How do you cast a hollow head with eye holes? I want to try my hand at making my own doll but have NO idea how to cast the head in resin. Thanks Skeek
Hi Skeek, I have taken pics of the process as I did my own head so I'll post a "how too" for you later. Kaye
Ok .. here goes .. hope this works!! First .. seal up all openings int he head with Klean Klay or similar product. Then make a platform on the top of the head as pic below. Then press the head into a suitable container, make sure the clay platform grips the bottom of the container, I just tilt it sideways to see if it will hold position. Pour you silicon over the head. When set up, take the mold out of the container (I usually have to slit the side of the container with a scalpel to get the mold out). Take the clay out of the inside of the head. Place some toothpicks or nails or similar around the top of the head and secure with a little clay .. this is so the air can escape from the mold once the resin is poured. Place the mold back into the container the other way up and band it if you had to split the container. See pic below. Spray entire mold with mold release .. I use Mann ease release 200. Give it a second spray just to be sure! Now pour the head insert mold. Pour enough silicon so it covers the top of the outside head mold. Yo might notice I forgot to allow for a pour hole to pour the resin in my mold!! Silly me!!! I did cut a hold later which is easy to do but you can allow for the pour hole by adding a little plug of clay to the top of the head .. I usually do it at the back of the head. Here is the finished parts of the mold. Hope that helps. Have fun Kaye
Hi Batchix, I try to do things the simplest way possible!! I have had to work it out for myself because I couldn't find instructions on molding anywhere!! Now I'm trying to work out how to mold the body parts .. yuck .. not so easy!!
I think this calls for pictures of what batchix has been doing so everyone knows the multiple ways of casting heads!
Thanks! Does the froggy eyed (inner piece?) keep the head hollow? It looks like it would take up all the space. Skeek
http://www.danperezstudios.com/workshoppages/molding_casting.htm This has some basic info about two part molds... I'm hoping to try casting the body I'm making soonish, but right now I'm so sick. ;n;
Donn's tutorial: http://donnkinney.easystorecreator.....asp/categ_id/20/parent_ids/6/Name/Moldmaking Can't find the thing I was looking for, but I second getting a look at what method batchix has been using for casting heads
