Hello everybody, I'm Dofuuhua, I either go by that pseudonym or minimintychip. I first discovered doll customisation and OOAKs on youtube. Nicolle's dream and Dollightful in particular really inspired me, after binge watching their videos I tried my hand at giving monster high dolls face ups (with varying success lol). The main appeal of BJDs for me is definitely the customisation opportunities; being able to give a blank slate new faces, hair, and outfits definitely gets those gears turning in my head. That, combined with my experience in making miniatures makes for a really exciting project. Fantasy dolls and animal hybrids are definitely my favourite kinds of dolls; the resinsoul Yao with her cloven hooves for feet, or their smaller centaur dolls. My favourite fantasy doll has to be the doll chateau Snowborn though, their body sculpting is so elegant and I love the calm and their serene smile. Humanoid dolls are pretty great too, especially if they have a bit of artsy flare. So long as they don't have an extreme expression it's all good (I personally find them too inflexible). That being said, as of writing this I'm a typical broke uni student who's pretty stingy with their money so the chances of me getting a BJD are rather slim. I know there is something for everyone in this hobby, so maybe one day I'll find a doll that I absolutely ~must have~ and snatch them up, who knows. Until then, I'm going to focus on leaning how to sew and modding dolls, so when the time comes I'll have all the skills needed to make my vision a reality! Hopefully that wasn't too long and thank you for reading! I haven't been on this site for that long but I'm already learning a lot, so I hope you guys will continue to teach a newbie like myself.
Welcome to the forum! Don't worry too much about being a broke student, there are a lot of really affordable companies these days and most offer layaway so you can pay your doll off over time. Resinsoul is especially good if you're on a budget! What scale do you make your miniatures in? :O I'd love to see them!
Welcome! I’m U.K. based too - always nice to have new people join the community here. Fantasy dolls are great for customising too. If you can’t get a doll right now, there are always some heads you can buy separately (the cheapest legit are DFA practice heads available on Alice’s Collections website for $25) so you can still learn face ups and wig making!
Hello! Doll Chateau has such beautiful sculpts and Snowborn in particular is brilliant. It's so unique and subtle about what makes it interesting. I feel you on the broke uni student thing ... I'm also living the broke college life. I'm the kind of person who stresses over spending an extra seventy-five cents for the nice eggs but also finds it okay to drop however much on art. I'm sure you'll be able to get one eventually, though, and you'll have so much practise by then! What kinds of miniatures do you make?
Hi there! If you don't mind me asking, where about in the UK are you? I'm pretty down south. I've seen some of the practice heads on alice's collection and angelesque but I'm not entirely sure what makes them different to regular heads?
Hi! I've considered getting layaway of some sort but I'm honestly so impatient, currently I'm browsing on the second hand market and hoping for the best aha :') I've found a resinsoul winter on insta that i'm going back and forth on because i'm worried a centaur doll is too tricky for a newbie like myself As for my miniatures mostly do key ring/charm sized items? Like this and this if i hyperlinked that correctly it should redirect you to some of my twitter posts, fingers crossed
Doll chateau/doll zone has one of the most unique sculpts I've seen for sure, when I look at their brand I can totally understand why BJDs are the price that they are. I'm totally the same with my spending habits- always stingy on necessities but is willing to indulge I've linked some of my minatures on another reply but here is another example!
Welcome! I'm from the UK too! This community is really nice and I'm here if you ever want help or someone to talk to There's so much to do in this hobby, I hope you'll have fun here! You should make some miniatures for BJDs and hopefully you'll be able to find the doll of your dreams one day!
Heya! Thank you so much! I think making miniatures for dollies is such a great idea, I'm assuming the marketplace is a good place to advertise this kind of thing (once i have access to it)
I’m in the south east. I’m also a student but a lot older (I’m doing my Master’s degree + a full time job... it’s not fun!) As for the practice head, they’re just cheaper, not sure why they’re designated ‘practice heads’. Quite a few people have made them into full dolls. They’re not full 1/3 sized (slightly smaller), but I have a couple and they don’t seem bad quality or anything. Maybe someone more knowledgable can answer the question! There’s also certainly a market for miniatures and props for photos. Might be a good way to raise some cash!
Wow, that's so cute! I love the colours you picked so much. Your dolls will have the absolute cutest props.
Hi and welcome! I'm also a student in the UK too in terms of the broke part, I saved for 6 months to get my first doll his body so with patience it's definitely possible for us students to have bjds!
Oh man that certainly does sounds really stressful, but hopefully it'll be worth :') higher education be like that ey. But i agree with you on practice heads. It's just, you know that saying, "if it's too good to be true then it probably is", so its nice to get some clarification
