Hello :)

Jan 19, 2025

    1. Hello!! My name is Sophia.
So a bit of background about me and dolls. I don't own any, but every year or so since the pandemic the desire to get one washes over me and I spend a week or two thinking about nothing else.
It started with Blythe dolls. Those things had me gripped by the throat a few years ago. That was a proper hyperfixation, I was completely obsessed with the idea of owning them and doing faceups and whatnot. They were my first introduction to BJDs, and although I have 0 interest in them now, the customizing aspect has still stuck with me. I'm really drawn by the artistry side of dolls more than anything else.
The reason why now after all these years of having a passive interest I'm really starting to get into it is because I have enough money to actually get a doll. I have an idea in my head for a girl that's kind of scene and kind of pastel goth mixed together, so maybe in the coming months I will bring her to life :)

    2. Hello and welcome to the hobby! Have you picked out a sculpt for your girl or are you still shopping around?

    3. Welcome to the hobby! One of the great things about BJDs is how customizable they are.

    4. Right now I'm only leaning towards a specific body, the Huajing 1/4 girl body version 4. It's much cheaper than the other ones I have looked at and many people online are saying it's a good beginner's doll. But I still may change my mind, because none of their head sculpts are really speaking to me and I would hate to spend upwards of $100 on a doll body just for it not to fit the head. I love the Dollfie Dream heads and the super stylized faceups I've seen used for them with the huge eyeliner, but the bodies are simply too far out of my price range and I'm scared they'll be a bit more oversized on a 1/4 doll body, which is what I plan to get. It's only been a week or so since I started to get back into it, so I have a lot of learning to do.

    5. @meowback2cats You are correct to be worried because that won't work at all. My advice is to fall in love with a doll, do plenty of research, save up for it, and then buy without worrying about the price! If you have any difficult questions, someone here will almost definitely do their best to help answer it.

    6. Thank you :)

    7. Welcome to the hobby! The endless customization of BJDs is so much fun and has such limitless possibilities; it's really an amazing hobby for creative folks.

I +1 the advice to find a doll you really fall in love with. I'm also someone with hyperfixations, and would say that it took a solid year of constant obsession for me to get my first doll. The benefit was that I did a ton of research (at least, whatever was available back in 2005/2006 lol) which helped once I committed to buying my own dolls. Another piece of advice if you have the chance is to attend a local meetup and see the dolls in person. It may help you narrow down what you like or don't like

    8. Hello and welcome! It's definitely more freeing when you start to have money for the expensive art piece dolls! Can't wait to see how you bring your girly to life!

    9. If you really love the 1/4 scale and dollfie dream I recommend the mdd/ddp/mochi bodies. That was my first bjd (ddp). You should join the doll groups on Facebook until you can get marketplace access here. They have been plenty bodies ranging in prices due to minor staining etc. I haven’t seen $100 but you will be happy for what you paid for. When I brought my dollfie dream body (ddp) for my floating head it costed me roughly $300 but I brought it off yahoo! Japan when they first came out several years ago when the US store wouldn’t sell directly to us. Also many sellers are willing to do a short layaway and work with you so you can get the dollie of your dreams. Happy hunting.
