Hi there! Nice to meet you all! You can call me Sanar =3 I've been interested in BJDs for a while-ish now, but never had the time for them until recently. I ordered my first boy in 2021 (Dollmore 16" Fashion Chris), and I just received my second (Dollshe Fashion Neo) last month! I have another Dollshe boy on order that I'll hopefully have soon (ordered the same time as my Chris). I look forward to learning more about customization, particularly faceups! My Neo is blank so I'm going to try doing the faceup myself, but right now I'm busy trying to sand out his seamlines first. The process has taken weeks and I've only done half of him xP Something interesting about me is that love video games! I intend to base all my dolls on my favourite characters =3 Feel free to message me if you want to talk games or dolls!
Welcome to the DoA! I'm so glad that I'm not the only person that bases their characters off of video game characters! Mine are normally based from Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy VII. Most people create OCs, original characters, here. Which isn't a bad thing, neither are to be honest. It's just so nice to see someone who's doing the same thing that I do! I have my summon collection which I'm building up. I have Garuda [Supiadoll- Lina] and Ifrit [Soom- Heliot] that are WIP, work in progress. I'm going to place Leviathan [ Akeheilos 2.0 - Moonlit Wonder] on layaway when I get paid next week. As from FFVII I have Rufus Shinra and Reno who are minimees from DIM [Doll in Mind] back when they had the service of creating custom heads and then I have Tseng who is a Ringdoll- Zhou Yu. I also have Roxas and Axel from Kingdom Hearts II who are also minimees. So which characters are you going to create and from which video game(s)?
Ahh, I love FF games! My Chris is actually based off Alphinaud (although perhaps a more mature version of him) from FFXIV! My Neo is going to be based off Kazuma Kiryu from the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games. My other boy (when he finally arrives xP) will be Goro Majima from the same series =D
Nice! I love playing FFXIV. I'm on Zalera server, Crystal database. My happy butt needs to do the expacs for EW but I haven't gotten around to it because I can't really play much due to my left wrist being injured. It sucks, but at least I can play mobile games and type. Yay? That's cool you have a mature Alphinaud, is his name Chris? Or something else? I know it's the model of doll from dollmore that you mention is named Chris. Just wondering that's all. I've never played the Yakuza series so I'm clueless there! But awesome none the less because it's more video game characters into the BJD community!
No worries! Yes, I was referring to sculpt name to avoid confusion since I don't have my doll profiles set up yet. His name is Alphinaud (or, I call him Alphy x3) I would highly recommend the Yakuza games! Yakuza 0 is my favourite. The two characters I mentioned are mains in that game.
LOL! I have like 1 out of my 20 dolls with profiles here. OOPS Me and actually making their clothing, like their pants It's the main reason I don't have them posted on here. I have 16 in hand and I'm waiting for 3 [1 is a being dyed while the other 2 are the long wait of coming home] and I have 1 soon to be 2 on layaway. I also have 6 box openings that I need to post here too from the covid years. I just posted 2B but not her complete box opening. Better than never I guess? Hopefully throughout this week I'll be posting box openings.
I can understand the challenges of clothing dolls and wanting them looking their best. I'm still in the process of creating Alphy's clothing because I'm just kinda derping around learning to sew as I go. Sometimes stuff doesn't fit right, sometimes the finishing is really bad with threads looping everywhere and I want to redo it It probably doesn't help that I want to make the sage outfit and it's kinda complex... but I'm getting there!
I started sewing at 15 years old for cosplay. Then when I was in my 20s I took sewing classes. I consider myself a intermediate seamstress. There's always youtube or taking classes to learn how to sew. I was lucky and where I live at it's free. I understand with the dolls and not fitting right with their clothes. SIGH. I'm use to allowances for humans and I'm clueless how much give you allow for a doll because they don't have squishiness like a human does, they're resin after all. Trial and error. As for looping threads sounds like a threading or tension problem with your machine. I'd have to see pictures. Unless you're hand sewing. As for the sage outfit my mind is at a blank. There's the end game gear you get at level 89 and then there's the one the NPC gives you at 70. Then there's glam, so much glam gear. Either way, I wish you the best with sewing for Alphinaud. It takes practice!
Hello and welcome to DoA! I love FF! Alphinaud would be an amazing characxter to create in doll for. Learning to sew is daunting but so rewarding. I hope you share your progress!!
Here are some images! (I hope the links work ) ^ Heart hands! And here's a picture of my problem. Sorry if it's hard to see! When I'm doing edges I'm fine, but once I get to a corner the machine stutters and sews in one spot. Sometimes the fabric sinks into the machine and the thread just balls up. I'm not sure if it's just the smallness of what I'm sewing or if I'm doing something wrong.
I get that too with the small seam allowance were the sewing machine eats the fabric! But I've also noticed that the thicker the fabric the less likely that happens. As for sewing in one spot from my experience you'll have to pull on the fabric a little bit or lift the needle and move the fabric just a tad, if you can. But you said that this was in the corners, I take it you are pivoting to sew the next seam to sew. If it's a lot of trouble then sew straight down and end at the corner and start again with that corner to start a new finish? I wish I could be more helpful but those are the only techniques that come to mind. Oh yeah, if that's a brocade fabric you might want to invest in fray check so the fabric doesn't fray later on. Other than that he looks great! Love the heart hands!
Hi, he's beautiful, and I think his outfit looks amazing! I just joined DoA, and I've just started sewing in miniature as well. This has also happened to me. With a 1/8" seam allowance, the feed dogs on the machine don't have enough surface to pull the fabric through properly, so when you get to the corner, and the seam gets slightly thicker, the fabric gets stuck. One thing I do sometimes, when I get to thicker seams, is sink my needle, lift the presser foot to make sure everything's laying the way it should, lower the foot, crank the wheel by hand forward (and reverse if I need to) to get to the turn, then do my pivot that way. I only run my machine on 1/2 speed, and only do a few stitches at a time sometimes, to make sure I have the best control. I really don't like sewing by hand, so I'd rather slowly crank my machine's wheel if I get to a tricky bit, and save my hand needles for embellishments and closures. I'm sure I'll get better at it over time, but now I'm using tons of pins to try making hems without raw edges because that's what makes me happy (that's just my own perfectionism issue, not a judgement). I've never used a Fray Check/Block/etc, but several of the patterns I've seen on Etsy call for them. So far, I haven't needed it, but I think I'm going to get some because I'm sure at some point I will need to use it. Certain fabrics are just notoriously difficult to work with (brocade is one of them - it frays horribly!) As for your outfit, I wouldn't have noticed it from the front. But, of course, as the artist, you're going to see every little flaw in every little detail just because you know where it is. That's what I do. I don't know if what I've said will help you or not, but it's just a suggestion. Thanks for reading! (This is my first post on DoA!)
Thank you for your comments, and welcome! I totally get the desire for perfection. I tend to have an overly critical mind towards my own work as well As you say with hems, there's a real sense of accomplishment and joy once you make that perfectly straight stitching or clean edge (in my case, after a number of disappointing fails and wasted thread/fabric ). It feels so good to see that improvement! And with this hobby in particular, there are so many skills you get to develop as you customize your dolls!
Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, I haven't bought any new fabric for my doll clothes yet. I don't have a character planned for her, or anything like that, so I don't even have a specific look in mind. I'm just practicing with remnants leftover from things I've made for myself - calico prints, t-shirt type knits, flannel, and stuff like that. Nothing complicated so far. My girl got her first pair of shoes in the mail yesterday, and I have a pattern for socks but I haven't made any yet. My pattern just has a single seam along the bottom and up the back, and suggests using a t-shirt weight knit, but I'm pretty sure that's going to be too thick to fit inside these shoes. Did you make his socks? What might be better to use? Would I be able to cut a pair of stockings out of an old pair of my tights, for example? Or would they just unravel? Any ideas? Thanks!
The 'socks' are actually a sleeveless full bodysuit underneath I initially made to protect from staining xP I'm not sure if it's necessary or not, but I figured it's better safe than sorry. I made it from a stretchy material used in athletic wear. It is a bit thick (helps to hide his pokey nipples ). I'm sure tights could work too! I've seen all kinds of fancy lace stockings on the Dollmore website that look quite delicate.
I've seen socks online, but I want to make my own. Then I can cut an ankle, knee, and thigh height of each fabric and make all three. A girl's got to have options! I've seen the body suits too, but I never really considered getting one because I'm not that worried about preserving her. Then again, she doesn't have body blushing or anything like that which would need protecting! I think I'm going to spend some serious time going through the patterns and stuff in the Workshop area of the forum. I'm sure I can find solutions, and if not, I'll just start experimenting! It'll be fun either way! Thanks!
Yes! More options is always a good thing I'll need to start working on an outfit for my new boy soon... Or at least some undies so he's less nakie
Hello Sanar and welcome to DOA! It's always great to see another gamer on the forums! Though most of my bjd are OCs (and most are in storage) I have Terra Branford (Resinsoul Mei) and Setzer Gabbiani (Dollzone Mo) from FFVI, and my Jaeda (Unoa Sist/Minifee hybrid) is currently cosplaying Yuffie Kisaragi from FFVII! There's lots of cosplayers here, and folks who have game characters as bjd, so I hope you'll have a fun time checking out all the cool pictures. ^.^
Thank you! Yesh! I've already been looking through the Final Fantasy character gallery =D So many pretties~
Haha! I tried to make a pair of panties and they were awful! I swear, whenever I try to put those panties on her she curls up into a ball and starts kicking me on purpose. And I can't say that I blame her. I wouldn't want to wear them either!
Oh dear I remember the first panties I made I forgot to add more fabric to the back and it ended up looking, uh, uncomfortable to say the least, ehe.
Yikes! That's no good. I should have at least made them in pink. She seems to behave much better if she's wearing pink. I have no idea why. She definitely doesn't get this color preference from me. Right now, her dress is red, and I just KNOW she doesn't like it. Isn't that weird?
