and the doll could be sitting around for months already in existence waiting on your payments. Likewise, I don't do date of arrival, because I figure an orphan isn't born the day they're adopted, but for some people I suppose it's close enough.

For a secondhand doll, I would just use the oldest date reliably associated with the doll.

    8. if you are really into astrology past just the sun sign look up alabe.com and create a real chart for your doll! it would be fun and kinda cool

    9. The birth date of my dolls is normally the day they are complete. For example if I send my doll off to get his or her face up done, the day that she comes back home to me is going to be her birthday. That's if she already has her eyes and wig ready for her arrival.

    10. My doll's birthday's is the day I open their box when they arrive to my house.

    11. Depends for me. With my Makies dolls I chose the day they arrived at my door unless I had their actual creation date (the day they were printed) which was their "birthday" quite literally. But most of the time with other dolls like bjds I go by character. If I already have a character in mind, i'll pick a starsign that's fitting to their personality or i'll roll a dice lol. I do the same with my rp characters, I usually either roll a few dice (a d12 for month and then a day dice) or I pick a really random day out of thin air with the assumption that if it's instinctive, it's probably "right" haha.

    12. My dolls don't have specified birth-dates, let alone star signs. Because the characters are pretty much staying the same age, they aren't subject to time passing in that way. Certainly not aging on a human time-scale. For example, Alphie, my first BJD, has been ten years old for eleven years now.

      Teddy

    13. For me it's about character rather than the physical doll itself-- if it's a doll whose character doesn't have a birthday for whatever reason, then it doesn't matter to me so much, though... but I'm bad at remembering dates, so I definitely don't go by their arrival dates, or I'd never remember anything-- I'd have to actually assign a meaningful date or have it be written down somewhere with character notes.

    14. I typically will say the dolls birthday is the day the arrive at my home, and the character is a bit more complex.
Depending on the character I'll either pick a favorite month/day and then choose the year of their desired age.
Sometimes if they are to have special similarities to a real person I'll give them that person's birthday. Like my grandpa for example, I named a doll after him and gave her his birth month and day.
Other times I do research on what zodiac signs can fit the personality I want for a character and try to pick something with in a chosen sign.

    15. i feel like the day i unbox the doll will be their birthday (same for secondhand dolls so that the birthday is unique to me), though usually when i write characters i base their zodiac off of their personality....and im quite pedantic about those small details about my characters, so we will see how that goes |- D

    16. At the moment I'm using the day he got to my house as his DoB and I find his 'personality' I gave him kind of fits that but also doesn't so maybe one day I'll completely change his character and decide a DoB for him!
      Same goes for my girl.

    17. I think I would probably look at the characteristics of each zodiac sign and then find one that I felt fit with the direction and backstory I would give my doll. As for a birthdate, I would probably want to track it by the day they arrived however that limits the scope of what you can do with them zodiac wise.

    18. At first I thought it would be their arrival date. But after I decided more on their character, I first used the Myers Briggs personality test thing and based her starsign which matched the best with the personality type. But to be honest I still haven't decided on her actual Birthday.

    19. With Lue, and my other Volks dolls I use their creation date off of their head plate to get the month, and the year, in order to figure out both their Chinese Zodiac animal and their Star Sign. Lue ended up being a monkey, which irked him no end, lol. He wanted so badly to be a dragon! XD

His Star Sign is Scorpio, which is kind of funny, as several very special and important human people in my life were/are also Scorpios. ^_^

Since the head plate only gives the month and the year, I just pick whatever day's date feels right, for example: Lue was "born" in October, and because he's a demon, I chose the 31, Samhain. ^_~

    20. I like to open my dolls as soon as I get them, so the day they arrive is the day I use to determine birthdays and Zodiac signs. Johnny is a Pisces, Alistair is a Gemini, and Chloe is a Libra like me.

This system is a little complicated for dolls that come in pieces, though. My Johanna consists of two floating heads (one for each side of her split personality) and eventually one body. Her first head arrived during the Virgo time frame, and the other arrived in the Libra time frame. I could assign a different Zodiac sign for each personality, but this system does get a little cumbersome at times.

    21. The day they arrived to my home is their birthday and their zodiac sign goes according to their birthday.

I'm not a believer of the zodiac in real life because I don't think all aries behave the same, for example. We are all unique and I don't need a star sign to tell me how a person is so I don't think it is important to choose it for their personalities but I still like to know which signs my dolls are just for the fun of it.

    22. I choose zodiac sign(s ; sometimes I go all out and pick at least moon and ascendant as well, sometimes half a chart lol just for the hell of it) first, birthday comes after. For both I just go with what I feel clicks with the character, it has nothing to do with their doll's arrival date or anything.

    23. I go by the personalities associated with the signs. I tend to buy dolls near my birthday or during Christmas so they will all have similar birthdays if I went with that xD

    24. The day they arrive, or if two arrived and they where not meant to be twins, I would make one the order date.

    25. The day of delivery and box opening. That's when he/she becomes 'alive'. One can never be sure of the actual production date unless the company informs you. Mine arrived on my own birthday (good timing) so that's going to be easy to remember.

    26. for me the dolls' themselves have a birthday and not so much the characters. tho one day the characters might have a set birthday but I'm not sure yet. all of my dolls are secondhand from the Marketplace on here, so I make their birthday the day I revived them in the mail because I don't know the day they were cast. As of right now I only have 4 dolls. Athena - AileenDoll Ashes V.1 (July 28, 2014), Belle - Limhwa Half Elf (January 3, 2015), Kaia - AileenDoll Lapis V.1 (November 5, 2015), and Pandora - AileenDoll Seed V.1 (June 20, 2016).

    27. This is a little hard for me, because my characters often already have birthdays before I shell them. In that case, I just kind of ignore when they arrive and just stick with the birthdate I already have for them. I'm kind of on the fence with what I want to do for Ilya though; I was going to just use his arrival date because I didn't really have a set birthday for him, but when I gt his twin brother...would I make that his birthday too? It's all kind of up in the air! I might just choose a random date and have that be it for both of them.

So basically, it depends for me! (I don't place that much emphasis on characters' birthdays anyway, so it works out fine generally.)

    28. My dolls birthdays are always their arrival dates, even if the star signs don't exactly make sense. My Scorpio doll, for instance, is very sweet, shy, and family-oriented, a perfect Cancer.

    29. For me, their birthday (and zodiac) is either the day of arrival or the actual birthday of the character they are based on/inspired by, if any. My L is the only boy in the family whose birthday is both his arrival date and the original birthday of his character - October 31. :whee:

    30. When my first doll arrived, her CoA came with the date she was cast on it. I decided to go with that! It makes the CoA feel especially like a birth certificate. Besides, if I ever forget her birthday, I can always look at the CoA to remember this way.

    31. Boy! Is this ever a neat thread!

I was going to use the date on their CoAs, which still seems the most logical to do. But I would love them to all be born in February and be Pisces like me! I'm going to have to give this some consideration.

    32. For the dob on the coa I take the arrival date, but for the actual character the doll represent they have their own dob (but they usually doesn't tell me). So no birthday parties for my vampires :(

    33. I'm gonna be a creep and admit I usually just go with the birthdays of friends, family and people I know for my dolls/characters, I tried to pick after what zodiac signs fit for a while, but their birthdays didn't feel... natural, it felt like someone had carefully hand-picked them (and someone had; me!), and that just bothered me too much. Other than the birthdays my dolls doesn't have anything to do with said friends / family / etc.

    34. It varies. If the doll is for an established character with a set birthday, then that is the birthday. If I hadn't gotten that far with the character, than the arrival date becomes the birthday. That doesn't happen often though, since my characters usually get a birthday pretty early on. For the ones with a set birthday, the arrival date of the doll becomes the day they "move into town" in my story.

    35. Honestly, I'm the same as @Leokitsune! For dolls with set characters, they already have a birthday, usually corresponding to a Zodiac sign (I try to pick birthdays to match signs to certain characters orz), but for dolls that don't, I'm waiting to see what their birthdays are when they arrive! I don't mind too much if the sign isn't an exact match, and since dolls without set characters are kind of developing, I can use their new sign to help with personality and the like!

    36. I go by whenever I do there faceup. I feel like that's when their character is truly born.

    37. My dolls are avatars of my original characters, so the dolls' "birthdays" are whatever the characters' birthdays are, and consequently they get whatever Zodiac sign that goes with their birthday. Same for their Chinese zodiac. Whatever year the character was born in, that's what the doll's sign is.

    38. My doll's birthday is the date the head/full doll reaches my door step. Even if I'm not there to sign and it gets sent to the post office, I consider the date it first reached my door step  I was in a dilemma whether to choose the date it first reached my door or the day I went to collect it and my friend told me to think as the "baby" was born when he reached my door and I am going to fetch him from the hospital later on XD

    39. My dolls have pre-determined birthdates and zodiac signs, since I build characters while planning out dolls. However, I don't let their signs rule my character's personalities, as I think doing so is highly restrictive.

    40. I use arrival dates, but once a birthday is set it's set. I have a couple of guys I've re-shelled, so their original first arrival date stays their birthday. For characters I do plan to buy dolls of, their birthdays are TBD until they actually arrive! But honestly, exact birthdays don't come up all that often, so not having them for the incoming ones doesn't bother me.

    41. i don't really have fleshed out OCs that my dolls are meant to shell, so i generally go with arrival dates or (in the case of floating heads) the day that they become complete dolls as their "birthday" :)

    42. So I know some people have their dolls birthdays as the day they arrive home and some are character specific but what does everyone personally do? I'm just curious to see how many people do each or whether they do something different!

    43. I do when they arrive to me. One of mine actually came on my sister's birthday.

    44. One of my dolls has a birthdate written on her certificate, actually, so at least for her I'm just using that. My other doll is secondhand so I'm not sure how I'd decide her birthday...

    45. I think I'll make my dolls birthday the day I get her in the mail ^^ it'll be really fun to look up her astrological sign and do a birth chart for her to maybe tell me more about her personality ( it's silly I know but I think it'll be fun to look into)

    46. For mine, I consider their birthdays as the day that doll came to be in my possession, the day I first had them in my hands. So say a doll is second hand and had a birthday before, irrelevant. Or maybe they arrived while I was away on a trip and couldn't pick them up until I got back. The birthday is when I do so. I'm very strict about following the same rule for everyone, which then leads to some disappointments because some of them have much nicer order dates, like New Years or Christmas, haha. But a rule is a rule so I stick to it!

That said, that's not always reflected in the characters themselves. Some characters never had a defined birthday before so I'll use the doll's, but if they already did or I just don't like the doll's for the character, then I won't change that in the story.

    47. My dolls all end up with their arrival dates of the heads as birthdays. Sometimes this is true in plot (Nadya's birthday is 8/25, for example) but other times in-plot it's a bit modified (Fuyu's "birthday" of September 16 is either the day she was made, the day she gained sentience, or both; Hideyasu's "birthday" of August 22 is the day he was discovered in the woods.)

Fun fact: my dolls' arrivals tend to clump together - everyone so far has arrived between August 22 and November 29, three of them in October. Next doll ought to break that streak, though. :XD:

    48. THAT SOUNDS SO FUN

    49. I know I'm really excited! it'll be like a nice little surprise what sign she ends up having ^^ I'll have to pay special attention to what time she comes too since that can affect the chart as well

    50. Omg same, I have two heads so far, one was November, the other December and I have another on the way which will be this month too :XD:

    51. I'm having trouble deciding my hybrids' birthdays. What do other people do?

    52. I think I would go with when the head arrives/arrived!

    53. I have their birthdays as they day they arrived or the day they were completed. One of them I'm a bit unsure on because I sold her and then rebought her (as in, rebought the exact same doll). I'm still going to use her original birthday though and pretend she never left my possession xD

    54. I consider my dolls’ birthdays (with one exception) to be the day they arrived to me. I wrote these birthdates into their characters. Just for fun, I later happened to look up the corresponding astrological signs and was was surprised to find they matched their existing personalities perfectly. I suppose it was just meant to be.

The one doll it didn’t work out for also happened to be a hybrid (I used the date her head and body were joined) so maybe that ‘broke the magic’, lol.

    55. Their birthdays are the days I unbox them. My dolls have birth dates on their certificate (usually the days they're shipped out) but I prefer to give them birthdays when they're opened :)

      • x 1
    56. I actually do this! I have personalities based on the characters but I'm so lucky their signs have been perfect for them! I guess it's fate!

    57. First, I create a personality for my doll and then I look up what astrology sign fits them the most. Then I pick birthday! For my doll Flora, she is an Aries and her birthday is March 30th, but I celebrate it on May 29th because that is the day she came in the mail. It's kind of weird I know, but it also is the anniversary I adopted my cat! :D

    58. Mine are character birthdays. Since I buy dolls to shell characters, I often have a birthday chosen before I even pick a sculpt, much less get them home. I've been big on birthdays since childhood, when I memorized the birthdays of all 32 kids in my first grade classroom, so picking a birthday for my characters is as important as picking a name to me.

    59. Interesting topic. My first doll has an actual (manufacturer) birth date, my second didn't so I used the date he arrived. I hadn't considered linking the dates to personality or astrological signs. If I did that, the first would be Gemini-which really doesn't fit his personality and the second would be Cancer, which could fit him :)
