Hiya! I have a couple of dolls I got from Soom and Fairyland awhile back. I originally bought these BJDs with the intention of getting into face ups and stuff, but I was too afraid to actually do anything with them. I was too worried I’d mess them up for how expensive they were so they sat around in boxes until I rediscovered them the other day. Since then, I got into painting other toys and miniatures, so now I feel confident enough to finally tackle these guys. Thought it was time to join DOA to check out some resources on where to get started.
Over in the workshop section there's a lot of helpful tips for faceups, and there are WIP threads for posting new faceups and getting critique if you are looking for that. I think the most important thing for bjd faceups though is that resin will stain from oil-based paints or pastels and the oils in hairspray can damage it if you use it for sealant. I know a lot of people in hobby spaces use hairspray because it's often easier to get a hold of, but it's not a good thing to use for resin.
I hope you’ll share your results when you do the faceups! It’s always great to see new artists creations in the hobby!
