Maintenance How do I Wipe Clean a Vinyl Obitsu Body + Parts?

Dec 15, 2020

    1. Lately, I have been reviewing the seller’s pictures of an Obitsu 60cm doll I purchased and noticed she was yellowed only on her soft vinyl limbs. Is this what I should have expected for 9,000 JPY? I hope I didn’t make a mistake purchasing her.

I chose to purchase her in this condition for 9,000 JPY instead of buying her for 20,000 JPY (200 USD) new from Parabox. I’ve seen prices for used Obitsu BJDs near the price of a brand new 40cm-60cm Obitsu BJD, so I felt 9,000 JPY was a steal. You know, until I got elbowed in the stomach by the international shipping prices.

How do I wipe her clean and remove the yellowing without burning lots of money (again)? Do I disassemble her before I try to clean her off? I have so many newbie questions!

READ BEFORE POSTING: I know this thread is not about resin BJDs.

Obitsu 40cm-60cm framework-based (Angel Philia, Azone, etc.) dolls are grandfathered in and considered on-topic and are exceptions to the rule. Do not leave a comment on here about it possibly being off-topic and non-resin! I asked for help in cleaning off an Obitsu vinyl doll body and head! I will not repeat this again!

    2. I have heard that Benzoyl Peroxide, found in most acne cream is good for removing stains from vinyl dolls. I have seen many people use it by leaving it on the vinyl for a while to sit and then rinsing it off and repeating the process. However, I'm not sure if it also would work the same with deep yellowing. I feel as though it would, but it may end up taking several applications and trials to get it to a decent color. Hopefully that helps?

    3. I know @K-2! is a good vinyl doll resource. I think this thread will get moved to Off Topic / Brigadoon.

    4. What the heck is the Brigadoon? It looks like Brig of Doom :eusa_pray. I thought dolls with Obitsu and associated framework were considered on-topic due to the grandfather clause.

    5. Updated: Solution to Yellowing Dolls and Resin Eyes (updated 2020 with Picture)

Obitsu are grandfathered in on-topic for Den of Angels, but Doll Dreaming has more vinyl-specific content :>

It looks like high-volume hydrogen peroxide works as well as benzoyl peroxide to remove yellowing. People who collect other dolls and vinyl toys use similar oxidizing agents (ie strong solution of Oxiclean laundry powder) for the same purpose. I would disassemble before cleaning because oxidizers will cause the screws to rust.
$90 for a big Obitsu is a good find! I hope you can clean her up successfully, I find the restoration work I've done on my vinyl girls makes me feel more attached to them~

    6. They are! (Only the bigguns though) It shouldn’t get moved. ^^
Brigadoon is just where dolls and topics that don’t meet DoA’s exact standards of “on-topic” go, it still gets plenty of traffic so even if one of your posts were moved there it’s not the biggest deal. ^^

    7. I wish I knew how to post images on here so I can show you the extent of yellowing. Or should I wait until she arrives from Japan before doing extensive research?

    8. Thanks for the clarification!

    9. My personal feeling is, never buy a yellowed doll unless you are knowledgeable and prepared to deal with it. Yellowing is rarely just on the surface. Hopefully you will be lucky, and all she needs is a good scrub! :)

Posting pictures: you need to use an image hosting site like Flickr or Imgr - you can't upload directly from your computer. If you need help managing these sites, please feel free to PM me, and I'll be glad to help!

    10. Oh dear.. I will learn how to disassemble her and see if I’ll have to order new external and internal parts. I don’t know much about yellowing at all.

    11. The good news is...who cares what color her internal parts are? Otherwise, do give her outsides a good scrub...maybe that's all she needs! After that, there are some helpful remedies. It's all a learning experience, after all. :thumbup

    12. The other good thing is Obitsu sells limbs and hands separately. I don't know how often they restock, because they seem to be out of most part aside for their optional hands, on their international English website, so if you can't remove the yellowing, you can always purchase the parts separately, as you need or can afford them. (:

I don't own an Obitsu, and never removed yellowing, but I do own a lot of OT figures and dolls, including a stain magnet silicone body by Phicen/TBLeauge, which was stained by dark thread on a new unwashed garment, and was pretty bad. I was able to use the Oxy10 acne cream to remove the stains completely, which again were pretty bad, by just applying the cream consistently after it dried for a few hours and reapplying it again. I thought about using a UV-light pen a few days into the process, and it sped things up by quite a bit -- I had read on a figure-collecting-forum that UV light (usually sunlight) is what helps activate (or speedup) the cream, so I would have probably saved a lot more time had I done that before, but I guess better late than never. Good luck!

    13. I also have a question about the Obitsu replacement heads. I read that it is made of vinyl that is harder than the vinyl used on external limbs. Do they need to be wiped down before attempting a faceup? Do heads yellow like the bodies do?

I’m just wondering because my 50cm Parabox-Obitsu Luna head is coming soon and I already have an image in mind of what I want it to look like. (Look up: Luna Hand-Painted Head D)

Update: I attempted a faceup on the head, but it ended looking like a raccoon when I tried removing the paint. Can I use paint thinner to remove it?

    14. I have a very badly yellowed doll that ended up taking so much work I just covered up the arms and legs with clothing. And I tried everything. You did get that doll for a steal, however.

    15. Obitsu limbs are of a firmer vinyl than busts and torsos. I believe heads are of the same vinyl as busts and torsos but frequently appear harder because the vinyl in the head molds is often thicker than other parts. With all the details in the molds from eyes, noses, mouths, and ears the vinyl is really laid in there making heads seem firmer.

It's not a bad idea to wash down heads before a face up to remove any residue from the molding process and any skin oils from handling. A mild dish soap should do the trick.

    16. Yellowing can be cleaned with peroxide. DGRequiem has tested it on Pullips; since Obitsu bodies are made of similar stuff, it should work on that Obitsu body as well.
(And yeah, this is probs going to Brigadoon because it isn't about resin dolls.)

    17. Cited from the Criteria and Submission Guidelines for On-Topic Dolls:

      Exceptions
Exceptions are made for some doll lines that previously fit our criteria, but which do not meet the current requirements. Please note, these specific sculpts and lines are allowed; it is not a blanket acceptance of all sculpts or lines similar to them.
      • Volks Dollfie Dream lines that use elastic stringing or the DD Inner Frame
      • Obitsu-licensed dolls that use their 40/50/55/60 series frameworks
      • Volks Dollfie Friends Baron
      • Ghost in the Shell Gynoid (2005)
      • Volks Reitenshi
      • Volks Ai-tenshi / Hikari tenshi
All Grandfathered DD and Obitsu (mini-size and large-size) must still follow the regular topicality rules about open-eye sockets that can take changeable eyes. Only the bodies are Grandfathered, based on the internal structure first developed by Volks.

You may share off-topic dolls in our off-topic section, and you may share off-topic BJDs that you have made in the BJD-Making workshop. Dolls posted elsewhere on Den of Angels must meet the requirements listed above.
