Repair Help! Broken finger off from hand, and someone else tried to fix it;;;

Jan 12, 2021

    1. Hello!!

      I need help and advice ; <;

      I moved out and had left my BJDs behind as I traveled the world, but upon checking back in and returning home to weather the pandemic, I discovered that my Souldoll Limited Edition - The Tarot - The Fool - Lev...had fallen over. He fortunately didn't sustain too much damage from his trip to the hardwood floor, but his ring finger (might be middle finger) broke off and my mom, fearing that I would be upset, tried to fix it herself (bless her heart). Unfortunately, she fixed it with super glue;;; and the finger slowly slid askew as the glue set;;;;;;;;

      I'll put up pictures in the morning, but I thought I would get the ball rolling. I would love some assistance in figuring out just how I should go forward with this discovery. It's been a long time since I've peeked my head back into Den of Angels, so forgive me if I did something wrong, I'm trying to learn after all these new and exciting changes!!

      Thank you so much!!

    2. Dunking the hand in a cup of boiled water will cause the superglue to fail, then you can sand the excess off and try again!

    3. superglue also fails if it's cooled so you could put the hand into the freezer for a bit as well. Then once the finger drops off you can clean the glue off it and reglue it, holding it in place as it sets so it won't slip.

    4. I've removed superglue residue on dolls with just rubbing alcohol, so if boiling (which should work) or freezing (which has literally never worked for me) don't do anything you might try that.

    5. I’ve removed superglue with acetone before though I would try the other suggestions first.

    6. That is useful info, I wasn’t aware of that product.
      Also, somewhat hilarious (though it probably wasn’t at the time)

    7. She was fine about it... though I always suspected that she walked down the aisle with her train buttoned on back-to-front just to get back at me.

    8. AAAA Thank you all so much for the help and advice!! Will boiling the hand have any affect on the resin or it's coloration?

      I have some pictures here now to show you all what I mean, in case there is any other perspectives about fixing this. TT<TT It was somehow worse than I remembered. The glue got everywhere on the inside of the hand. And I've just noticed that my cat has picked at his clothes >8'C I'm going to have to move him to a safer place after all this.

    9. Oh man, okay, I am going to try and do this technique tonight!! Q<Q

      Is there a certain temperature to reach or perhaps a certain amount of time the hand should stay in there?

    10. If you haven't already tried it --
      As long as you don't leave the hand in the water for long (just dip and remove, repeat if necessary, and as long as the water is close to boiling it doesn't actually have to be at a full boil), it will be fine. Let it cool before you put it back on or do anything to it after getting the finger off...boiling is also a method of repositioning fingers...it's not super-easy, and you need to leave the fingers in the heat for longer to get them to move (I've done it few times) but it's good to be aware that it can happen. But if you don't apply any pressure, and just dip to get the glue tacky and off, you should be fine.

      I've had to remove magnets I've glued in backwards many times...I go right to boiling because it's pretty easy and I've never seen any damage. Good luck!

      If you did try it last night, I hope it worked!

    11. I haven't tried yet!! I got nervous and decided to wait for more help since this is such a delicate process and I'm scared of further damaging a LE doll. @<@ hgngngnnnggg BUT This extra help and reassurance is definitely welcomed!! I will keep updating as I go along on this journey. QwQ7

    12. OKAY Update!! I was able to get the excess glue off of the palms and surrounding fingers, but I haven't yet succeeded in getting the finger to detach. It looks better, even if the finger is still slightly askew, and I soon discovered the flexing of the fingers when I left it dipped for slightly too long. I tried the freezing technique too, but so far no luck. The struggle continues.
