Here living the dream!

Sep 22, 2023

    1. Hello all!

I'm Fen, and I've been daydreaming about owning a BJD since I was a teenager - I had a roleplaying OC whose "thing" was that she had dozens of them and used them to communicate with people because she had issues communicating herself  I remember scrolling through dozens of photos people took of their BJDs as inspiration for my character and wishing so badly I could own one myself! I've always thought they were so so beautiful.

This year is when I finally took the plunge and put two beautiful dolls on layaway, and it's just in this last week that they finally arrived. No photos yet (I was too nervous about breaking them to take them out of their boxes!) but they're here! They're real! I'm so excited honestly.

My doll knowledge is still very limited, but I bought a practice head because I'm very interested in learning to do faceups. I bought my first two girls as fullsets w/ faceups because I was so enamored with their default looks, but I want to be able to give them new looks myself in the future! We're in the middle of buying a house so money is too tight to actually start buying stuff for faceups but I've got a whole Amazon wishlist stocked and ready for it.

I'm also a crocheter (and occasional knitter) and I'm going to be making sooo many tiny little doll cardigans, I can just feel it.

Anyway, it's nice to meet y'all! I don't know how much I'll have to say around here for the time being but I just wanted to share in the glow a bit of finally getting to participate in this hobby. Only took 15 years but I made it!

    2. Hi welcome to the hobby! :) Long time collector here and best advice: don’t be scared to handle your dolls. Resin is surprisingly durable, unless you drop your doll or are too reckless with the hands, it’s hard to do any serious damage. Fingers tend to be the delicate parts since they can be thin and dainty in some sculpts. Key thing I would say is just make sure you wash your hands before touching your dolls. Grease and oils from your hand can distort or degrade the sealant on the face or body.

Tip number two to get the most out of your dolls: Try to keep them from sitting in direct sunlight. Display cabinets are great to admire your beauties but too much sun can cause the resin to yellow over time. Not a huge problem and it will naturally happen anyways but I wish someone had told me sooner. My first doll was in white skin and because I had her out all the time in my bedroom she has turned a yellow cream colour. Not too bad for how old she is but the company has shut down and I miss her lovely pale colour.

Which sculpt/company are your dolls from? I have quite a few different brands but all of my dolls are fantasy themed in some way. <3

    3. Hi. This is an exciting time for you. The first BJD is so special. Congrats and look forward to seeing your dolls in here.

    4. Welcome. I relate a lot to finding BJD's in your teens and having no idea how to buy them and even less money to do so.

The good news is that dolls are surprisingly sturdy. I had much the same worry that if I touched them too hard I'd break them when I got mine - I'm still nervous about using the dolls themselves as models for sewing - but as Platypus says, they're pretty durable.

Let us know how crocheting tiny cardigans goes - I tried miniature crochet and decided that it was absolutely not my jam.

Also, is your name Dragon Age related because if so, I love the series too.

    5. Welcome! I also used to lurk around forums as a teen and was amazed by just how beautiful BJDs were. There’s nothing that compares to finally having a doll of your own! Enjoy your dolls!

    6. Welcome to the hobby and it's nice to meet you! :D Congratulations on achieving the dream!!

    7. Welcome to the dollhouse!

    8. Welcome! Also a Dragon Age fan here :XD:

    9. Haha, yep to you and Sanar, the name is from Fenris and Alistair, my two faves. It'll probably be a while before I get around to crochet for my girls (because I may or may not be way behind with all the crochet projects I already have...) but I'll share the results once I have them for sure!

    10. They're both MYOU MSDs, Macarena and Chelses! I got the willpower to take a few pictures of them, sans their fullsets since they're so huge and I don't have much space for them at the moment, but even just in their undies I think they're pretty beautiful!

    11. Wow they are so cute! I have been tempted by Myou dolls in the past but I haven’t bought one yet. Their resin looks so smooth and the fullsets look great.

I used to exclusively buy fullsets to prevent dolls from needing more work. With so many outlets for clothes and accessories I find it hard to decide what to buy them so fullsets were the way to go. I just recently started buying blank dolls in the hopes of doing my own thing with them. I have a few faceup supplies and have done a bit of body blushing but I’m still really bad at it. Not enough time to really practice.

Please share some more pictures when you get the chance. :)

    12. Beautiful dolls! I want a Chelses!

    13. I'm both very excited to learn to do faceups and terrified of removing the faceups from the dolls I have! They both look so lovely as they are. But I have my practice head, and I'm trying to look into how people buy dolls second-hand so I can look into getting one who's unpainted and relatively inexpensive so I can do some experimentation.

I absolutely will - the main issue is that since we're moving I'd like to be able to take the girls in and out of their boxes without too much issue until I have a safe place to set them up, and Macarena especially has a bunch of very delicate-looking pieces in her fullset. I might take Chelses out to play with though. I want to get her some proper pictures.

(Officially, Macarena is my partner's doll, in that she made the decisions regarding her color, body type, etc. and was the one who was very set on Macarena specifically, and Chelses is mine. But they're kind of both mine because I'm way more obsessed with them lol. But Macarena is waiting on a name since my partner is naming her. I named my Chelses Delilah! I'll give her a profile once I have some fullset pictures.)

    14. I have an Impldoll Gia named Roxanne that I slowly squirrelled away into my collection that my partner bought. He ordered her during an event to use for photography but as the years went by I ended up with her. She’s my only SD size doll and I have decided I don’t like the size.

I still use my dolls for photography but I do t have many spots to use as backdrops since we moved. I will have to make something in the back garden. :)

    15. Welcome!

Your dolls look so wonderful; you take a great photo of them!

    16. Thank you! My apartment has garbage lighting so I decided to go melodramatic and use a table lamp with the lampshade taken off. I like the dramatic shadows.

    17. I did a proper photoshoot with Delilah and posted the photos here!
