Hi there! I'm Quartz. I'm not sure what to include in this introduction as I'm very rusty when it comes to forums. I've been lurking on DoA on and off for years but have only decided to finally post since I decided it was a good time as any. I've long been into BJDs and dolls particularly, though have always viewed from a distance. After so many years, I feel like my wallet and I are finally ready to dip our toes into this hobby. I really am looking forward to saving for my first doll but wow, there's so many beautiful ones out there! I'm just waiting on one that really stands out to make that first leap forwards. Though I feel like it's similar to getting a tattoo, so much thinking on the first and then you just want to get more and more after! I've lost track of the years since they'd been released but Doll Chateau's Sleepy has been my dream doll ever since I first laid eyes on him... Sad that he's discontinued but I'm sure he's out there somewhere! It's probably a very quiet life mission of mine to obtain him. Looking forward to the start of my journey!
{waves from Wimbledon!} Hello from another UK based member!! Good luck with the saving and deciding which one to get first They can be a little addictive. Back in 2004 when I got my first, I thought he'd be the one BJD example in my already huge collection of other types of dolls {LAUGH!!!} I can't remember how quickly I reached the 30s and then went on to having over 50 of the buggers. Teddy
Hello to you too! Big waves all the way from Scotland. Thank you! I imagine it'll be a tough first choice. 50 has me in awe, wow what a collection! Over two decades of collecting, that's remarkable. If you don't mind me asking, how do you go about getting new BJDs and why did your first one stand out to you enough to make you finally go for it? Q
Welcome to posting...and enjoy making that decision on who your first one to bring home will be! I shall always remember my first, so much fun and energy felt during the search, finding her, waiting.. waiting...waiting for her arrival! Then the unboxing and seeing her in person is just so much fun! Hope you share photos once you decide.
Welcome to DOA!! I was also a lurker for a long time, but I've been collecting since 2015 and grew up around them since I was a child. So, they've kind of always been in my life lol. Other than Doll Chateau, are there any other companies you've been considering buying your first doll from?
Lifelong collector of dolls, so I already had over 30 years worth of dolls in the house before BJDs came onto the market. This is just one corner of our living room: (about ten years old - I don't have any pictures from the pre-BJD days) These days I try NOT to because I ran out of doll display space about a dozen dolls back. But new ones keep sneaking through the cracks. I see new releases here in my daily look at the |New Threads forum here on DoA, or see pictures of a sculpt I like that someone posts etc. I follow a few (VERY few) makers on Instagram too. If I absolutely fall fro the sculpt and HAVE to have it - I check out th details on the makers/company website, to seeif I can afford it, if they offer layayway (I don't like doing that, I'd rathe rhave all the money for it up front), whether it's a limited release that might sell out beofre I save enough etc. and place an order or Pre-order if it's not yet been released. If it's an older/discontinued doll, I check the marketplace here and various other places second hand dolls get listed. Quite often I'm just looking for the head instead of the entire doll as most of my BJDs are children and (especially in SD size) many head sculpts I like are released on bodies that are far too mature to represent pre-teens (or even younger teens), so I then have to find a body that the head will fit on to hybrid a ful doll together. Pickings are slim in one-third/SD-size for immature bodies for boys or girls. Most of my boys are on variations of the Volks SD10 body (I prefer the one with thwe torso joint) with different limb lengths for height variations among them. Likewise, many of my girls are on variations of the Volks SD10 girls body, though some are on the "angel" (genderless) bodies or ones from other companies (some modded to flat-chested by sanding down the boobs), or on Volks boy bodies with the "boy-bits" removed. The tallest boy (with the black hair, in the brown suit) is my first BJD. Which is probably more detail than you needed. Sorry - I tend to waffle My first is the boy in red and blue in my little icon picture. He's a Luts CP Delf Chiwoo. Back in the mid 2000s there were far fewer companies and a lot less choice than there is now. I looked through the offerings on company websites. I fell in love with the Limityed Edition Luts CP Delf Shiwoo. He was already sold-out but I also liked the human Chiwoo so, when I saw one listed second hand on eBay I bought him. The price for getting him second hand with an otutfit, eyes and wig, wasn't any cheaper than buying new from Luts but I preferred seeing a picture of the actual doll with the actual faceup I would be getting, rather than a generic company faceup on the example on the company website. Also, I was worried about ordering from a company whose first language wasn't English - in case any problems arose with the order and the language barreier made it harder to get it sorted out ( I subsequently found that has not been an issue with any of the companies I've bought from) Teddy
Hii! I just wanted to say I wish you the best of luck in finding your dream doll. I am sure he is waiting for you somewhere.
Thank you for the warm welcome! Absolutely, I'm having such a fun time just looking at all the different options out there. But that's also the thing, so many options and you just want all of them haha. I've got my eyes set on a few dolls at the moment. I figured if it makes my heart ache not to have them then that must be a promising sign! The wait must be absolutely excruciating considering how long it is but it makes it all the more worth it once they finally do arrive, I agree! I can't imagine how exciting getting to unbox a doll must be. My hands would probably be shaking!! I would absolutely love to share photos when the time comes. Thank you for the lovely welcome! Absolutely, I feel the same since dolls have been in my life for quite awhile too. It's nice to finally say I'm looking to start my collection after many years of yearning for it. In terms of companies, I absolutely adore Maskcat's sculpts and have been considering Dollzone, Charm Doll and Soul Doll. A quieter part of me really enjoys Volks' DD collections since it's so stunning seeing characters I love in a different format other than a PVC figure. PeaksWood's sculpts are also so endearing and really appeals to my inner vampire-lover. I've seen Ringdoll's Baldwin IV released recently and my goodness, he is really calling to me as well! You have such a wonderful collection and they're all so gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing the images. I understand the struggle to find display space but when there's a will there's a way. Space can always be made if there's a new doll you're very much wanting. Your approach to creating hybrids to suit your tastes is actually very helpful since I still haven't come to realise that with enough time and effort, I can do the same! The photos shown on company sites aren't the permanent end result and your commitment to finding the right body/head for your dolls really shows how much you care for them! These are all super helpful tips to consider for the future. As a first doll I'd probably go for a fullset just to familiarise myself with BJDs physically, but keeping in mind the possibilities to modify dolls according to my preferences is worth remembering. It must be frustrating that there is limited choice for your desired doll body design. The detail is fab and very much appreciated. It's really lovely to hear and shows how passionate you are about it! Thank you for all the helpful tips in regards to buying/finding dolls as well! Many I've looked at years ago are definitely discontinued/unavailable for pre-order unless they decide to do a rare rerelease. I'm very grateful layaways exists haha but I understand the preference for paying the full cost upfront too. Your first doll is stunning! Very happy you were able to get him off of eBay with everything included. The outfit he has on is super cute. I understand especially back in the 2000s with limited resources available, it must have been a tad more stressful to order from companies when having to deal with the language barriers. Glad to hear you haven't had issues and accessibility has only grown since then. Hi! Thank you for wishing me luck. I hope the same for you as one newbie doll collector to another! I noticed you have Ringdoll's Anubis in your wishlist. Fingers crossed you'll be able to get him. His outfit is insanely beautiful, I love the headdress so much. Ringdoll's collections are absolutely stunning. Also I'm guessing you're a fan of Omori haha. Such a lovely game, it's in my favourites as well. Q
You can indeed. Make sure the neck socket on the head is compatible witht he neck on the body you want and the resin colour is close-enough for your tollerences (some people demand a perfect match, I don't, because most people have varying skin colours between their face and their body), and that's msoto f the hard part done (that and actually gettign hoold of the head and body you want to put together). Teddy
Thank you so much!! He really is a beauty, but I also discovered the Cheshire Cat Ringdoll and now I don't know who to save for first. Guess I'll simply have to save and then go with my gut, haha. Ringdoll really has amazing dolls with such beautiful designs and clothes! I also checked out your dream doll and he's so cute (and such a mood)! I really hope you can find him... There are so many options to style him. I wonder what the actual original design was though. Guess I have to do some more research on that. I wonder what made you notice. I love Omori so much, it's one of my comfort games. I can't sew with sewing machines for the life of it but I actually made a few Omori plusies by hand (Cap. Spaceboy, Sprout moles...) and they turned out quite well. In general Omori really got me into doing more diy stuff, so I am a bit hopeful when it comes to making doll clothing in the future by hand.
Thank you for all the wonderful advice to keep in mind! I'm definitely one to veer towards absolutely covering my dolls in clothes (once I have them!) so any tonal differences wouldn't be too big an issue personally. I understand why others may have preferences towards that though. Your reasoning is very interesting to think about, and too true! Haha, seems the search and wait is definitely the hardest part of the process, yes. I'm not very crafty either so it'd be a little intimidating, especially early on. Just had a look at the Cheshire Cat! Aaah, he's beautiful as well. I absolutely love Alice in Wonderland themes so this is such a challenging pick, I understand your struggle! His sculpt is so gentle in comparison but I love that they've managed to still give him that subtle smile. I would absolutely just go with what your heart is telling you to go for! And it's worth remembering that you can always save up once again to get the other. Ringdoll truly has some wonderful sculpts and the detailing on their outfits never ceases to amaze me. Haha, I'm glad you're a fan of him as well! He's such a cute silly little thing, and yes, very much a mood. His original images and design are available to see on BJDivas, but I feel they don't do him justice given how much variety and creativity others have put into their concepts for him. In a parallel universe I'd have an army of different Sleepys! I still haven't finished the game but absolutely love Omori himself. He's so adorable. I can't help but think of how cute it would be to have a doll version of him! I'd love to see the plushies you made if you ever feel like sharing. They sound adorable, especially the tiny sprout moles hehe. It's lovely to hear that your love for the game got you to pursue new interests and I can't wait to see the doll clothes you'll make. Have you got any ideas in mind yet for what you'd like to create? Q
I am also a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland themes. The variety of customes and designs are just endless! His little smile really his my heart melting. I'll really just have to wait and see at what feels right, but before I buy a doll, I'll spent some money on vacation for next year, so we'll see when I'll actually buy one, I hope I manage to save up quickly. He is! He's so funny but in such a cute adorable way! Oh, I'll see if I can check them out! But honestly, the doll-hobby really lives from creativity and making new versions and designs! Maybe it doesn't have to be in a parallel universe, maybe you get lucky somehow!! Who knows! Sometimes you find things you never expect online or even at flea markets. I went to one the other day and I am a huge greek mythology fan and I discovered the exact sculpture I wanted of the deity I like the most. You just never know! And omg yes! Just imagine how cute he would look... or Basil. Or Hero. Or all of them! Ahhh!! It'd be so perfect! Maybe I can show you via a private convo. I just have to figure out how it works. Ohh, probably something related to egyptian or greek mythology, something simple, though, just to get started! Also I can very much recommend finishing the game, it just gets better and better and the ending ... I still cry everytime I play the ending or watch the ending during a let's play. It's so sad, but so beautiful.
Okay sadly it does not seem possible to post pictures without having them online somewhere so I could add the URL. I don't have any pics of my plushies uploaded online. Sorry, I would love to show you.
Plushies would be off-topic anyway, so you couldn't post them here. You'd need to post them over in the Brigadoon section where there's a thread for off topic figures etc. Teddy
