Skip to 2:25 . Who is that doll with the yellow eyes and orange hair in a ponytail? I don't recognize her. I can recognize the model for all of the other dolls, but not her. Not me btw.
You are absolutely right. Thanks! Just my luck that she is out of print. Danny Choo tries to prevent people from buying/selling dolls second-hand too. Lovely. Guess I will never own her.
Here is a quote from the page that "Gallye" linked to. Warning to re-sellers If you have a look on auction sites you will find very little Smart Doll products when compared to other brands. The reason is that we have measures to deter re-sellers from making profits from fans. All Smart Dolls come with serial numbers. The warranty is only valid if the owner provides the name/address/phone number of the person who bought the product meaning that the reseller will have to disclose these details to the owner - meaning that replacement parts will be sent to the original buyers address. We also have algorithms that aim to detect reseller activity - such orders are cancelled. There are very few Smart Doll things on Yahoo Japan, so it seems that it is working over there. Ebay is loaded with smart doll stuff though. She's beautiful and I want her .
Requiring people to keep passing along the name/address/phone of the first purchaser along to each successive buyer to keep the warranty valid seems really... inappropriate. I guess it works to get people to not want to sell their doll and risk an unending chain of their privacy being violated but still... it seems pretty wierd and control-freaky for a company to do that.
The measures above are mostly to dissuade scalpers (there was a horrible incident not too long ago where a scalper managed to purchase every single one of a limited Volks release, for example), and not really aimed at the average collector who just wants to pass on a doll. Sure, it does infringe on the ease of collector to collector sales a little bit, but his intention is to protect people from profit seekers buying his dolls for the sole purpose of selling them at insane markups. And almost no doll companies will honor a warranty on your second hand doll anyway, so that's nothing new. Might even be a bonus for collector to collector sales that the warranty is somewhat transferable.
Smart Dolls do turn up on Mandarake from time to time, too, but usually just the basic ones, and it's true that they don't turn up in huge amounts.
There's a group on facebook called Smart Doll Lovers and second-hand dolls pop up there frequently. My Felecity sculpt was second-hand and i've had no issues.
Something I've wondered about the smart doll warranty, if the owner moves, how do they get the address in his system updated? It seems like a common situation. I'm not sure how he can really enforce this.
