Hi everyone, I'm Kroweyy! I've been into BJDs since highschool and I've only recently saved up enough to purchase my first doll. Its a 64cm from 2D Doll and the sculpt is called Merlin. Its gonna be a long wait ahahah but I can't wait for her to come home! However, shes a blank and I was wondering if anyone had any faceup tips they could give to me? Thanks )
Hi Kroweyy, welcome, and congratulations on your first doll order! I'm also based in Australia which city are you from? I'm not sure if you've already researched anything about faceups, but I'll try to give a tip that was not obvious to me - to use nail art brushes to make fine lines. And just in case two very important things: use proper respiratory protection and put a few base layers of the sealant before painting anything
Welcome!! Your first doll is so exciting! Are you planning on posting pictures to the new arrivals? 2dDoll is great. I'd love to order from them myself, so I'd love to hear what you think of it when they arrive ^_^ Also a fellow Australian too! I'm from Melbourne
Welcome, nice to see other Aussies getting involved in the hobby - the more, the merrier! I'm in Melbourne myself. Faceup tips - I suggest reading the Big BJD FAQ as it answers a lot of faceup questions. And a couple of tips... After you've gotten the correct materials (pastels, watercolours, and/or acrylics - nothing oil-based) and sealed the resin head properly... experiment! If you're using non-oil-based art materials and have sealed the base layers, everything is reversible and can be wiped off to start over. So don't be scared to experiment. I also suggest starting with light layers of everything, for pastels and paints both. If in doubt, use less pastel/paint, or lighter colours, and increase intensity through layering. It's easier to start light and work darker, than to erase something that's too dark in the first place. And feel free to ask for advice in the Customization and Maintenance subforums, and check out the threads there - lots of good advice. Welcome again!
Hello and welcome! You must be so excited about your first doll! I hope you have a lot of fun in the hobby and this is a great place to meet other hobbyists and learn a lot about the ins and outs!
Sorry for the late reply!! I'm based in Melbourne, what about you (if you're ok with sharing)? Thank you sm for the advice! Is there a difference between nail art brushes and thin brushes in general? And do you have any recommended faceup supplies that can be bought in Australia as well?
Yes, I think I might post some pictures when the doll comes but its gonna be a while. Its going to be shipped out latest in June but I hope production goes well and it arrives a bit early! Also I'm located in Melbourne too!
Hi Kroweyy and welcome to DoA! Your first BJD is so exciting. As for face up tips.: Practice drawing eyebrows on not flat surfaces.
No worries at all! I've just moved to Sunshine Coast from Sydney Re the brushes - I imagine very thin painting brushes might be even better, but I couldn't find an art brush skinny enough for some reason. Nail art ones are easy to find and order. Re other supplies, I'm afraid I'm not the best person to ask lol, I got most of them from Amazon and they weren't very good. I ended up using my husband's stuff and buying a few individual soft pastels for blushing from Eckersley's. I found MSC (sealant) in some hobby online shop as well, just by googling, and I bought my respirator in Bunnings.
Oh wow! That's definitely something I'll have to get used to with buying dolls new too, wait times I'm currently waiting on a Dollfie Dream Kaito! I've paid the first bit of the deposit, so now just waiting to get the invoice to pay off the rest and get him. Fingers crossed for you!! Awesome!! Do you plan on going to Oz Comic-Con? The Melbourne BJD Emporium people go there
