How do I repair Broken Fingers?

Jul 31, 2005

    1. I suggest gluing the finger back one. Who is your doll? What company and size? Some companies (like luts) are nitorious for having resin color differences. And not all companies make their hands the same way, so you will have to find the right hand. You can check the company website for spare hands or e-mail them. Many will sell replacement parts.
As for mending lines, if done correctly you shouldn't be able to see much of a line. If there is one you can try blushing over it to match the resin or use apoxie and pastels blended to match the resin to repare the hand.
      Good luck!

    2. Take it from me, mended fingers don't stick out like sore thumbs if you do a decent job of it. However, if the line bothers you, you can try putting a ring/jewelry around it. I'm sure there are some available in the accessories section.

    3. Oh dear. @_@ This has got to be one of the worst cases I've seen...

I really don't have any advice to give, but I hope you get him fixed up.

    4. Awww, that's not cool D: I hope you can get new hands, or at least find the fingers!

    5. Awww... poor boy. Good luck! I'm fairly certain the MNF hands won't fit in a Kid Delf socket though... I used to have an older Soulkid body with hands similar in size to KD, and MNF hands were way too small for it. :( Also, if your boy is Realskin instead of the older CP NS, the MNF hands will be a different color. Another option is other mini-sized hands... is there another company that might be a good size/resin match? Actually, if you could find some older Soulkid hands, I think they'd be a great size match, and the Souldoll NS is fairly close to CP NS... though the chances of finding those are probably lower than just finding some KD hands for him.

If you have Apoxie Sculpt or something similar, you could try sculpting on new fingers, but you might have to blush them to match.

As others have said though, once you get the funds send your pictures to Luts and ask if you can buy a replacement hand. They're usually very good about that sort of thing.

Anyway... best of luck and I hope your poor boy is feeling better soon!

    6. If you only need one hand,it may only cost you $10,but with shipping I don't know...:(

    7. here's how I restore broken fingers.

1.the fingers were broken during a fight between my client and her husband, and the broken pieces were missing.

2.I copy the missing fingers then drill hold for inserting steel wires
      [IMG]

3.apply resin to fill up the gap in between the broken pieces.

      4.sand and trim and done~~~

    8. Wow that was really amazing. You can't even tell the fingers were ever broken. Really useful and I hope it helps the original poster as well.

I know I would freak if one of my boys broke their fingers. Given Yaris came to me with a broken finger. My solution was to use that to enhance his character, he now has a skeletal finger that marks a curse on him. The finger was sculpted by Meggilu but I put it in place much in the same method zombiedog used.

I drilled a hole into the hand then slid the wire at the end of the skeletal finger into the hand to check the fit. Then I used a glue to bond with the resin as I wanted it to be a permanent modification and tada Yaris now has a very interesting hand.

    9. My cat bit my boys finger off and I glued it back on. And yes, there is a noticable line... but I'll probably cover it with something. A ring or try to fill it with like-color clay. But since my boy is part robot, I added a few gears and wires to the outside of his hand.

And if you want to replace the hand just e-mail the company, then send the hand in so they can match the resin color. I had one of my dolls hands stolen by a bad faceup artist. So I just sent the other to luts and they sent it back in about a week or two.

      Good Luck.

    10. So, my boy took a fall the other night and lost a finger (while I was watching Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang no less). I've decided that, rather than gluing it back on, I want to it seem natural, like he lost a finger in some way. I'm just not really sure how to go about doing this.

Obviously I'd have to sand it a bit to round it off, give it that cut-off look, but I was looking for some other tips or recommendations, since this is the first time I've ever done something like this (my first doll also). Not just on the actual execution of it, but on what I should do.

I want to try to tailor it to his character but I'm not exactly sure how to do that -- he's an android, so I'd like a couple ideas on how to make it android-y.

Is it safe to put scuplty straight onto "raw" resin like that? Is there any way I should try to protect it until I'm able to get some TDC and seal it off? Because I may not be able to get around to doing his face-up/blushing for a while.

      Thanks~

    11. check out my mod shop thread in my signature, I took off two fingers for someone and made them look "shot off and healed over" but since he is android, that may be of no help..
you can put super sculpy on resin but you will need to "bake" it with a hairdryer or something like that..apoxy is more permanent and doesn't need baking, just curing time.
here's thought: for any android you could put apoxy sculpted on it, get it the way you want and get some wires and put it in the apoxy, so it looks mechanical..and have them sticking out a little so you can tell he's not human.. *shrugs* j

    12. I totally second Catdancers idea for the wires. It'd be really cool if you could get a tiny LED light in there to like... Blink or something but I doubt that one would work. >.>

    13. Ooh, little wires would be awesome...
But if you want it to look more "natural" you don't have to add anything. In fact, just sand around the edges to a more fingertip-ish shape and maybe blush a little scar colouring on it.
My grandmother actually lost a part of one finger, (about where your boy's is broken even) and I can say for a fact that on fingers the skin will grow back smooth with very little scarring.

    14. Somthing like apoxie sculpt would work better than sculpy in this case. Believe me, I know. I have a boy who lost the same finger on the same hand, and I tried using sculpy to fix it. It didn't work, so I used apoxie sculpt. I just sculpted a rounded end for the stump, sanded to blend the apoxie sculpt into the resin, and then bandaged over it. In your case, you might be able to do as others have said, just sculpt the stump up a bit with apoxie sculpt and add some bits of wire sticking out. You may even want to paint it with a bit of metallic paint, if that would work for the character. What I'm thinking is that you could possibly make it look like metal and wires showing under the skin where the finger was taken off.

    15. Thanks everyone for the tips~! I was thinking wires, yeah, but wasn't sure how it'd look. I'll try to sketch it up I suppose and get a rough idea. I'm going to the craft store today, so I'll see what I can find for inspiration perhaps :D

      Thanks again.

    16. Reviving this thread with a question --

I got in a TAN doll some time ago with a broken finger. Went to reattach it recently with a gel superglue. However, the one I'd gotten was not the fast-dry type, but the slow, hold-or-clamp-pieces together type. So, the finger didn't reattach and now I have a slick "cap" of dried gel-glue on both ends of the break (and still a stump and a loose finger).

Would I be able to use superglue (classic?) right over that or should I try sanding it rougher first? Or try the freezer method for loosening the glue residue?

I did find a fresh tube here of "quick gel no-run super glue" but I noticed warnings that it's best for "porous surfaces like leather, cardboard an wood" and not to use them on polyethylene or polypropylene. Now I know those poly-plastics are what soft plastic bags and plastic containers are made from, so am I right that polyurethane would be okay? (There actually WAS a superglue I saw in the store that said for "plastics and nonporous surfaces". Would that be better to try? )

    17. The other day my friend's doll was sitting on the couch and accidentally fell off.
And the right ring finger snapped off :(
It was a clean break, so i was thinking some careful supergluing of it back on should fix it...
Does anyone know whether theres any kind of superglue that would wreck the resin that i should avoid?
Or if theres a better solutions to this problem?
I REALLY dont want to wreck her doll further :sweat

    18. I don't think this belongs in the Discussion thread, so it will most likely be moved to the Workshop/Costumizing/HelpEmergency! Thread (where there is probably already an answer to this question). ;)

To answer your question though~ You can use Aleene's tacky glue to fix the finger/(s). My MNF Shiwoo came with a broken finger (I knew beforehand), but then he fell multiple times breaking two more. :/ So, I broke out Aleene's tacky glue (quick drying type, actually). And they are still on after about 6 months after gluing them, lol. You just have to hold the finger there for a minute or so for it to stay and then let it finish drying. If it still falls off, let the glue dry/get tacky and try holding it in place again. :) I think this works better than superglue, as I've read some can damage the resin??

    19. The only thing you have to be aware of if you choose to use the tacky glue is that it's water soluble, so if you get the fingers wet, they'll likely fall back off again as the glue dissolves. I use superglue on my resin kids...well...have used it on one of them anyway...I THINK what I used was the gel form of the krazy glue brand, but I'm not sure anymore, and no longer have the glue itself. Using a tiny amount of epoxy putty, like apoxy sculpt or some such would work well, too, if you're confident in trying it.

    20. I use superglue on my dolls for fingers. It's definitely wayyy more durable than tacky glue.

I hope you friend knows about this though... lol

    21. I've found that the type of super glue also affects how well it will stay on- I just snapped Indy's right ring finger off. Again. *sigh* All I have is super thin stuff, and I think that's my problem, so go with something thicker or a gel like Ayas-Shadow said. At least that's what I'm trying next. XD

And on another note the purple color changeing Krazy glue can stain resin. A friend commented on how it looked like he was wearing a purple wedding ring. XD

    22. There's a special type of super glue that's better for use on resin...but I don't remember exactly what it was. It works well though.

    23. O No!!:o I am soo srry to hear that :( mabey you colud buy a new hand...
      i hope it gets fixed:)

    24. If you use a gel superglue, though, make sure it's one of the quick-drying ones and practice positioning beforehand. I tried a gel, but it was one of those "hold the part in position for 20 minutes", takes overnight to set completely types, and now I have a hand with a stump and a loose finger that both have a rounded "cap" of shiny, very smooth glue, since the finger just wasn't holding on.

Isn't there a superglue formulation made for plastic? I was thinking of trying that since the regular ones say they're for "porous" materials. OTOH, if resin takes a dye, it must be porous to some extent--

    25. I've found that using a pin vise to drill into both the finger and the hand and then using a little piece of paperclip between the two helps strengthen the repair. Then I used apoxy sculpt to join the two pieces and blushed it to blend into the skintone. A little sanding before blushing should smooth any rough spots.

    26. I have never broken resin before, and I have had a lot of dolly falls and knocks, but finally last night my Soom Super Gem took a dive from a high level onto a hard floor and had stuff fall on top of her! I saw that one of her fingers had come off, I didnt panic too much, until I saw that ALL of her fingers and thumb had come off on one hand only. Odd.

The problem is, she has the Soom MD Topaz translucent resin. If these were regular resin I know where I could find information about patching those up, but I havent found anything to do with breaks in clear types of resin.

Any tips? I dont want to take super glue to them and find out it will have a bad reaction to this type of resin. The fingers came off quite clean, Im confident they will look OK but because of the clear aspect the breaks may be seen easier. They are great hands, its not a case of throwing them away and getting some new ones so easily!

I will post pictures of the hand and my findings as I fix it so they can be used for reference for anyone else in the future, but please let me know if this has happened to you and post information and help. Thank you.

    27. I've used Loctite Plastic Bonder on broken fingers to excellent effect, and it dries clear so you could use it on translucent resin. The break will still look like a gemstone flaw, but that's about the best you can do.

    28. Thats an excellent answer, thank you. I know the kind of stuff to look for in the UK here. Thanks for the information!

    29. My girl's finger fell off, so I glued it back on and used a gem to make it look like she was wearing a ring. The only problem is that the finger kept falling off. It was a good fit for while I was waiting for her new hand to arrive, but really annoying. Zombiedog's method seems like it would work a lot better! LOL

    30. My girl fell over when I left the room...more like both my girls...seemed like a massacre occurred the way they were laying. Thankfully the one girl had nothing bad except her legs twisted (which I just untwisted it and put it back in place) but my only SD girl fell on her face and somehow wound up with a broken thumb *sad* anyway I got out some apoxie glue and glued it on...looking at it, it wouldn't be to terribly noticeable except there's a shiny ring where the glue came out. I may contact the company or I may just buy a ring for her...I'm not sure yet

    31. I did the makeup of a doll that had two broken fingers. I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me a new pair of hands without charge me nothing. Only charged the value of shipping.

    32. do the dolls break very easily?

    33. Zombiedog- where did you buy the resin you use to cover the gaps on the fingers? Besides, great job on the broken hands:o you really cant tell where or even if they ever where broken!
Zion-The skeleton finger is looking awesome:)Very cool idea of yours!

    34. the pinky broke off one of my boys (while I was cleaning. Something fell on him while he was in his box...it was a dumb mistake on my part) as well...ugh it was shocking. I guess I was lucky though, it was a clean break so I was able to glue it back on without any trouble and there is a tiny line but you have to look very closely to see it.

    35. Azukiredbean; "break easily" is really hard to define.

the fingers are almost always the most fragile part of a doll because they are the thinnest part. Hands often get broken from the doll falling on them, someone stepping/sitting/setting something on them.
and every doll is different, depending on what doll you have it will determine how strong it is.
This can be based on resin, but this can also be based on the shape of your dolls parts.
I've broken my DOI's fingers twice now, because they are very slender and long.

(Dollmore model hand ontop, DOI hand below)

They weren't broken there, but a few days later I had him standing against the door to take photos, his hands front of him, and when I turned around to grab something, I yanked a cord that tripped him and he fell face first into the floor (high traffic carpet) and broke his ring finger and pinkie off pretty much at the knuckle.
that was simply from the force he put on them himself.

Now I also have a spare pair of DOI hands from when he first broke them and I never did find the finger that broke off, I've tried breaking the fingers off the hand just to see what force it takes, and I haven't been able to yet; with my own personal force. (Either pushing, pulling, the fingers whatever direction... I also chewed on the fingers one day ._. .... I have a really bad habit of chewing on things that are in my hands)
The fingers do give a bit, and those two extra hands are still intact, but I can promise you if I were to put them on the floor and step on them, they'd break, unless you have super thick carpet.
throwing the hand by itself off my deck into the grass (2 stories) it'd probably survive, into the concrete, probably not.

as long as you're careful and don't drop the doll, let it fall, etc then it will probably be fine.
but accidents happen and thats why there's replacement parts, milliput, and superglue XD

    36. Did you try coating the hand with a layer of MSC? It might make the shine at least less noticable. :)

    37. HELP!!!
I just noticed that my doll has a broken finger!!!

he was standing up on my table and suddenly fell and I wasnt able to catch him...
he fell onto the floor! I was so afraid his ears might have broken I didnt notice one of his fingers broke!

he is a Long by Resinsoul... bought thru Featherfall...
I check their website and you can buy heads and bodys and horns... but not extra or replacement hands!!!

      what can I do!??!

ok what is the best glue to use? to replace his finger? for now till I can get him an replacement hand
how should I drill a very tiny hole in his finger to put a wire there?

ok I used superglue... and Im gonna let it sit for 24 hrs just to make sure it solid before sanding...

also I noticed my cat chewed on the finger that had broken off... he put a few pock marks teeth dent in the finger!!!

    39. still new here... I posted here than thought to ask a mod... but i wanted an answer... b/c I am panicin!

normal epoxy glue? or the two part epoxy scupting putty?

I WANT TO GLUE IT BACK ON!.. at least till i can buy him a new hand
normal epoxy glue? or the two part epoxy scupting putty?
should I score the break surfaces.... b/c they are very smooth... so the glue adheres?
give me advice peeps so I stop panicking!

he is suppose to go to a con and his very first doll meet up this weekend!!!
I just carved him his guitar! he cant play with a broken hand!

    41. plain superglue should do the trick, I've never had to do it myself but I have a friend who has a doll with a couple broken fingers and I believe that's all she used and they've stayed on just fine.

    42. aww I'm sorry for your dolly! D: I believe i red somewhere that the parts like horns & hands can be bought through special request, so you got to ask them, they'll help you figure out a way ^^
      Good luck! :hamster:

    43. Super glue works great, just be careful not to put loads on. Then just lightly sand around the break when it's dry ^^ Fixed!

    44. I had asked ResinSoul about buying spare male hands once before(after I had alreadt bought and recieved my female body). They said that they could make some for a very little amount, but I'd have to pay the regular EMS shipping cost. I'm sure they'll be happy to sell you spare hands if you email them about your broken one. ^^

    45. ok peeps Im gonna try to glue his finger now... for temps fix... wish me luck!!!
and Ill try to buy a replacement hand... or Uneide may have one available for me

I did want to ask for bj hands for yYule from Santa/hubby

    46. Now this one I know how to fix. Boil the finger. The dents should pop right out. Also check on your cat. Hopefully he didn't ingest any resin.

    47. @hawthorn~cat - if it is a ResinSoul, contact them. They are really good about selling replacement parts (not from my own experience, but one of a friend and I have heard it many times in their thread)

    48. OOOOOO I cant boil the finger now.. can I? as its superglued back onto the hand!!!

and my cat seems fine... just as spazy as ever... he is notorious for stealing my arts and crafts supplies and parts ... as I make plushies aswell... he always steals my measuring spoons!

I may... if it breaks again... but I want to save up for some jointed ball joint hands!!!

    49. One of my girls took a fall and broke off her index finger. It was a clean break, but the hand probably can't be replaced (limited skin tone ) I was wondering what's a good glue to use to fix it.

I don't know much about resin and adhesives, so i didn't want to just glue it with whatever and screw something up. Figured I'd just ask first :sweat

ETA: I guess i'm looking for something that will hold tight, and isn't messy or blobby.

    50. Just me and I work with resin models... I would get a pin vice.... tiny (microscopic almost) drill bits and the holder. Drill A small hole into the finger, about 1mm deep. Using thin and I mean thin craft wire/floral wire gently fit the wire into the hole to test the fit. Then I would use 2-part epoxy to glue the wire into the finger. Let it dry. Snip the wire about 4mm. Align the finger to the hand and drill the hole about 1.5mm just a bit longer then the finger as you have more resin to work with. Once the hole is drilled test fit the finger and snip CAREFULLY the end of the wire until it's just long enought to allow the finger to make good contact the hand. Make more 2-part epoxy and glue the wire into the hand. If there is any over run (if you are careful there won't be) when the finger wire is placed into the hand leave it as you can gently sand it off when dry. Allow to dry. You can gently sand off any over squeeze and if you do it carefully the hand and finger will be fine. I have personally used this method for several dolls at a convention that fell off a table and were broken. Luckly I had my kit with me as I was showing some models in the Art Show. Hope this helps.

    51. if i had that kind of skill @_@ thanks so much for replying XD

    52. themasterjinn is right, far as I know no commercial glue will work on resin (I came into dolls from the model horse hobby, have worked with resin horse sculptures for 20+ years). Drill and pin is just about the only way, unless you know someone with the skill to sculpt and paint new fingers. Sorry...

    53. But having said that--in the thread "Broken finger, clumsy BF" a few pages from here, several people say they've repaired broken fingers with superglue or epoxy. So those may be worth a try, but I'd still swear by the pin method.

    54. Though not doll fingers, I've used superglue to reattach broken resin bits and they have held up just fine. Chances are, the faint crack line would most likely show but you can always use epoxy to craft a ring around the break to cover it.

    55. My sister's doll had her thumb just fall off (I seriously have no idea how it broke o.O), and we ended up fixing it up with straight super glue. You can see the crack line where it broke, but other than that, it's held up pretty well in the year since it broke.

    56. Using the pin/epoxy method has always worked for me. not owning a BJD yet, I've used that method on the small (1 inch tall) figures I collect. Most are pewter, with plastic accessories, and I've never had a problem with separation. * and, I've had a few fall off the table with no serious results* This also includes "Bone" a completely pewter dragon I painted and assembled years ago, he's been thru many moves from house to house with no ill effects....

    57. Hobbywhelmed; I tried the gel type on plastics and I know it doesn't work well. I glued a broken part on a resin statuette with the old runny kind of super glue and it stuck fine. I am about to attempt a repair of a broken doll finger myself........in fact that's why I was reading all the previous posts, to help me decide the best way to repair it. I'm not up to drilling and wiring, then gluing the finger back on, but it makes the most sense for a really strong repair. Maybe you are able to do that? I'm going to use the super glue for plastics. Hope your repair is successful, no matter which method you try.

    58. I use epoxy, myself. Never had anything re-break after that. Superglue is so not super.
