Now i have a stupid question here (mainly because i just got my first doll and have no idea what some things mean) what does this do for your doll exactly? just holds the pose longer? : )
The doll makes better poses and hold it longer. Sometime, with hot glue sueding, doll can do poses that they couldn't do before =D Thanks for this tutorial, I'll do it on my migidoll body that can't even stand up T_T (sorry if my english is awfull ^^")
I'll add my thanks--my wife and I have sueded three dolls now, with good results. With the low-temp glue, I can get away with using a nitrile glove, which I like because I get a better feel for what I'm doing. Using paper or cardstock gives nice results, but it feels clumsier to me (your mileage and finger-happiness may vary).
thank you for actually putting up pictures I've read tutorials before but the pictures make it so much easier
I'll put your lesson to your bookmarks.Your pictures were very detailed and helpful. Thank you for posting!
I used a wooden skewer to suede the tiny joints of my flower baby... Does the glue not stick to the paper much? It stuck to the skewer but I just kept pulling it off. I wonder if rolled up paper would be easier or harder. Hrm. I'll have to experiment..
Thank you so much for posting this. As I'm new to bjds and poseability is very important to me, I was experiencing some anxiety over this. I really had no idea what it was. I feel way better now!
How does one remove the glue if it is done incorrect? I've used kips on my girl, but they just don't do the trick. I'm worried about messing up with the hot glue though x.x
Thank you for this, it is incredibly helpful as i want to hot glue suede all my dolls but couldn't quite grasp how to do it, the photos make a big difference
Thank you so much for the clear explanation. I've been wondering what the heck sueding was ever since I got into the hobby (lol I'm a bit of a noob). I was thinking it had to do with actual suede leather or something. Glad to know I was wrong. +5 doll knowledge achieved!
Great tutorial, I will definitely try this as I am bit unhappy about posing of my IH EID girl (old body type). I just need to buy a new hot glue gun.
My daughter's first doll, a Mirodoll boy, just came the other day and we were both quite disappointed to find that he was too slick and wiggly to hold any sort of a vertical or straight pose other than very inappropriate ones. We will be trying sueding this weekend. I am going to test an idea that popped into my head in regards to the smoothing of the glue issue. It occurred to me that I might be able to place the rounded metal push button from a retractactable pen over the tip of a small glue gun and use that, heated, to melt the glue a bit and thin and smooth it. I'll post back my results.
I just did this today with one of my tinies! The tutorial was very helpful, and she stands so much better now. Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial but, may i ask a question? I'm very new with dolls and I'd like to know is, when I'd like to take it out, how should I do it? I'd like to try this with my doll, who has the syndrome of the floppy feets but, I don't know if its problems with stringing or that I should hot glue sue, her, thanks by the way!
Hi Novah: Sometimes the just working out the stringing might do the trick for more poseability but even with correct size and lenght rubber string it might not make the doll hold the poses well. Poseability has a lot to do with the jointing of the doll, in my opinion single jointed dolls make out the most with having hot glue sueded joints. Taking off the glue: When I take out the hot glue out of joints or anywhere else (Like Volks hot glues the eyes inside the sockets) I simply peel off what I can, sometimes it comes off fairly easily and no extra measures are needed. But then there's the Volks hot glued eyes and some other glues that need freezing. I put the parts in the freezer for couple of hours and scrape the glue off while they're still frozen. It comes out in junks. I'll add this and more information in the first post.
Thank you so much for the tutorial!!! My boy hasn't been glue sueded since last year's Anime North; I think he needs to get redone this summer. Someone always did it for me, but with this tutorial I think I can attempt it myself.
Soo, I wan to try this on my Limhwa Mono, but I'm kind of afraid to because I'm scared I'll screw it up somehow, but then I got to thinking- how badly could this be screwed up? It doesn't seem to difficult, it's pretty straight forward... But still I'm nervous about it o-o As long as I be careful and don't rush it, I should be okay, right?
Max I was nervous doing this too! I hate restringing so I didn't unstring the doll - just pulled the joint apart and squirted a bit of glue into the 'socket' of each joint, spread as quickly as possible with the glue gun nozzle, and hold it apart till it dried properly (which takes seconds). Yes it was a bit of a mess - not all neat and nice, but mistakes peeled off easily, and it was totally worth it - brilliant posing now, from what was a kicky, flicky, head twizzling doll! Just be sure and use the WARM setting on a dual temperature glue gun, rather than using hot.
Oh I bought a low heat glue gun to make sure it wouldn't be too hot. Now I just have to wait for the replacement elastic to come so I can restring him afterward. I'm most excited about doing his head, right now all it does is snap to the sides, front, and back and won't stay facing forward >.>
yes that's so annoying! Just put some glue around the very top of the neck (which is hidden inside the head socket) and it will be fine - no need to unstring him.
I will! I've already taken his head off without restringing him though. I walked around with his head freaking people out. It was awesome! So I'll get a little head start (ba dum tiss) on sueding him and see how well it works!
Doesn't the glue fall off over time? I always had problem with hot glue falling off after they are dried.
Dragonhive: Some glues don't last too well and literally fall off the moment they've cooled down, I've had this happen to me. Solution for that is to find a better glue, usually the "no name brands" are kinda useless. I don't really have any advice on what's better and what's not other than trying them out. Thankfully they don't cost too much. And the layered glue does wear off a bit by bit after handling the dolls joints, like wiggling it's arm or legs as this is not a permanent way to suede a doll.
Well, I hot glue sueded my Mono's head and it worked perfectly! And it turns out my low heat glue gun is so low heat that I didn't need any paper or gloves to spread the glue- I just used my fingers (but to be fair I have very high pain tolerance, so YMMV), and now instead of his head snapping to the side, I can pose him to be looking straight forward. And it was super fun! I can't wait to get his replacement elastic and do the rest of him
yaaay - glad it worked Max Like I said - you can just pull the joints apart a little and spread the glue in the socket part of each joint (including the torso joint) with the glue gun nozzle (easily cleaned off the nozzle when dry) - just hold the joint apart for a minute while the glue dries - no need for restringing!
I haven't really done hot glue sueding before but the images made it look easier than i thought. Thanks!
My friend had shown me how to do hot-glue sueding, but I'd forgotten how (even though it seems pretty easy in theory). Thanks for clearing it up! I still can't quite get it as smooth as yours, though. I suppose that will come with practice.
Love this tutorial, it's so helpful. I have not been using paper for hot glue sueding, but I'm definitely going to try that next time Thanks for posting this!
Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial! My boys stand and pose so much better now ^^ I found that if you fold the paper into a triangle it also helps.
Thank you for the tutorial! I don't have any materials lying around for traditional sueding, so it's nice to have alternatives. A note on removing hot glue: I ran across issues with the stuff in another hobby, and I've found the easiest way to remove it is to dip a q-tip in rubbing alcohol and gently rub the hot glue with it. Eventually the hot glue should become brittle enough to peel right off. Obviously, not something you want to do if the hot glue is anywhere near blushed/sealed areas, since the alcohol could damage the painting.
Thank you soooo much! My boy has a three part torso and he keeps collapsing over and I think this is exactly the thing I need to help
thank you so much for this post, been owning my doll for a year and still i cant figure out how to pose her properly. im so scared of removing her strings so, im trying this out, hopefully it will help, thank you, thank you so much!
Thankyou! I'm hoping this will help a very stubborn 1:12 to stand properly..... fingers crossed Sent from my XT1033 using Tapatalk
The pictures in this tutorial are fantastic! I've watched some youtube videos but the pictures are so helpful.
Thanks so much for this great tutorial!!!~ I'm totally going to do this to mine when I have some free time~~
