My fiend has a doll and it has really odd looking hands. I mean they look so different from the rest of the body so I said I'd sculpt her new hands and I was wondering if you guys had any tips?
What are you using to sculpt them? I use super sculpy. I heard of a good method to making hands here on the board somewhere: make the palm first, then stick thin pieces of wire wrapped in masking tape into the palm where you'd like the fingers to be. The masking tape gives the sculpy something to grip onto. I do't have any tips for casting, sorry.
Yeah that's what I was thinking of doing. Thank you for your help. I wasn't sure if i should use epoxy putty or super sculpy though...
I would use Apoxie. Sculpey is so brittle and when sanded it tends to show a lot of fleas under the surface. Sculpt the palm, then let it cure and drill holes for wires in it. Cut wires to length and wrap in tape (or tip in glue, the sawdust or something like that) to give the putty some grip. Sculpt one finger at a time, and let cure. Sand and reshape as needed, then glue into holes drilled in palm. Fill gaps between fingers and palm with more putty and smooth/sand till satisfied. Edit: fairy@changelingchildren's thread about Apoxie has loads of good tips for working with said material.
http://www2d.biglobe.ne.jp/~dhnoah/make_03.htm The Noah's Dolls tutorial is really good for hands. You can see some pictures here of what you're doing, and if you're working in anything other than sculpey, the materials here are the way to go for the base too.
