Hello everyone. After many years of longing, I managed to get my grail doll earlier this year! I thought I had her all planned out, I was going for a look inspired by my great grandmother's china, etc... And then when I was nearly done with the head, it hit me that the reason Anson's arm petals are so different than the head petals is that they're not petals! They're shaped like leaves growing out of a stalk! So now I must make a decision... Go with my original vision and have everything match, or paint her arms completely differently and make her look even more like the living plant she is. To make it harder, I haven't seen anyone paint the arms and head in completely different styles, which gives me less of an idea how it'll turn out. Here's her almost finished faceup, it's more pink and less red in person: My friend suggested trying to emulate a Darlingtonia on her arms, which I fell in love with... They're very hard to paint though. Here's my best attempt at a Darlingtonia mockup, the center yellow looks more like a very light green in person: I also did a mockup of a "generic" leaf look: What do you think? If you think I should go with the leaf look, I'd love suggestions for specific plants to emulate. (And if anyone has suggestions for making the darlingtonia mockup look more like a darlingtonia, that would also be nice.)
I personally would pull the pink down at least a little into the arms for some coherency. Maybe a soft gradient from the shoulder fading away near the elbow?
I love the Darlingtonia idea! Perhaps you’re finding it difficult because you’re thinking of the markings the wrong way, they’re not like a leaf, they look more like veins. There isn’t really a central ‘stalk’ present. @Nyake is correct, pulling the pink/red colouration down will help. Have the pink drift down and gradually become like reddish veins and dots on the green background. Maybe outline the arm leaves with a band of a deep red shade too. Some carnivorous plants such as pitcher plants have a kind of thick ribbed rim around the trap openings, helps give the decoration a neater finish too.
I agree with the ideas above me Funnily enough I also thought of some kind of gradient with pink + green as a solution to this, I just wasn't sure how to articulate it as well as @Blodeuwedd did ^^.
Agree with all the ideas above me too hah.. but the generic leaves could be painted like coleus as it's pretty pink and green as well
My thought with the dark green and pink veins was swiss chard! but I'm not sure how well that would work with the beautiful faceup you've already done
Thanks everyone! One thing's for sure -- I'll definitely have to make more mockups. I appreciate all your suggestions, I want to try lots of ideas so I can have a great final doll! @Blodeuwedd Thanks for your detailed suggestions on how to improve my darlingtonia drawing. There's a crease in the middle of the darlingtonia leaf and Anson's arms, I think trying to work that into my mockup threw it off. Along with trying to simplify the beautiful fractal pattern. @Rosenfinch Thanks for the specific plant suggestion, I'll definitely try that one. A friend of mine also suggested croton, but I think your idea might be easier to work a gradient into. @lavenderbear Actually, as soon as I read @Nyake 's suggestion, I thought "rhubarb"!
I like the "generic leaf" option, I think it would make the head instantly read as "flower". But there are some great points made about leafs that does have some pink in them, it would tie things together nicely.
