Hi peeps! I am Bleu, long time lurker of the BJD community but finally lucky enough to be in a position where I can buy dolls! I am hoping to make friends and meet people of similar interests! I am from Utah, in my early 20s and have not really found anyone else who has similar interests in my real life aside from my immediate family, err, my grandma and mom exclusively. I do not sell, but I do make my own doll clothes! My grandma taught me growing up, I am one of three boys out of all fourteen of her grandkids (It's crazy!) and the only grandkid who seemed to take an interest in sewing and dolls, lol. I have made doll clothes since I was like 12ish, though usually for fashion dolls or my grandma's personal bjd collection. Additionally I do doll photography for her and just to get pics of my own works! I have certifications in adobe and like to take my stuff to the next level when I can! Creating sets, preparing poses, getting the right angle and adding those special touches after the pic is taken is just such a fun process. I am super excited to finally be able to build my own collection and get and create dolls tailored to my specific tastes, as much as I love the dolls that my grandma has. I know nothing about doing face-ups and am a rather untrained artist when it comes to anything besides clothes, but I am hoping to learn as I go! Currently waiting on a doll from Dream Valley, which I think is my favorite place so far. I super love the creativity of their molds and once I get paid I am hoping to snag one of their dragon dolls from DDE. Hoping they do not get sold out before then!
Welcome to the hobby! And I certainly look forward to seeing your sewing adventures. Dream Valley is a lovely place to start. I take it you enjoy high end fantasy themes?
Thank you and yes! All of their stuff is like, dream doll levels of stuff for me. Even if the dragons get sold before I snag one, I am sure something else will come along that I will love! Still I am crossing my fingers, Collier specifically is absolutely stunning.
What's cool about Dream Valley is that even limited dolls come back to market eventually. Yes, their wait time is a bit much (6 to 9 months, depending) but the dolls are oh so worth it. I own an Ann and a Chaos myself, and some of the pet dolls. Great articulations and posing overall.
Great to know! I am so excited to get into things!! And yeah, the wait, I have learned, is one of the hardest parts of the hobby. And the money, lol.
The money is at least doable with layaway support. That's the only way I've been able to collect anything. The only time I paid full up front was for a centaur, my very first BJD purchase, which didn't have a layaway option at the time. And a doll body because I was just lucky to have the full amount on hand at the time. Everyone else in my crew was on layaway between 6 to 9 months to finish my payments. And usually by then the dealer (Alice's Collection) had the doll on hand and it was a matter of waiting for the shipment. So it more or less works itself out nicely. Except for RIngDoll... I ordered a head and boots from them once, and that alone took nearly a year to get processed. *face palms* I'll only ever get any RingDoll products second hand after that ridiculous experience.
Oh wow that is a really long time. I would just assume it wasn't coming after a while, lol. This next one I am going to get via layaway, but I am hoping to pay it off as early as possible! Mostly just for ease of mind. I have the specific doll I want budgeted, but there are others I want if that one ends up unavailable, most of them are actually cheaper so still works with what I plan to play.
Hello and welcome! You'll find lots of support and information here. I'm ecited to see your sewing creations and doll(s). You're already set to make them just hat you want. Don't let timesbe daunting . You can never guarantee what time an order will tak. I saw someone saying a Ringdoll took a year but I got one in six months and one in three. There are many variables lol! if you love a doll be willing to wait. I agree layaway is a great thing. Anyway, Good luck anf have fun. Nice meeting you!
Thanks! I am definitely not going to let times daunt me, lol. If I must wait a year for the perfect doll, than a year I shall wait! If it is less then all the better! That said, I cannot wait for my first order to arrive so I can get into making him some clothes and taking pics. He is supposed to be here Friday if things go well!
That is FANTRASTIC news! I really hope all goes well. Did you get a full set with clothes? or Is your gent going to arrive and be in a classic fabric toga for the first few weeks? Mine was in a Toga for a wee bit too long for my comfort.
I got the full set! He has proportions that will likely make it difficult to buy clothes for him, so instead I will just be trying to make more clothes for him as soon as I can! But at the very least he will not be nude. It works out though since I have a bunch of work projects lined up so I won't be able to even get started for at least a few weeks. I have some fashion dolls I thrifted with no clothes because they are waiting a much needed hair washing and I feel bad for them since I have not had the time to do it, lol.
@Bleu4You I hear ya there about not having enough time. I can't decide which I prefer, to never have to go to work again or never have to sleep again to enjoy my hobbies XD
I am thankful to where I absolutely love my job, but now that I am officially hired on by an actual company and doing side projects for other places my paychecks are great but my off time is reserved for much needed rest. Summer is usually the busiest time for me anywho since I work with theme parks mostly and that is when they are busiest. I love it! But 4-6 hours a day is taking the pictures and another 4-8 is editing. If I could just not need to sleep I could get so much done, oh my gosh. But for now I am holding out for Sundays, which is my only real day off, lol. Still, the second the doll arrives I am going to go fabric shopping and start plotting out potential outfits in my head!
That is probably one of my favorite parts of this hobby, planning out cool outfits and making accessories. And I totally agree there are not enough hours in the day.
Yesss! I am so excited! I also cannot wait to make them little sets. Thankfully I have a bunch of hand-me-down furniture from my grandma because oh boy is it expensive. Though even still I plan on doing as much DIY as I can.
I am in need of some furniture for my dolls. I have a few things I have scrounged from the dollar store and target. Are you planning on taking photos?
That's so nice! I hope you post photos of your creations. They sound lovely! As far as faceups go, once you gather the right materials, it's not too hard with a bit of experience! There are a lot of resources here on DoA (which is another reason I joined too, to learn and be inspired by so many great people.). I definitely hope you can get a dragon doll!
