Hey, nice to meet you!

Oct 9, 2025

    1. How's it going, everyone? I'm Coin, and I'm still pretty new to BJDs as a hobby. I've been aware of them for a little bit, but I don't think it was until 2018/19 that I started getting a bit more interested. I had started watching some of the Pili puppetry series around that time, and learning about the artistry of those got me learning a bit more about BJDs and the depth that they had. I put off buying my own for a long time, but purchased the re-release of the Sakura Miku DD earlier this year, and Aimerai's Hajime delivered just yesterday. The latter is probably my favourite brand, and their dolls were some of the first that really caught my eye. I'm really happy to say that I finally have one of my own.
One of my justifications for spending money on dolls was that I'd be able to use them to get a better grasp on photography. I'm still very much a beginner there too, but it has been very fun to learn a tangible hobby alongside my purchases. I don't yet have a super strong urge to start making custom dolls or learning to sew my own clothes, so photography has been my creative outlet for them so far. Taking doll photos out in public has also been a good way for me to break out of my shell a little bit too, haha. I've already been able to meet a handful of people into BJDs too, so the social aspects are fun for me as well.
Anyways, I can get pretty wordy with these, so I'll cut it off there. I hope to stay here a while and catch you guys around!

    2. Hello! Nice to meet you!

Congrats on your Aimerai delivery! I also really like their dolls, they're so cute!

Do you have any photos of dolls you've taken? I really envy people who are good at photography! I see so many people in my local groups who are amazing at taking pictures, and I'm sooooo jealous!

    6. Thanks! I'm planning on spending some time next weekend going out and taking some pictures, so hopefully I'll have some stuff to share soon. Some of the BJD people I've met already are fantastic photographers, so its always a little bit intimidating as a beginner, but we try our best!

Hopefully someday soon! Sewing is still pretty intimidating to me since it is something I've only ever done in school classes some 15+ years ago. No time like the present, I suppose

The hardest part about pictures for me is finding cool locations to shoot at. I'm not a huge fan of taking pictures around the house or more "studio" type photography, so it's either looking online for interesting places or simply walking around and seeing what I stumble upon. It makes taking photos feel more like a mini adventure than something super planned out.

Congrats! Personally, it is something I thought I'd always be on the sidelines for, so it is fun to finally buy some myself and actually take part in things

    8. Hello! Welcome to DoA. Photos? I would suggest taking some practice shots indoors, as well. Sometimes overhead lighting can be harsh at times. I got a tiny ringlight, and that helps a little. I have not tried to practice with a reflector.
There's a few people here who take wonderful photos, so there maybe photos of their set ups and advice on those threads.
