I had a doll back in 2006 but never joined anything but put him away until around November, now I have over 20 dolls because I got a little too excited but I’m looking to make friends this time! Turns out dolls is the perfect intersection of sculpting, painting and sewing! I hope we all get along!
Nice to have you here! What was that first doll? Isn't it cool how this hobby moves? You can be all in one moment, be inactive for years and then one day come back to it and the dolls are just right there waiting for you. I often call the BJD hobby an "umbrella hobby" because you can fit so much in underneath it. I'm a compulsive crafter myself, so I got in via doll making and dolls in general.
It was an impldoll Charles! Then just this last winter i got an angel street Zazean and fell down into a doll buying spiral lol. I love the idea of it being an umbrella hobby! That’s such an accurate term, I’m having so much fun customizing them now that I have a bunch, do you have a favorite brand? Mine is slowly becoming gem of doll despite not having any from them
Charles has such a lovely and expressive face. A great choice for a first doll. Have the dolls from your buying spree all come home yet or are you still waiting? Twenty at once does sound like it could be overwhelming, but it sounds like a lot of fun too! I try to spread my collection between as many companies as possible to get a varied group of dolls, but I do have a few that stands out. Lati was the first I fell in love with and my very first BJD, a lati blue Shaina, is still my favourite. And I have secon Lati head, a Cara, as well. Other companies that stands out is Doll Leaves because of their great engineering despite the relatively low price and Maskcat, again for great enginering and very very lovely faces. I have two Iplehouse JID and their sculpting is wonderful, but their posing is limited and unreliable. I still love them, though. I can forgive a lot when I love the sculpt. I also have a Maracreatures Ramunder. He is a massive troll doll. His weight (around 4 kilos!) and unusual body shape and posture makes him very dificult to pose. He can't stand on his own and he keeps dropping his magnetic tail, but he is so absolutely unique and there is nothing else even remotly like him out there. It's one of those dolls that I always known I would buy, no matter the cost, right from when I saw the early sculpting stages. And he is my most expensive doll, but I think he is worth every bit of what he cost.
Oh wow a troll? That’s awesome! Cool sculpts are a big part of my favorite thing about the hobby, that they can be expressive and unfeminine or even monster shaped but still be loved. I feel like that and the respect for artists is my favorite things, and you just don’t see either of those things as often in other hobbies anymore that I have seen. I totally get needing a cool troll, lowkey I want one too now ahahah! I’m a big fan of doll leaves bodies if I’m honest, they’re usually good skin matches for the heads I get separate and are good quality for the price! I’ve seen some maskcat! I’m in love with their Lisette sculpt ;-; I saw her on the market but missed the opportunity to get her. I’m in love with the idea of hand sculpted one offs though so I’m working on practicing that and my face ups I think my best one so far is the one I made my profile pic, the si cang ah ha face sculpt. I was very intimidated to do a face up on him but I think it came out well! idk who my most expensive guy is tbh, I bought most of them second hand with documents (or proof some other way, one seller even sent me the screencaps of their doa purchase lol) so I know they are real but the money value is less to me than the affection value. Like my zazean is now Alister my posh vampire tank from dungeons and dragons so despite him being inexpensive comparatively I would hold onto him tighter than some of my other dolls.
Here is the discussion thread for him if you want to check him out. I think the fact that the manufacturing process for these dolls work well for small production runs makes it possible for small artists to compete on, if not equal then at least reasonably fair terms. This in turn means a lot of smaller artists and with that more diversity. That's a challenging face to do a face up for, for sure. You did a great job on him! I used to mainly look for neutral faces, but the longer I'm in the hobby, the more I find myself admire the more expressive sculpts. If you ever want to try your hand at sculpting your own doll, join us over in the doll making section of DoA.
Oh I’m definitely gonna check him out! I love unique looking sculpts! Thank you! I’m a harsh judge of my own work so I will never feel it’s up to par but I’m actually pretty proud of that one! and I’m actually finishing up hand sculpting a one off doll for myself! It’s a chaos god based on a dungeons and dragons podcast I listen to. I’m going to the live show they have soon so I’m speed sewing tiny suit separates lmaooo I’m very envious of people who’s sewing machines are not packed away!
yeah! It’s something I’m having a good time making it, it’s by no means well made but it is very unique looking ahahah I haven’t quite figured out the forums’ organization yet but once I find where to share the project I will! He’s a funky looking little guy ahahahah. I also have to find where to ask about wig stuff cause one of my dolls is on hold because undercut wigs are out of my wheelhouse lol.
Anything hand sculpted is off topic for the main forum, but you can share the sculpting process in the doll making forum or the finished project in Brigadoon; the off topic section of the forum. There are several threads about art dolls and off topic dolls where you can post a picture, or you could make your own thread about your project especcially if you want more discussion about it. The Styling & Crafting forum in the Workshop section is probably a good place to ask for advice about making and styling wigs.
you have no idea how helpful this is! Den of angels is lovely but a bit intimidating for a new person so being told what goes where is a godsend! I really don’t want to make mistakes ahahha! Ironic that with your name you are the angel I needed to direct me! seriously though I really appreciate the help! I’ve been hesitant to post anywhere because of not fully grasping what goes where and only got brave enough to post one of my dolls so far in the doll profiles part.
No worries, I'm happy to help. Yeah, I can see that DoA may be a bit much to take in all at once. But with the slow pace here and the fact that posts remain more or less forever, there is no rush. You can safely take your time to ease into things without the risk of missing anything much. The more you read, the more of a feel for what goes where you'll get. And should you get it wrong, worst that will happen is that a mod will move the thread to the apropriate forum. It's no big deal. And if starting your own threads seems intimidating, you can always spend some time just replying to other peoples threads, to get your feet wet, so to speak. You will feel at home in no time.
