Hey all, I wanted to get some more experienced folks advice with some staining issues on my Dream Valley Maurren. I bought his lovely full set version and had been blissfully keeping him in his pretty outfit when someone on a BJD discord mentioned off hand how sucky it is that DV outfits tend to stain so quickly. After a small moment of panic and quickly strip searching my doll I did indeed find some small stains on his torso and legs. They're luckily not too drastic yet so I'm hoping I can quickly fix him and then order a white under suit. So my question has two parts 1. how can I decrease stains from the outfit in the first place? is there some sort of treatment to set the colors into the fabric more? 2. How can I clean his body with minimal damage to the body blushing? like I said they're not too dark yet but there's a definite bluish stain.. would soap and water be enough? If I'm light enough with a melamine sponge would it take off just the stain and leave the blushing? any advice would be welcomed. thanks a ton ^^
1. You can wash or soak dark clothes in a water and vinegar solution to let the excess dye bleed out (the vinegar will help set it better). But also be very very careful as BJD clothing is usually not meant to be washed and parts might get stained or become undone easily, depending on how complex the outfit is and how details attach. Materials like pleather or leather should not be soaked in water. 2. Just some water and dish soap (without colour and oily additives) with a damp cloth should be enough. Melamine sponge is basically a fine sanding block so even if the blushing stays intact, you might rub off some sealant accidentally, I'd keep it as a last resort. You'll find some more info searching "stain removal" in the forum also
much appreciated! seeing as he majority of the outfit is black it should be good to soak without worry of transfer! Ill go ahead and take all those suggestions into consideration ^^
The vinegar wash or soak will help with removing excess dye, but won't set the dye. It would probably help to do multiple soaks until there isn't any dye left in the water. Even then, if the dye wasn't properly set when the fabric was originally dyed, it's going to keep bleeding for a while. All fabrics will bleed when new but improperly set ones take a lot longer to be free of excess dye I blush all my own dolls and never leave any dressed for long (I keep all my resins nude and wigless inside their boxes, in my closet). I have successfully removed minor stains from blushed areas with a dampened melamine sponge and gingerly scrubbing at the stain. However, dye stains, I've never been able to remove successfully from the blushed area, as the fixable itself was stained. It was while trying 1:6 gloves on my only mature mini a long time ago. I only tried them on, because of the way the fingers are sculpted and 1:6 action figures having soft PVC hands, it was literal seconds I barely tried them on. I had to redo the whole thing. Lucky, it was just the fixative that was stained. You might have better luck, I certainly hope you don't have to remove the blush and are able to remove the stains without much effort. Good luck. (:
