Shopping Help Finding Similar Wig + Dress

Jun 4, 2022

    1. Hello everyone! I hope I’m using this part of the forum correctly. I wasn’t sure if it should go here or in the “shelling” section (also if someone could tell me shelling means I would be forever grateful, haha ^^)

I am in love with Maskcat Astrid. I have been staring at her for weeks! I just started her layaway a few days ago. Sadly, she doesn’t come with her lovely outfit and wig as seen in the stock photos, which is understandable! I believe the full sets were extremely limited.

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find something similar to these items? I’m trying to keep close to the Renaissance/Victorian old-fashioned look. Especially interested in having a velvet-y dress, as well as her hair to be curly.

Stock photos can be seen here: Astrid, 57cm Maskcat Girl - BJD, BJD Doll, Ball Jointed Dolls - Alice's Collections

    2. The owner at Maskcat is super nice. You might send a message asking if a similar wig could be available.
I've gotten her outfits with my Maskcat girls & they've all been beautifully finished. The outfits are what pushed me over the edge when deciding to order. I haven't seen anything similar fs. Good luck!

    3. This wig looks similar: Wigs for BJD Dolls - BJD, BJD Doll, Ball Jointed Dolls, BJD Accessories - Alice's Collections

As for the outfit I am sure you can find someone to commission when you get access to the marketplace. Or why not try to make it yourself when you get your doll. Part of the fun in this hobby is making things for your dolls. And in the process, learning new skills.

Since you have your doll on layaway you have lots of time to figure out exactly what you want for her. Look for pictures, paint or make drawings of how you magine her clothes and hair to be. Write down a few words to describe her style, or even write a little story or poem if that is your thing. Go to your local fabric store and collect some fabric samples. Make an inspiration board.

    4. Thank you for this reply! It’s very helpful hearing from someone who has experience ^_^ it’s great to hear the outfits are just as amazing in person.

I will definitely reach out to the owner. My Maskcat was ordered through Alice’s Collections so it’ll be my first time dealing with them directly! I also might buy some extra hands and feet because they’re gorgeous <3

    5. Ooh, thank you, that wig is very close! I will definitely add it to my Alice’s Collections cart ^_^ thank you for sharing.

And thank you for the ideas and advice! This gives me a lot of inspiration. I’ve always wanted to learn how to sew but never have time. Maybe should look into purchasing a sewing machine as well. Maybe eventually commission if I suck at it haha. The inspiration board is a very good idea! I forgot all about Pinterest honestly

    6. I have the pleasure of owning the Yaël fullset (the one with the black dress and gold embroidery and earrings) and the clothes are definitely amazing. I would love it if Maskcat sell more clothing.^^

The wig on the Astrid seem a bit peculiar (with red beads decorating the hair) so I don't know if it is produced anymore but it never hurts to ask.

But if it is not available anymore, buying a similar one and adding a bun and ropes of dark red beads could work.

I fell in love with Astrid stock photos too. ^^ I don't think the dress would be very hard to replicate (though sewing velvet could be tricky as it is slippery) but the pattern of it would, IMO, not be too hard to do once you have your doll body.

It's basically a high neck bodice, a long skirt and bishop sleeves, then embellished with lace and beads. You can either hunt SD-13 patterns on the Internet and put it together or draft the pattern once you get your doll.( For tight-fitting bodices, I do this by putting layers of plastic wrap around the doll, then layers of paper tapes, then I draw where I want sewing lines, then I carefully cut out on the lines and trace it on cardboard. Example: (200) DIY Barbie Doll Pattern / How To Make Barbie Doll Basic Pattern / DIY BJD Doll Basic Pattern - YouTube . There are other ways to do this, but it is the most intuitive one to me. For the sleeves, I play around with some paper until it kind of fits. And for the skirt, a circle skirt (or double circle skirt) would be easy to sew (it seems like the skirt pannels follow the lines of the bodice, so it is not a circle skirt), simply attached to the bodice.

Shelling is (for me) putting your character idea in doll form. Basically, I have characters from a story I am writing and I am shelling their characters with BJDs, making them the clothes they would wear, etc.

    7. (Late response, my apologies~)

You're sooo lucky! Yaël is absolutely stunning :love Her jewelry is to die for! Congrats on snagging her ^_^ I would love if Maskcat made it a regular thing to sell clothes <3 I just fall in love with their stock photos every time!

Thank you so so much for your very detailed and very helpful response! I will definitely message Maskcat to see if they would be willing to sell a similar wig/clothing, but will focus more so on making my own clothing. I definitely adore the sort of refined, Victorian, Gothic look her dress has. It's just so gorgeous. Thank you for the tips on sewing clothing and letting me know velvet is slippery. I would have honestly not known otherwise :XD:

And thank you for letting me know what shelling is~ I'm still new to this hobby so it helps  Have a wonderful day!

    8. Thanks! I love my Yaël, she's my favorite.:D Some clothes are sold on the Dolly Planet, at least those that are made by an independent artist.

I think Maskcat style of clothing is fairly simple, but done well, with a few embellishments. It's not a seven-parts bodice, like you can sometimes see.^^ So if you like it, it's IMO good to train to sew basics and add a few decorations.

There are definitely tips and tricks to sew with velvet and velveteen on the net (how to pin it, a temporary glue to make it less slippery, etc.) but I think it would be best to make a good cotton or muslin dress first, to nail the shape of it, so you can get a good pattern, and then try it with velveteen. I often use my mockups as lining, or as seperate dresses (a bit like the white dress that Yaël wears on the stock photos, the one under the black embroidered one), so my preliminary work isn't lost. XD
