hooray sculpey! first attempt at making a doll ^^

Sep 16, 2005

    1. Okay... this is my first attempt at sculpting... EVER... so be gentle. I know it's not the best, but i'm totally having fun with my giant box of sculpey. XD

I still have lots of sanding and a bit of carving to do. Eventually it will be a boy doll.

I have the torso done too... but haven't baked it yet, so no pics yet. Not sure yet if i'm going to give him legs... after looking at this thread (http://www.denofangels.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36111) I may be making him into a mermaid. X3 I find myself really wanting a mermaid doll.

    2. Cute ears and nice cheekbones ^^

    3. The ears might go higher.

Maybe he's a cool guy that needs to wear sunglasses, so everyone else can know he's cool, the glasses would hang oddly.

Human ears join the body about even with the eyes, and then the cartilage reaches up further. Obviously elf ears will be somewhat different.

I very much like all his other proportions.

Please post more pictures when you can.

    4. :3 Thanks for the comments.

Ann: yeah, I looked at a lot of pictures, and went through a LOT of different ways of doing the ears before I finally decided... hey, there's no set outline for what an elf should look like. I wanted the ears to point down too, as opposed to up... to keep him from looking too happy.

:3 Anyhoo... more pictures soon. I baked the torso, butt joint and one hand today.

This also sparked some hilarious conversation between my brother and I when he arrived home just as I was taking my sculpey butt out of the oven. XD

brother: "Are you baking... an ass?"
      me: "yes, yes I am."

    5. Oh, I just noticed something else.

Your sculpt is white; you must be using just basic 'Sculpey'

If you use the 'Super Sculpy', which is sort of peachy colored, you will have a much stronger product, although a little more troublesome to work.
And if you want a white doll in the end, you'll have to paint the critter.

I don't want you to have made your whole doll only to find the stresses of stringing it cause damage.

There are a couple of other strong clays--Cernit, Fimo, Promat. (I looked up a polymer clay FAQ for this info ( http://www.polymerclaycentral.com/pcc/pcfaq2.html#brands )

Especially when it comes time for you to make arms & legs & little fingers, you'll need a strong clay.

    6. the white stuff shatters. >.<

    7. o_O really? i've been sanding, carving, digging out holes and all kinds of stuff and it hasn't cracked or anything for me...

o_O i've made arms and legs and cute little pointy nail fingers and nothing has happened. do i have mutant sculpey?

      edit:
      some pix for joo:

    8. Dropping the white stuff can leave you with a sad little pile of dust and fragments--not 100%, but Sculpey is known not to have great cured strength.

Glance over that FAQ I cited in my previous message; they aren't trying to sell anything.

It's quite possible to damage the strong clays I listed even once they are properly cured, but damage takes more effort.
Improperly cured 'clays' are pretty weak, across the board.

Second point: I am in love with those hands. You have mad hand skills.

I finally started my first doll head somewhere in the msd/sd size range, and my hands have been sore all day from kneading the Super Sculpey all last evening (I have carpal tunnel syndrome; the pain is actually not as bad as I had feared). The head is looking decidedly egg-shaped, but that's about all.

    9. Those hands are wild! Is the doll going to be like an evil elf? She/He is looking pretty damn cool so far. Those hands.....wow. Did you sculpt them over an armature of some kind? :cow

    10. yeah... he's going to be evil. :3 Eiji needs someone to whip him into shape. Once all the pieces are done, i'm going to cast him in resin.

armature? o_O ^^;; i just kinda... sculpted it. there's nothin but sculpey in the middle, if that's what your asking.

    11. looking nice! ^__^ The hands are cool! and the floopy ears are cute! :daisy

I'd reccomend the super sculpey too...the white stuff is brittle if you drop it or put stress on it. I maybe true it will be okay for now, but when the stress of stringing is put on him, he might break....I'm just telling it from experience.

Tehn again I've had tiny little dragon sculptures made from the colored sculpey (about the same strength) with VERY thin parts which are still intact...but then again they aren't being handled like a doll would...one wrong slip and CRACK I'd break off a part... yeaaa.....

But keep going! Yoru sculpting skills are fine, I'm just worried about the materials that's all... ^^

    12. I forgot to tell you before, but if this is your first time sculpting....wow. I can't wait to see what you're able to do with some practice. :daisy

    13. The thing is, I don't intend to string this. ^^;;; I'm going to make a mould and make him in resin before I even think about stringing.

    14. wow, those hands you made are amazing! :o

    15. how much is resin and sculpey? this sounds like fun...

    16. Super Sculpey is about $10 for a 1lb box. It goes a long way too. :3

Resin is for casting, you'll need to make a mold of whatever you plan on doing. For a kit from alumilite, which includes resin, dye, mold making rubber, measuring cups and stir sticks it's about $70. You can also get clear resin from hobby lobby for about $10- $20 depending on the type you get.

    17. oh... i think i'll stick with the sculpy. ^-^'

      thanks!
