Sam has recovered a bit but is clearly still not thrilled with life. So after lighting the room lamp Ayr has told Sam she has an idea but has to go see if she can finds what she needs.

*Ayr returns to Sam's room.* "Found this in the old shed with the heating equipment. Should be perfect to transform that chain and collar into the envy of women everywhere."

Sam: "I appreciate the effort, but I'm not sure how some scrap rope is going to do that."

Ayr: "Trust me. Ropes and knots make lots of things better. Now stop being a killjoy and sit up so I can do my magic."

*Sam sits up and Ayr hops on the bed plopping down behind her."

Ayr: "Here take the chain and bring it around to the other side."

Ayr: "Now just hold your hair like that and I'll get you all fixed up in no time."

Ayr: "Alright. Just a few no-slip surgeon's knots and I'll no longer feel the pressure of that chain dangling down between your breasts saying 'Hey world! Look how much better endowed Sam is than Ayr!'"

Sam: "Wasn't this supposed to make me the envy of women everywhere?"

Ayr: "No, I said it's going to make the collar the envy of women everywhere. I guess I feel less insecure about inanimate objects."

Ayr: "Ta-da! My magic is complete. Gone is that annoying slave collar and chain wandering into places unknown! In its place a fabulous metal necklace that screams wealth and importance!" *More quietly* "And says look at me not Sam's chest."

*Sam reaches to inspect her chain and collar.* "What did you do exactly?"

Ayr: "Magic! Where in this case magic just means I tied of the loose end of the chain to the ring on your collar. Still, it should look better and make the chain flop around less. Let me see."

Ayr: "That does look nice. Seriously the envy of many to have something like that around their neck. Plus I really think it will be a lot less annoying held up like that. I wear my necklace all the time and don't find it to get in the way. Just give it a chance. Trust me your day shirt is cut low enough you'll still hold Lucius's attention."

Sam: "It actually does feel less annoying. I feel kind of stupid I didn't think of something like this myself."

Ayr: "Not everyone has my fashion sense."

Sam: "I wish we had a mirror."

      Ayr: "No arguments here."

Sam: "Thank you. For everything today."

Ayr: "You're welcome. Now are you ready to rejoin the world?"

Sam: "I should put my low cut shirt on first."

    2. A small thing, but so practical! Gives me another reason to like Ayr :)

    3. It's the kind of thing that makes you fill really silly you didn't think of it yourself. :XD:

And thank you very much for commenting on these stories. The general lack of response has me close to packing it in.

    4. Sadly, photo stories seem to be going the way of the dodo. The first years of DoA, there were more stories, and more attention paid to them. Ditto for the other BJD chat board I frequented early in my collecting (Zone of Zen, 2005 through 2008); that was where I learned to do photo stories. There was a thread on DoA 8, 10 years back, asking people their opinions about photo stories, and several of the posters pretty much didn't care for them; too much work, unless it was with dialog balloons in comic book style.

Smart phones probably contribute to the lack of readership; too difficult for even young eyes to read much on a small screen. Posting "pretty/cool" doll pics Instagram-style is easier for them. (Yes, I'm an old fart, lol. I still like a good laptop or desktop computer when I'm seriously online, and barely tolerate my Smart phone.)

    5. I agree they're definitely dying, if not already dead. I came in through the vinyl side of the hobby and the same transition happened over there. They were very popular a decade or so ago and have steadily trailed off both in terms of how many are posted and the interest they get. And yes I've definitely noticed popularity is ranked something like silent > comic book > narrative > dialogue. My longer dialogue and continuing story are pure evil. Short attention span theater rules these days.

Old here too. Give me a real screen and keyboard over a phone.

I also find it frustrating that people tell me how much they love the story and hope I continue, but still never comment. Comments are the feedback that tells me it's worth continuing.

Ah well. I should just post a photo of a pile of bodies and say the Vespins won. A single photo would probably make it my best received story ever.

    6. A simple yet stylish solution to the chain. ;)
      Nice fun chapter.

On another note,I really understand your thoughts-feelings on stories and the format dying. Had similar thoughts many many times these past few years with mine, countless times I just nearly quit.
But, I slowly changed my thoughts, in a way.
Would read back through them and see their faces come to life, feel the music flow with the tale. Emotions up and down like a roller coaster. :XD:
I do the stories for me, and the joy they give me to see brought to life like a movie on my screen.
To really get into a fantasy-daydream and play with it.

The roleplay we all had in the stories I deeply miss in the now quieter times, I think it inspired creativity and the pushing of new content. To be able to prod a character at any point of the day or night and there they were, even if they were just cooking or relaxing.
Even though at times there was drama with RP... ;)

Been still making mine, if at a somewhat slower pace (still got a ruddy Christmas "drama" story on the go :whee: haha! )
Would not be able to post them here though.

Don't give up, always loved your stories, and characters you create. Be them a "good guy" or a "bad guy".
If it was not for you, I would have never picked up a camera and made stories.
I wager there are many quietly out there that if they were honest, you were the reason back in the day they made stories.

Many these days post-read using phone, hard to get into the text.
I still cannot enjoy a tale on my phone, must get to my desktop with tea and biscuits to enjoy it.

Yes, i'm and old git too.

    7. This, exactly!

I haven't done a photo story for several years, but ideas are still rattling around in my head, and occasionally I look at my website and feel a sense of creative accomplishment. Much as I'd like some feedback from readers, given the trolls and douchebags out there, maybe it's just as well to be private.

    8. Simple is good oftentimes. Thanks.

I didn't even realize you had a website @beamlette as I have signatures off, but looking at it just now you were quite prolific in the past.

While I understand the satisfaction of past work, the fact that both of you rarely or never do stories these days makes me feel that similarly to me the thought of creating more stories in a vacuum of response isn't all that appealing to you either.

Not sure how accurate that is as there were certainly others posting stories at the time too, but to anyone out there that did start because of me I apologize for dragging you into this dead end hobby. :XD:

As to phones, it's amusing to me if people who use them really won't read text. Phones caused almost all websites to be reformatted to accommodate them (often resulting in many options just disappearing) and apparently those websites are/were chasing a demographic that has no use for them. While I agree reading on the small screen is annoying and if I read something on the phone that seems REALLY long its always amazing how short it is on a bigger screen, I think it's more of a general continuing reduction in attention span. Add in threaded comment systems everywhere and pretty much any chance of conversation is gone. If someone even bothers to comment it's one quick reply from the post author and that's the end. It's often not even clear that the reply to the comment is ever read. Then everyone's on to the next post or at least the newest comment which of course being threaded has no connection to previous ones.

My latest website has no comment system. It's not because I couldn't / don't know how to add one. It's that I think it would be effort for no good. Few read, far fewer would comment, and the odds of follow up comments are basically zero. Throw in the various privacy regulations being created to "control" the big sites that are just punitive on small sites and it's a definite no go. As much as I'd love to have image annotations again it just really doesn't seem worth it.

    9. Done about 16 stories last year, so i'm not quite done, just yet. :XD:
The roleplay is very very little, so I kind of have to get my little lot to be their own drama and situation solvers I suppose.

Perhaps, I have people on other formats such as discord that do read my stuff, but don't comment on it on my little site. The conversation of it might happen in vrchat when I meet them. Nice they read it and mentioned, but alas its not on the website where I could put the words in stone, so to speak.

The old image notes coupled to the RP was a lot of fun though. :3nodding:
Privacy regulations? I don't really look into what legal stuff is going on these days, I just keep plodding on with their stuff.

Its all good, I suppose it keeps me off of the streets. ;) haha!

    10. I made a web comic version for the modern age. No loss in translation at all.

    11. LOL! It works. :3nodding:

You just have to remember to compose the photos to allow space for the dialogue balloons.

    12. I was being a bit sarcastic when I said no loss in translation, although not terrible in this particular case. Many episodes would suffer a lot more though as serious dialogue gets reduced to a sentence.

    13. I think if I tried this I would have to up my usual 25-35 pics per story to about 120 *_* haha

    14. Yes the writing style has to change to fit this format. Long speech goes away but in return a little bit of expressiveness is gained by choice of font, size, bubble, etc.

The wall of text dialog for which I'm infamous would have to go. So the equivalent of St Crispin's Day speech gets condensed down to "Let's go!".

    15. aye

No more long melancholy Miu moments, no more somewhat flowery Dee word meanderings or tirades. :pout:
May would be ok though. :XD:

    16. Early on I learned that too many photos and too much dialogue could be a kiss of death to a photo story's reception. This also led to trying to not take so many photos to choose from! *_*

    17. Yes length generally kills, especially dialog. I have my fans but it turns away more than it gains. Serious topics also tend to turn people away. I've always said people prefer sunshine, kittens, and rainbows. So my comedy elements attract the casual viewers, but don't necessarily pull them in as regulars.

Fortunately I've always been pretty sparse in the photos I take, often only having 0-3 photos that I discard for a typical 12-15 shot story. If I redid the whole storyline I'm sure there would be some with basically no space for bubbles. Like any adaptation the story and characters will just end up different.

    18. I love the posing in this one. Especially when Ayr is leaned forward to talk to Sam and Sam is kinda turned around to talk to Ayr if that makes any sense. Just feel so real.

I also like what they have done with her collar, though I don't think it will help much. Just because everyone else will see it as a gorgeous and stupid expensive necklace doesn't mean Sam sees it that way. I wonder if they could find a metal smith somewhere who could take it off and just let them keep the collar as payment? might be hard to find, but I think it could work. Though it might be hard...Its clear they would be taking the collar off a slave so keeping them quiet would be very difficult, even with that collar as payment. Then again so far no one has come looking so maybe they would be ok.

    19. Thanks. It's much easier to get the best poses from the vinyl dolls with their internal armature instead of the elastic string inside the resin dolls.

Even if it doesn't help Sam psychologically so much, not having the chain flopping all over the place probably will be an actual improvement for her.

And the reason they haven't removed it or tried is the golden eagle crowd says they've tried to work with that metal before and found nothing capable of cutting it.

    20. Ah I wouldn't know. I have no vinyl doll so i don't know the difference between posing. Now I am curious. Posing is very important to me and only about half of my dolls pose the way I want. and some of those I can't pose at all.

Lol very true. and not having is flopping around might help keep her mind off it.

Wow, I don't remember that all all.

    21. One example of the advantage is just that there's no elastic providing tension that wants to pull things out of the position you place them. Of course there's still gravity.

I think that was Ayr's main goal. To stop it from always being in the way.

I have it in my head that it's the hardest material they've encountered, but it's certainly possible it never left my head and made it into a story. :XD:

    22. Do all vinyl dolls have that inner frame? The only one I have ever really seen is smartdolls frames. You know...I don't really know much baout vinyul dolls except they stain. are they even on topic here?

You know I think she did say that. Good lord. Can't pay attention today.

It may have been in there somewhere. If you do continue with this revamp we will see if they ever do mention it. I kinda want to see that actually. I'm surprised Kano hasn't done experimenting ith the metal outside of his gun making. you would think learning as much about it as he could would be step one. Or maybe he would rather leave it to Lucius.

    23. The first Dollfie Dreams were strung, but every other vinyl doll I know of has as frame. It's certainly not a requirement though. Dollfie Dreams are on topic here but Smart Dolls aren't. Not sure if any other vinyl dolls are. It was a grandfather clause type of thing.

I'm not sure. A quick check of where I thought it was it wasn't there. And nothing has ever said Kano's gun was made out of that metal. Gareth's staff isn't metal at all. Plus I don't think Kano does much experimenting outside of the desert menus at various inns.

    24. Huh. In teresting. I jsut always figured all the vinyls other than smartdolls were strung. There are a few Dolfie sculpts I like, I've just never been able to justify the price. The resin dolls I want are much cheaper.

Oh it isn't? I coulda sworn it said somewhere that it was. Though you do have a point in Gareth's staff not being metal. Its just the crystal on the staff and in Kano's gun that does the magicy stuff right? Lmao I thought for you sure you were gonna says something about his only experiments being ion the bedroom.

    25. Yep just the crystals. And I did consider saying his experimentation was with different women, but apparently not so much in the bedroom itself as its apparent Ayr has been more experimental than him in that regard. ;)

    26. Yep...I remember that now. Especially how they found out they can get weird sparks to fly between Star's collar and Gareth's staff. You would think I could remember that. And yes very true. Ayr does seem to be much more experimental. But still. I feel like Kano had to experiment at least a little with as many women as he has been with.

    27. Maybe he feels he's got it mastered.

    28. Or he just never cared about getting better till he found Ayr.

    29. Well I suppose if your plan is one and done you don't have to be good. Doesn't seem his style though.

    30. True. He wouldn't get much if ladies spread it around that he was bad in bed. But yeah...he doesn't seem like that type to not care.

    31. Yeah even as much as he moves around that reputation probably would have caught up to him at some point.

    32. Chiming in late here....

Obitsu dolls are on topic here and are constructed much like Dollfie Dream or Smart Doll.
My very first jointed doll was an Obitsu 50cm girl and she's still one of my favorite posers.

It's this empathy of Ayr's that makes her a great healer...

    33. Wait Obitsus are on topic? I coulda sworn they weren't... are they made of resin? I thought they were...not vinyl but that other plastic. Good to know though!

    34. Pretty shocking she's a surgeon too eh?

    35. The medium and large size Obitsu dolls were grandfathered in because of their early association with Volks. Smartdolls, otoh, use a radically different type of internal structure and are off-topic.
