Homes for Tinies discussion part 3

Apr 19, 2013

    1. It's screwed in from between the walls. Basically we just grabbed a screwdriver and started unscrewing everything we could reach until we could pry the walls apart. The bottom bunk will be hardest -- the battery pack is right there too -- and we could barely get into the space to reach the top bunk screws. The floor is uneven underneath the bunks-- you may find that building the bathroom on top of the bottom bunk might be much easier than trying to remove it and even out the floor.
Best of luck! I'd love to see what you do with it.

    2. Will this house work for Littlefee dolls?

    3. I'm thinking no at nine inches tall. Works best for 5 to 6 inch dolls.

Icicle thanks for the info. I have no idea what I'm getting myself into.

    4. That looks great! That was the kit that got me to notice campers in the first place. I think the height of the kit is 22cm, so 16 cm should be fine? It's hard to say though.

    5. This looks like it might be a small 1/12 scale (I'm looking at the photos and the dimensions). It would, I think, be a really close call re: whether it was too small for your 16cm girl; her head about only be about 6 cms from the roof at the highest point. But it is a camper so. . . .

    6. I think that kit might be small enough scale that only a Real Puki would fit comfortably. I might be wrong though.

    7. Ack I just double checked and realized she's actually 18cm not 16cm, I was thinking of my other gal. It would have been for my Lillycat Aglae. Darnnn. The search for a really cute trailer will continue. I maaay still buy that one though, since it's really cute and also I'm thinking of getting a pukipuki soon :3

    8. After some delays, I finally got the walls of my loft cut, and I started working on the floors during the wait. I'm quite satisfied with the price, I was initially expecting it to cost a certain amount and it turned out to be half of that. So I'm definitely going back there if I decide to build my own glamper.

    9. That looks greatโ€ฆ.
What materials are you using for the floor and walls?

    10. The floors is a combination of mounting board, basswood strips and lots and lots of popsicle sticks. The walls are MDF. :)

    11. I like the use of popsicle sticks. They make for a perfect miniature hardwood floor!

    12. I love this thread all your projects are amazing. CaptainOlly there is a uk miniatures shop that sells 1/12 caravans/trailers and i think they ship worldwide http://www.seasideminiatures.co.uk/

    13. Oh wowza *o* those prices are crazy good too.

    14. Thanks for the info....

Please keep us posted, I am looking forward to seeing more of this project.

    15. Of course! Although it might take some time, I have a lot of steps to work out like installing wallpaper and adding support beams for the loft and I'm trying to figure out the proper order of things. The one thing I can safely do first is prime the walls. :)

    16. I'm going to transform a shelf in my room into a photo area/dorm room esque area for my Yo-SD's/Off topic dolls for other photographs. I even plan to hang one of those locker chandeliers.

    17. That was my original plan before I decided to build a loft box instead. It's a great way to utilize existing space.

On other news I've been buying a bunch of Re-ments. I really need to stop, they are so addictive. @_@

    18. Especially space that was going to be cluttered otherwise. Just a matter of getting it done.

Oh Re-ments I've seen them. Always so tempting but never sure if they'd fit some of my doll's sizes.

    19. don't know what size dolls you have but they work best for the 1/6(yosdish) or 1/8th(lati yellow/pukifee etc) sized dolls, at least the ones i've seen do. they are generally too small for the 1/4 (msdish) and too big for the 1/12th dolls

    20. I've seen photographs of Re-ments with Barbies and it looks pretty good, although I think it's more to scale for slightly smaller dolls like Momokos and Liccas, where my little girl is of similar size. :)

    21. Some progress on my loft box, the support beam won't be in the middle like that, the loft is just a dry fit here.

    22. It's coming along nicely Humbug. What size dolls are you making this for?

    23. My doll is 22cm, which is a bit of an odd size for a tiny. :)

    24. Eh, I have a bunch of different sized tinies. They're my favorite size to work with. My large dolls get things commissioned for them, they stand around looking pretty and all my time goes into my tinies. :P

    25. It is coming along nicely, Humbug! Can't wait to see the finished project.

Did everyone see that Real Good Toys (the dollhouse company) now has a sort of 1 room dollhouse for American Girls ( I know they are about 18inches tall)? Thought it might work for YoSD -- or that it could be somehow made into a loft type room for smaller dolls.

Here's a link for you creative types to consider:
My Dreamhouse Dollhouse Kit for 18 inch dolls - build a house for your american girl doll

    26. I think I'm gonna need another roombox... Another tiny and so many idea's for her particular style... I love the one I have but... I can always get another if I can fit it... I'm mostly looking at the already made dueplex ones on Amazon (the ones that cost about 19.99) mainly the one that has two rooms. I just need two more rooms... After Christmas though. (Though honestly part of me really wants to buy one of those giant book boxes and use that while it's opened as a roombox)

Sorry for double posting... Found those boxes I wanted~

    27. I love what people do with bookboxes, how will you be furnishing yours?

Anyways, here's an awful phone cam pic.

Loft box has progressed a little, I'm also bashing a cheap kitchen set I found so that it fits under the loft, and Esme is there to make sure she and the counter will fit comfortably under the ladder. The entire thing was a dry fit so I was absolutely terrified everything will collapse over her. Luckily nothing happened,

    28. Love the kitchen set.

      As for my little bookboxes:

This one was decorated for Halloween... The coffin is also going to be my new girl's bed. I don't know what I'll do with the big one once the holiday is over. I might try and experiment a bit with making more rooms in it.

    29. It is looking good, I am really loving this loft....

I really like this idea of a book box....
      Looking forward to more pictures.

    30. I'll be sure to do more. I got a lot more idea's for the larger one for other occasions.

    31. Some rement fits my Fairyland pukis, some fits my littlefees (YO-SD size) but mostly it seems to go best with my pukifees. (Which is convenient for me because my two PKF are some of the only dolls I have with a modern story setting so they can use all the tiny food and props!)

    32. thats a cool set rosslyn. is the backdrop just foamcore?

    33. Thank you! Yes the back wall and the floor are foamcore so I can easily put it all away when I"m not using it. I built the woodowrked parts with various pre-fab wood bits. I have since made "tatami" mats for the dojo floor with textured paper and tin plates so that the PKF magnetic feet can stick to the floor for better posing. I need to do a little more with that set. I want to make it into a full miniature dojo, and then build a little room set of Jules' living-room in Oahu. He lives right by the beach, so I want the view out his windows to be of the lanai (porch) and then the ocean. I am basing his story a little on my experience staying at a beach house in Oahu.

    34. Hey everyone! I did not come here for a long time, but I have a lot of furniture and rumboksy to show you. Today I want to show a bit of room for girls bedrooms 1/8. The beginning of my work on this room I showed earlier.

    36. Rosslyn, Thank you very much! Then I'll show you a little bit more this room.

    39. Seeing all the beautiful rooms and houses in progress let me feel guilty...........oww I have so many things in progress but no time to work on !!.........Well at least ( and I am sure I already posted it here once ) Bae's house is ready.

    40. All these roomboxes and houses look lovely! I made a few roomboxes for my Lati yellow myself, a living room, a classroom and a kitchen, my next project would be a bedroom or a study room. If you are interested to see the photos, you can check out my Flickr account, I'm not sure how to post photos here.

I have a question though, anybody bought these DIY roombox kits from China? I'm wondering if it would fit Lati Whites. I've seen photos of a DIY house kit with realpukis over here but am not sure if the houses and rooms are of the same scale.

    41. How tall is a lati white?
      sorry I have no experience with them, only Fairyland tinies, but I can tell you the miniature shop kit's seem to be a reasonable scale for realpuki's (9cm) and okay for pukipuki (11cm) but those miniature room boxes, the only ones I know are like these;

      Doll House Miniature "Warm House"

Doll House DIY Miniature Merry Christmas 3D

And they are a little too small for pukipuki's but a pretty good fit for realpuki's.

    42. a lati white is is right in between a real puki and puki puki at 10cm tall. though they have a more chunky body like a pukipuki

    43. thank you auntbear :)

    44. Thank you raewhitewolf! I guess I will have to buy it to see if it works.

    45. okay folks: Lights. What are you using? I just got done installing a set of string lights in a realpuki tree house I have been building since forever-ago, and the last upstairs room needs a little light in it as well. Pics to come, eventually- this treehouse should probably have its own thread but I haven't documented as much of it as I'd like, because I don't have roommates and when I'm working on it I am covered in plaster and paper mache.

    46. I just use those dollhouse led lighting kits when I can find them over here, they come with the battery pack, wires, little tiny LED lights, they are pretty easy to use.

Okay update on my Puki house, I have added the corrugated tin roof, now I need to paint it and I've also painted most of the trim parts and glued them in place.

On the last picture you can see I have marked out around the window, I plan on cutting out a section of wall out and making french doors, I'm hoping if I cut it carefully enough I can cut the piece in half and use it to make the doors.
So now I have a bit of dremel work to do shaping the porch and balcony rails, and the window eaves.

    47. looking good. i like the distressed wood finish on the walls. cutting out the french doors and retaining the pieces intact sounds challenging. how will you get the saw in without cutting a hole out of the door?

    48. I intend to try and make the initial cut with a very fine dremel cutting wheel, then after that I should be able to slip a hacksaw blade in to finish cutting the corners.
The old weathered wood is from some scrapbooking paper I found. I knew I either wanted to make the outside look like brick or old weatherboard, and I really would never get it finished if I had to carve in all the detail by hand, so I went to spotlight and rummaged through all their printed scrapbooking paper for something that would suit. I couldn't find any brick design in the right scale, but this wood desigh came close enough.

    49. until you said that, i thought it was 3d painted wood so from here it works very well

    50. Using a lantern is such a creative idea! I love how you gave an "earthy" feeling to it, it's beautiful

    51. Thank you Mari .............and a Lantern safe a lot of dusting duties !!

    52. [IMG]

So I decided to go back to working on my other dollhouse. It sat in my room for more than a year because I had no idea what to do with it. But I finally figured it out. It's a slow process though.

    53. @Humbug that is a really cute front door and windows, where is that from?
@raewhitewolf I love the tin roof! I'm looking forward to seeing the french doors and the upper balcony! It looks like it was already a lot of work!

Here is my WIP sweet shop. It's eventually going to be called Spumoni Sweet Shop or something like that. I'm super slow to work on it and take pictures. The base is from a store called Greenleaf. They are really reasonable, this is the bora bora bungalow, I'm thinking about buying the tea house because it's on sale right now for $19! Idk I still have a lot of work on this one though. >.<

    54. It's a Barbie house. I was quite pleasantly surprised to see one that is not bright pink. Altho I still plan to paint over it. XD

Your sweet shop is looking great! I have a real soft spot for those.

    55. i like the blue white and cream color it is now. much more natural looking than the usual bubblegum pink barbie houses. what color are you planning to paint it?

    56. I really wanted to do something different with the colours, and incorporate my favourite colour, purple. Here's a mockup of what I want to achieve. I'm going for painted lady look. :)

    57. that's going to be very bright and cheerful :)

    58. We've been working on an elaborate tree house out of hat boxes. I've gotten a little hung up bc I need to add some wires if I ever want lights and I am worried the front where I cut the fronts of the boxes away needs more structure, perhaps some staircases etc. I have some wonderful little helpers. I am making the chair and I made the little crate as well, out of craft sticks.(it's supposed to look a little rustic;) ) I don't have pics yet but I have cut all the little round windows and arched doorways which really added to my excitement.

    59. Oh that is just darling, perhaps my fav kit I've seen. I've been looking at them on ebay actually a little worried they might be too small even for my Real Puki clan, as some of them are only 4" high which seems too small, but I am tempted to just order and try one. They are a good deal for all the miniatures you get!
