Ok so I'm using alumilite resin and silicone. I've attempted to cast and just drill the pieces hollow but I fear my dremel will die before one doll is even done. How can I make these hollow without using extra silicone when the resin heats up to high temps when curing. Any suggestions would be of great help.
You could try incorporating drinking straws in your molds, to form stringing channels... tutorial with pics: http://www.vivcore.com/dolly_daydream.html (Click 'casting' in right-hand menu)
When I casted a tiny, I used the red 'straws' that come with with these: (they're the little air cans you use to clean keyboards/computers) You can cut little grooves to place them in when you pour your resin (Would be best to have casted them instead inside with the piece) I hope this makes sense!! *just woke up*
You can go down to the local hobby store that specializes in plastic models, they will have a Plastruct display with plastic tubing of all sizes. You can find it online too: http://www.plastruct.com/ The Plastruct site isn't as easy to navigate as this hobby retailer: http://www.hobbymasters.com/plastructroundtubing.aspx
Thank you everyone! Everything seems very helpful. I may try the straw method first and if it doesn't work then onto plastruct! Which i would probably have to order considering we lack decent specialized hobby stores.
Don't forget to use mold release on the straws/plastruct so you'll be able to take them out again. Just test to make sure the mold release doesn't melt the plastic, as I noticed it did a number on the christmas ornaments I am using for hip balls.
Why bother? Why take the straws out at all? It seems more expensive to buy air dusters for the straws when the plastruct is so much cheaper. It's hard to believe there isn't one single model, train or hobby shop in your area that might have these. Let's see...a quick look in your area shows these potential suppliers: Power R/C Hobbies 903 S Main St Bryan, TX 77803 (979) 779-2151 American Aerospace Modelport 6113 E State Highway 21 Bryan, TX 77808 (979) 778-9464 Craftmasters' Mall 202B W 26th St Bryan, TX 77803 (979) 776-0870
I think coffee stirrers are also small straws that would be more cost effective than straws from aerosol cans. I would want to remove the straws if they weren't hollow, or since the channels are already going to be small, without the straws they would be slightly larger meaning you are able to use a stronger/thicker elastic to string the doll, But it depends on just how tiny this tiny is.
jco415: If the straws work it'd save me some money seeing as how this is just a casting experiment really. Also because I already have said straws because my parents are heavy coffee drinkers. Oh and thank you! I didn't actually know about those places simply because I don't actually live in Bryan. I actually live in the country side surround it so I don't go about the town much. Never actually stopped to think outside of Hobby lobby or Micheal's. Twigling: I'll have to experiment with the straws and mold release I suppose. I should hope that it won't melt though hopefully if all goes well I'll be able to put pictures up. Aneemal: thanks for the site! Legos! would have been so much easier than those darn mold boxes. Ah well.
What about hollow resin casting (Rotating the mould while pouring the resin- about 1/4 of the normal quantity.)
