Hello! New to the Community and Hobby

Aug 10, 2025

    1. Hello, my name is Lia. I am new to BJD's and very recently ordered an Iple House mari. I'm beyond excited to get into this hobby, and I am anxiously waiting for my doll to be made and delivered. I'm also very interested in getting specifically victorian clothing for my doll. I don't know how to sew, nor am I interested in learning, so it might be a long wait of custom clothes! I hope to learn a lot here, and thank you for having me!

    2. Hello and welcome! I hope you receive your doll quickly and flawlessly. She'll look gorgeous in a beautiful dress. I'm not sure if you've browsed yet, but I found some dresses on Legenddoll and Alice's; they're both great dealers and have a nice collection of clothes, dolls, and accessories. I personally don't have any experience with custom clothes makers, but I'm certain there are people on DoA that do and can recommend someone.
Here are some dresses that have similarities with Victorian style, though I'm no expert.

    3. Hello and welcome to the DoA! And congratulations on purchasing your first doll.:dance

The thing with BJD clothing is that Victorian style clothing is very commonly incorporated but not actually called Victorian. Maybe about 20-30 years ago Victorian outfits would have been easily found in search engines on BJD websites and been purely Victorian or labelled as "Steampunk," but since it is stylistically a popular style, you can find pieces of Victorian inspired clothing in contemporary pieces. Like what the person above me had linked, you'll see it isn't exclusively Victorian but also a mishmash of Regency, Rococo, Victorian, Steampunk, Lolita, Vampire/Gothic, High Fantasy, and even Roaring 20s Flapper. Your best bet is to get pieces that you like from different sets or solo pieces that can work together as an authentic Victorian BJD outfit isn't going to be easily Googled on popular BJD sites.

If you haven't done so already, sign up for Iplehouse's mailing list if they have one for when they release outfits for your Mari's size. I see that she is the SID size so if you want an outfit that fits her exactly, look for pieces in SID size. If you have Marketplace access on DoA, check out there to try to find bits and pieces to make a whole Victorian outfit or even older Iplehouse SID sets as they did sell Victorian/Gothic/Rococo pieces long ago when Steampunk and Vampire/Gothic was more in style.

I'm not sure what size your Iplehouse Mari is in comparison to Volks, but here are some pieces that can create the look of Victorian inspired to give you an idea that what you are looking for is out there but not called "Victorian":

      • SD16 Sucre Royal - Victorian inspired full set outfit with hat.

    4. Oooh thank you so much for these recs!!!! Love the options from gemofdoll, which I haven't even seen yet.

I'm sorry if this is considered double-posting. Didn't know how to add your reply to my previous one (didn't see if there was a rule against this when I checked).

Omg thank you so much for this comprehensive list! I love the creativity, but yeah I ran into this problem when I first started looking at BJD. I wanted an authentic victorian outfit, particularly the high bustle style in the later period. I also feel like I screwed myself over by getting an SID doll xD They're slightly larger than most 1/3 scale dolls from other brands! Either way I LOOOOOOOVE a lot of these victorian-inspired clothing. Thank you again! I found some seamstresses to commission, and these will help put together a pinterest board for inspiration.

    5. Hi, welcome to DOA! I also love the Victorian era, but fortunately I also love to sew which makes life easier! I'm also waiting for my first doll. I hope you don't have to wait too long. It's agony haha.

    6. Welcome! It is great that you have a specific aesthetic you're working on, and some great leads from others. I for one will look forward to seeing what you do with your new doll, victorian is cool and I am hoping you get your wish for something you like, maybe even before your doll arrives.

    7. Welcome! Iplehouse's Mari is beautiful ☺️☺️. I'm glad people are still getting into the hobby and enjoying it.

As for Victorian clothing, sometimes on Etsy you can find clothes, SartoriaJ usually has some. Being such a specific style the thing is to keep looking and the moment you find a store, do not lose sight of it.

    8. Hi welcome ! On DoA you have tutorials to learn how to sew or craft a wig ;)
